Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/11/19

Thanks to all of you for your comments on the manatees :)

Judy, thanks for the information on Kellys streaming. When I downladed Purple Player, I started getting odd follower requests. I went back and put a picture of Gertie on my profile. I couldnt set privacy without having the paid upgrade which I am not willing to do. I will have to check it out. I have been following her workouts andvshe is coming up with quite a lot that sound good.

Deb, I check the mets and calorie burns on Cathes workout manager when I put my workouts in the calendar. I then adjust the met to where my calories are to aee what met value I have. .

Lori, I think they are better at looking at the good cholestrol numbers instead of over all like they used to. I see Deb has posted some information for you about differences for diabetics. I wish my doctors labs still sent out a full report like they used to do. My daughter does not like the labs that they use now.

Lori, I don't think 221 is bad for total, but I know it shows out of range. Your HDL is really good, but your doctor may still want to prescribe something because of the diabetes ranges. I agree with Deb about the statins, but you have to work with your doctor and decide what's best for you. One thing that I did was to get a cardiovascular screening, where they check for atherosclerosis and blockages. Chris and I go every year for that. The fact that I haven't had anything show up in the screenings helped me decide not to take a statin.

Last March my numbers were:
229 total
73 HDL
147 LDL

In September they were:
201 total
80 HDL
111 LDL

After the March test, my doctor tried to prescribe a statin, but I decided against it. I decreased the saturated fat in my diet and added more fiber. Also, I started taking policosanol. I have no idea if it helped, but it didn't hurt.

Deb-I like DropBox. We started using it when we needed a way to easily share large video files with family members. Chris had some old home movies transferred to video and it was easy to upload the files to dropbox and then email links to people. Now I use it to back up files and photos. Dropbox doesn't have an automatic backup. It syncs files that are stored on a dropbox folder on your computer or you can manually upload files, which is what I usually do. Carbonite is probably a better system for you if you want the automatic backup.

Today's workout was Kelly Coffey Strength and Stamina workout #1, 40 minutes, 221 calories, heart rate average 114, max 155, met 5, 996 steps. I then did Kelly's Build and Burn Upper Body Super sets, 30 minutes, 864 steps, heart rate average 108, max 145, 149 calories, met 4.5. I finished off with Sarah Beth You Tube yoga Saturday Yoga strong and balanced power yoga, 16 minutes, 41 calories. This was more active and lots of balance. I really liked the balance work. Total time was 86 minutes. I checked out the internet www on my bluray player and was able to get on Cathe's site and book mark it. It works just like the computer so I am sure I can just log on for Cathe live. I found Vimeo, but would need to set that up. Also got on Kelly's website :) I guess I just need to check out more stuff on it. I never had a desire to check out the 3D though.
My Fitness Pal was acting weird this morning. I put in my workout and it kept coming back to the home page and listing me as working a 116 minutes and burning over 500 calories. I just deleted it. I tried deleting and syncing and it did not help. Weird!

Judy, nice work getting your cholesterol stats in check. I will do just about anything to avoid taking medications.

Today I did KCM’s Strength and Stamina for 40 minutes and 211 calories burned. Average heart rate was 121 and maximum heart rate 150. High Reps was scheduled on the rotation but I wanted to try Strength and Stamina. I really liked it and it felt like a thorough workout. Diane Sue, I wanted to add on the Build and Burn that you mentioned, but I changed my mind. I was more tired than I had anticipated when I finished the first workout. I am loosely following the February rotation but this is a high impact week and I am substituting some workouts.

All of the discussion about cholesterol levels made me take another look at my last lab report. Everything is within normal range, but I didn’t remember the break down.

Lori, yes you should talk with your doctor in more detail about the lab results. I did the full Intensity workout a couple of times when I first got it, but I usually do the step and low HiiT. It is a tough workout.

Deb, I don’t know about the Live version, but Cardio Core Circuit is another hard workout. I’m not surprised that you gave it a low rating in your notes. It’s on schedule for tomorrow but I’m not sure if I will do it or something else.

Diane Sue, great workouts today. It’s good that you discovered how to get the streaming with your Blu-ray player.

Judy, congratulations on getting your cholesterol numbers down. It’s good that you waited to start medication and you were able to lower it in other ways.

Valerie, I found out about the changes with maple syrup grades last year when I was looking for grade b. Apparently the grades were confusing to people so they went to a descriptive system and eliminated the grades b,c, etc. Mine is labeled as “Grade A Dark Color Robust Taste”. In smaller type it says formerly grade b.

Have a wonderful afternoon everyone.

Carolyn, thanks on the maple syrup. I will have to check next time. I have noticed some color differences as well as price. When I finished Strength and Stamina I kept it out thinking that I would do the bonus step when I was done with Build and Burn. I decided I had worked enough by the time that I was done and just added the yoga for more of a stretch.

Big Pharma would like nothing better than to have everyone on the planet taking daily medication for whatever reasons they can think of. they have sold the idea that almost everyone needs to be on lipid lowering drugs and on blood pressure medication. acceptable BP limits have been lowered recently too, so more people need medication. Drugs you take daily for life are a hugely profitable over the long run, compared to a short course of antibiotics or something.

so yes, drug companies mainly want to make money. there are people who have truly bad numbers. they benefit from meds. most people with decent numbers can adjust their diets a little and do fine and not worry about drug side effects. it's also a lot easier to write a rx for a statin, than it is to counsel people on how to improve their diets. plus, a lot of people who eat badly and don't exercise don't want to change if they can just take a pill instead.
my chol was 195 , HDL 76, LDL 105 and triglyceride 72. these are good numbers.

HDL is a beneficial, a good thing. Lori, Deb and Judy are right, it's good to have a high HDL high. if your HDL is high, the total cholesterol also will be a little higher because "total cholesterol " is a measurement of all different forms of cholesterol. LDL is better low. they calculate a ratio by dividing the LDL by the HDL.
My DH would KILL for any of our values! He always groans when he sees my numbers, and we eat mostly the same things. he is struggling with taking a very low dose of a statin but keeps having issues with side effects. a lot of people have trouble taking statins, though big pharma wont' admit this readily. I would do a lot of diet manipulations to avoid taking a statin.

we did a walk/hike this morning for a few miles and 1.5 hours. lots of up and down. it was pleasant and not crowded. at a local state park.

Good evening ladies,

This morning I did a LEKfit Bounce then FS Push. Tonight I did a couple of Bellicon health bounces. I do not have my iphone near me so can’t look up the details on my workouts. It is across the room but I am too lazy to get up and grab it to post. Lol! I find this funny.

Thanks for all the information on Cholesterol. You all are a wealth of information! I love this. I need to look into this further. You are right Deb...because I have diabetes my standards are different as you mentioned. I would perfer not to have to take medication but it is slowly increasing instead of decreasing.

Deb...when you have to constantly modify then I can see why you would rate it low. I will look that workout up. I can’t remember it.

Diane Sue...I love the system my doctor uses. I sign into the system and get all my test results. I can email my doctor and request a prescription all using the app. So convenient.

Judy...that is a great idea on the cardiovascular test. This makes complete sense. I am going to certainly look into this. I needed to look up what policosanol was. Had no clue. Looks interesting. Going to look into this. Thanks for mentioning.

Caroyln...glad you are in normal range. My husband is too. Is Strength and Stamina from her new set?

Valerie...I totally get what you are saying and I plan to have a conversation with my doctor. If I seriously look into my diet I really think I can reduce the numbers. I eat well due to my diabetes but obviously I can have better choices for my cholesterol. Crazy how you can eat the same as your husband but his body just processes things differently.

Have a great night all!

Good morning,

Yesterday I did 4DS Kickbox, legs only. No premix for this, I had to use the chapters, but it was easy. 45 Minutes, 249 calories.

Diane Sue, just curious, where would you get a crochet pattern for manatees? Then did you stuff them somehow? I just bought yarn for a hat, found a free pattern on Pinterest. I know this sounds dumb, but what does Met value indicate?

Judy, good job on getting those numbers down. It sounds like Drop Box is more for pictures and video sharing.

Diane Sue, so you can use your DVD player to stream Cathe Live? That would be awesome! Yes, MFP has some quirks, that's for sure. Do you use a desktop or your app to access it?

Carolyn, now you and Diane Sue make me want to do KCM Strength & Stamina. :). I think the one I did ( Cardio Circuit Challenge Express), was different from Cardio Core Circuit....I actually like the Live version of that one a lot. Cardio Circuit Challenge has a lot of high impact moves, it's like every time she starts something new you have to figure out how to modify it.

Valerie, I agree with your take on Big Pharma....sometimes it is just darn scary what they are doing. Your numbers are great!

Lori, best to be careful with having diabetes. My overall total dropped 56 points when I lost 20 pounds. Not sure if your DR would want to see if you could lower with doing something like that or what Judy did. My doctor is part of a large group, and they also have a site where you can get all your test results, meds, etc.

A workout, then class later tonight...

Take care,

Today I plan on doing Low amax and some abs. My daughter may be coming to go to the library and tonight is Wednesday family dinner. I am making a paleo white chicken chili that I got from Pinterest and am loving.

Valerie, it is scarey how government allows inhealthy amounts of junk in our food because it makes money, and pharmaceutical companies push those medications. We just have to be responsible for ourselves and have doctors who have our trust.

Lori, ha, I sometimes skip details because I have left my phone upstairs. I guess those extra steps and stairs don't look that inviting once the workout is over :) The system that your doctor has sounds great.

Deb, I have so much yarn. I need to make lots of things Lol. I made my grandson a whole set of Star Wars figures. I had to buy the pattern book for that. I got the manatee patterns free off of pinterest. I stuff them with fiberfill stuffing and use the snap in eyes that are attached midway through the project. Some of those free patterns are great and sometimes I have ran into problems and had to come up with a fix. I read them over now and look at reviews. I am pretty sure I can stream Cathe from the blu ray player as it is just like being on the computer or a device. I bookmarked the page so it woul be easy to get to. Since I dont have the streaming right now, I cant try it out.

Today's workout is finished:) Low Max, 71 minutes, 463 calories, met value 6.0, heart rate average 136, max 172, 5,808 steps. For Abs I did Butts and Guts stability ball abs, 15 minutes, 62 calories, met value 3.5, heart rate average 98, max 121, 82 steps. I used my weighted bosu ballast ball for this one. Total time was 86 minutes, calories burned 525, 5,890 steps.

Deb here is a link about the Met values. https://cathe.com/how-to-use-met-values-to-improve-your-workout/ Cathe's numbers are a guide and our fitness levels, weight , resting heart rate all tend to make a difference.

Today I did Cardio Core Circuit which was 50 minutes and 330 calories burned. My average heart rate was 126 and maximum heart rate 148. It was a good workout and I enjoyed it for the most part. I did some high impact and some modifications.

Deb, Strength and Stamina is a good total body workout. Kelly works you differently than Cathe which is one of the things that I like. Don’t get me wrong, I love Cathe, but there are times when I want something different. My club uses Dropbox for our shared documents like stock reports and meeting agendas. It’s very convenient and saves a lot of paper and ink.

Valerie, my numbers are similar to yours: total cholesterol 187, HDL 78, triglycerides 82, LDL 92. You are so right about pharmaceutical companies. I listen to drug advertising for small problems with a staggering list of side effects including death with amazement! There is a drug for everything these days and so many people are willing to take them.

Lori, Strength and Stamina is not a new workout. I think it is from 2015, but I just bought it during Kelly’s New Years sale. The Build and Burn set that you preordered will work very well for you because of the length. It’s easy to add to another workout.

Diane Sue, thanks for the link to MET values. That’s one of those things that I read about once or twice but didn’t remember the details. I never use the workout manager.

Judy, I think I will try a Linda Wooldridge workout—a short one. Her workouts look like something that I might like.

Enjoy your day everyone.

My good labs numbers are to some degree good genes. we all should pick our parents wisely! I will be the first to say diet and exercise doesn't work the same for everyone but it should be the first approach. I don't think government agencies should be deciding what is "healthy" for everyone in the food supply. too intrusive and won't be the same for everyone or allow free choice.
I think government is somewhat responsible for keeping the food supply safe, companies honest, and requiring factual documentation of ingredients, and that safety standards are enforced. including the supplement industry, which gets away with a lot. To each his own on what they take, but truth in advertising seems to be losing. I personally don't I think DH will get improved numbers since he has cut back on goodies. the basics of our diet are excellent, but he was "supplementing" ... too much candy and cookies. he loves his sweets. he can afford to lose a few lbs, and maybe that will drop his cholesterol. He thinks he has lost a little already. Men!.
I personally take few supplements or want to. vitamin D in winter, and glucosamine.

Deb, terrific your chol dropped like that. DH has been lower but never low. he had a problem with every single statin he's tried, and he wanted them to work but he can't tolerate them even at very low level use. his HDL, despite all the exercise, refuses to go above 35 ish. no history of heart disease in his family either, so I wonder how significant the numbers are. so we are on an all out effort to bring them down.

carolyn, I think it was a MAJOR blunder to allow drug companies to do "direct to consumers marketing". It is not legal in most other countries as far as I know. I won't say "all" . when I see adds for chemotherapy drugs on TV that are incredibly expensive and target only a select few people, you just KNOW how much money is being made when those people go to their docs and demand whatever it is. at the end there is the list of potential side effects that is a mile long.

I have looked back at the workout I did before the PF showed up. I think I know the move that caused it. nothing difficult. it is those tiny little jumps in place that cathe does often between other moves. those little teeny hops where your feet don't leave the ground. I suspected it several years ago. I looked back at the day before and it was LIS. this is something I suspected before. not a big move! I don't notice a problem at the time, and it's certainly not difficult but I think that's the one.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Travis Eliot's Yin Yoga and today I did Cycle Sweat. For Cycle Sweat my average heart rate was 122 and max was 156. Calories burned was 403.

Deb-Yes, I think Drop Box is more for sharing files and videos. That's great that your cholesterol came down so much!

Diane Sue-That's weird about Purple Player. I have it but I've never done much with it. Sounds like it's not that great. I'm with you, I'll do almost anything to avoid taking medications and I definitely don't want to take a statin if I don't need to.

Carolyn-I think you will like Linda's workouts. I agree about the drug advertisements. So many horrible side effects. Many times it seems like the side effects are considerably worse than the condition the drug is supposed to be treating.

Valerie-I so agree with you about the pharmaceutical companies. I believe they are behind all of the lowering of cholesterol and bp limits, to such extreme levels that almost everyone, including children, needs to be on medication.
That's good that you figured out the move that caused your PF.

Lori-This is the cardiovascular screening that we do:
https://www.beaumont.org/treatments/heart-vascular-screening
Our doctor has a system like yours. We can log in and see our results online. It's so nice to be able to do that.

Yes Judy. even kids need to be on bp meds! makes sense to me!. DH about hits the ceiling when he sees some new recommendations. my doc was trying to push me on bp meds last visit. I was 140 /80. I politely said "no way". If you get pressured, it is useful to take your own BP readings at home, record the readings on a card with date and time. It's even called "white coat hypertension"! so many people get stressed at a physical ( or the drive there) that their readings run higher than usual. If you document your readings at home, most docs will accept that as accurate.

the clinic I go to also has online results available that I can access easily.

Only one way to be sure about the PF move. I've done it many times without issue but I'm not testing it to find out.

Carolyn, some of those drug commercials actually seem to cause more of what they are supposed to be trying to correct. It is really annoying to me. You listen to all of the "it could cause" stuff and wonder why anyone would want to use it. They sound like more misery to me. I hope I never really need them. I used to take Boniva and read the paperwork that came with the prescription and I told my doctor that I was not taking it anymore. Why would I take it for my bones when it says it is for the back and can cause bone loss?? Anyway, she just shrugged and said okay. My bone mass stays the same on my scale. I had it drop for a short time by .1% and using collagen and making sure I get some calcium in my diet and if needed a bit of supplementation with d3 and k it went back to where it seems to stay. It used to be that I trusted doctors and the medical industry, but I have lost a lot of that trust over the years.

Valerie, that is interesting that those little pump moves would cause your foot pain. I guess it would be similar to the releve move in the chair and bar work with my feet. Those bother them, but I don't do it all of the time so it the pain lets up quickly. I thought maybe it was possibly the muscles in the bottom of my feet. Maybe not?

Judy, I have used drop box a bit, but really have not found it real useful. It was a place to put my fitness guides and that sort of thing. I send all of my pictures to an SD card in my phone and tablet. Then I sync them to the computer and external. No need for drop box. Anyway, I try to keep as much of my personal stuff out of the cloud as I can. That is getting near impossible though. I want to remember to get the Vimeo app and see if I can pull up Kelly on there if I purchase her streaming. I just need a log in to get it on my Sony Blu ray player.

Good evening ladies,

This morning I subbed in a Lekfit bounce for All Out Low Impact. My right knee was feeling off with the workout but felt fine with bouncing so I went with it. I wore really high heels yesterday at work so that could have been the issue. I have some 5inch jessica simpson boots that I love but yesterday I was up and down the stairs more than I would have liked wearing them! This was my only workout today and it was about 40 minutes.

Well in speaking with my doctor she would like to start me on meds since the numbers keep increasing. Need to really think about this and do more research. Surprisingly, my husband says I should start.

Deb...have you started a rotation? Or just freestyle. I wish I could knit or crochet. My mom made beautiful things. She tried teaching me but I never got into it and gave up. I regret it now. That is great you have lowered your cholesterol that much!

Diane Sue...I bet the Chicken Chily is delicious! Great workout today. I loved Butts and Gutts and have done it a million times! I should revisit as it has been a while and it will seem fresh. That is kind of scary with Boniva. Didn’t Sally Fields promote it at one time?

Judy...your workout today sounds great. I wish I enjoyed yoga. I use dropbox all the time. Love that I have all my documents/information on all my devices at any given moment. I have also sent videos to family members using it. I use it so much for work my company pays the 9.99 fee a month for extra storage. It is great. For my annual conference I used to bring this huge binder with all the contracts etc. now I just bring my ipad knowing everything is stored in dropbox. :) thanks for the link. I will be

Carolyn..great job on Cardio Core Circuit. I mentioned to Deb I love the standing abs in this one. Yes the length is what interested me with build and burn, plus the presale price on amazon I thought was decent. I have only done a couple of Linda’s workouts and I like what I have done.

Valerie...good you think you found what you think caused the PF. That is crazy with all your workouts this would cause it...but I guess your foot just does not like it. I have simple moves I stay away from too. Our bodies quickly tell us what it dislikes doesn’t it!

Have a great night all!

Lori, Drop Box sounds like it is perfect for your needs. I do not know how anyone walks around in those heels for any length of time. I think that they look nice, but my feet do not like it. I think the highest heel I have is some low top boots that are open up the sides and a zipper on the heel and they are 3 inch. that is plenty for me. Yes, Sally Fields advertised for Boniva at one time.

I did 15 running on the treadmill, abs from HR, and MM chest from Ice. I easily went to 15 lbs on all moves. that felt too light but cathe was using 12's so I used a little caution. last time I used 12 and it was easy, but 15 didn't make it very much harder. used 15 for the whole workout except the first presses which were too easy.

well, I THINK the little jumps caused the PF problem. Impossible to be sure except do it again and again until I find out the hard way. I seem to remember suspecting this the last time. I'm going to skip those and side step instead.

I keep thinking Boniva caused jaw bone necrosis and dentists are wary of doing any work because of problems with jaw bone deteriorating. very weird that a drug taken to strengthen bone would do the opposite in another area. I think it's on the release form you need to sign off on before implants etc, where they will not do the procedure if you are taking any of that class of drugs.
It might work fine for some but you really need to read the fine print before deciding. some people do fine with statins, but a lot of people don't. DH gets severe muscle and joint pain even on low doses. and now he has this weird nasal congestion where he can't breathe at night and has to get up and walk up and down the stairs to clear his sinuses. he is bailing on the last statin attempt.

Weights today. I cant make up my mind which to do.

Valerie, good idea just to d o side steps. I remember my dentist checking each vi d it to see if I was still taking Boniva, somthat is probably true.
