Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/31

Good evening ladies,

This morning I did a short workout. WS3 Boggie It. I had heard this one was not really intense so I bounced it out on the trampoline and used my hand weights and ankle weights. I needed to improvise on a couple of moves but no big deal. I am so quick to come up with a similar move that works well on the trampoline. It worked well and I will use the trampoline to do this workout again. It was my intent to workout longer but Nilla was just active this morning so I wanted to spend time with her. She was demanding my attention. I know these days are numbered so I was there for her.

We are preparing for that nasty storm tomorrow. Ugh. I am ok being snowed in. Just do not want to lose power since it has been so cold. I am making plenty of coffee tonight and putting in a thermos. Plus we have a ton of battery packs for our phones. We have pulled together our candles and flashlights and we are ready to go. Notice I put coffee before anything else!!!

Deb...Yup...way too much plank work for my liking in these workouts. I do not mind them here and there but I knew I would have the dread factor so they needed to go. My left shoulder would be on fire. I will still update the list. I get all the info from these forums when she posts. I will update this week. I know it has been a while. That pile up sounds horrible.

Valerie...$200 is a great investment to be able to monitor from afar. Your pile up sounds horrible too. I was taught also to leave plenty of space inbetween cars. Now everybody rides everyones tails. Drives me crazy.

Diane Sue...So sorry your back is hurting. I do not get why so plank intensive in these workouts. Perhaps there are premixes that eliminates some? Cathe amazes me that she can continue to workout like she does.

Carolyn....wow can’t believe you have not received your dvds yet!!!!

Hi Judy!!!!

Lori, I looked at the premixes and there was not any premixes that broke down the workouts to certain body specific moves etc.. I suppose looking at the workouts a person could just do certain body parts and skip others. There is not mixing up two cardios, but mixes to do a cardio two times. Options of push or pull with the mixed hi lo cardio and the shred but not the two cardios together. I think there was something about how much they could fit on a disc?? Anyway, there is not as many options as you usually get imo. That is sweet that Nilla was active and wanted attention today. I got Gertie a new Kong Wubba toy. She has had one for several months and had got one of the balls out finally. It was still usable with the other ball that squeaked, but I put it somewhere when my 3 year old grandson was here and I could not find. It. I put it up because he likes to play with her but will say go get it and still be holding the toy , so she tries to grab it from his little hands. I have been working on this. I don't want him to miss the toy. Anyway, she was thrilled. We tossed it and fetched for awhile and then she laid it in front of her on her bed and just snuggled it. Of course she had to show my husband when he came home and the game was on again. My back feels better this evening.

Carolyn, did you get the email saying that your dvds had shipped? I hope that you get them soon.

Lori we try to do things "remotely" within reason. its nice to be able to see and react quickly. the window camera was a late add on. I took pics of the driveway when we were there last January never thinking they would be so useful. actually I went out to use the porta pottie and looked at the driveway, could see the snow drift the builder had plowed out a few days before, and thought, "I wonder if that might be useful". so I snapped a few quick pics from the shade of the porta pottie. it has been invaluable. we used the drift pics to set up the snow fences. and from there was the idea to get a small camera to mount in the window. no guarantee every year will be the same... but better than zero info.
strong work on the coffee thermos!. Hope it's been over hyped but better be prepared. we have a variety of flash lights and lanterns, and can always retreat to our camper with propane to boil some water. we usually have power outs along with storms like that. now that we have a scasino nearby, we get power back on sooner. the absolute only advantage to living near one.
Really if you try to leave any space between you and the next car, 23 vehicles will zoom in to use it up until you are almost not going forward anymore. and then if there's a problem, everyone is piled up like cord wood. DH learned in CA and apparently it's some sort of "code of living" to leave zero space between you and the bumper in front. tailgating and then you crash.
Carolyn so many packages were mis directed with all the holiday mail. hope they either find or replace.

we split wood today so that was my workout. haven't done it in a while. usually I get sore along my back and rib area so will see tomorrow.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. I did go for a facial though. Nice and relaxing.

Diane Sue, this stuff used to be easier for all of us! LOL....:). when I read those descriptions from you and the other poster I had to shake my head, "what was Cathe thinking?"...Thanks for checking out the premixes to see if there are any that remove some of the planks....Glad your back if feeling better.

Valerie, John had something removed from his back yesterday, ( I thought of you and your recent surgery). they think it is a basil cell carcinoma, having it biopsied. If so, he will have a larger part removed. For now she said change the bandage every day and use Vaseline. Watch for infection. Yes, I think you will probably need a snow blower for the new place! We were taught in driving school to leave 10 feet etc too between cars, but with how people drive today, it's impossible.

Carolyn, how do you like the KCM workouts so far?

Lori, you are really prepared for the upcoming storm, that's great. Yes, I can agree that when little Nilla wants attention, she should get it! :). Thanks (in advance) for updating the list....it is so helpful.

Waving to Judy!

Taking my car in to have the battery checked and the remote hatch is not always working...

Take care,

Deb mine was a squamous cell and very small. The scrape biopsy removed the whole thing. they go back and take a chunk out surrounding the original site after they are sure exactly what it is. they make sure the borders are all clear. he will probably be scheduled for a full skin exam to be sure there aren't any other lesions. most problems are sun exposed areas. they look you over completely. it doesn't take very long. I had two spots on my face that she wasn't sure about so she froze them.

I'm feeling Ok about not getting this series. It sounds harder than what I want to do.... not that there won't be good parts, but not convinced I'll be doing cathe's advanced things. I'd rather do things that don't need a lot of modifying.
we did wood splitting yesterday for an hour or so, and I can tell today I did something different. not sore, but it works things in a different way. I already have plenty of challenging workouts and with my current DVD player, the sound on older disks is better.

Today I did Build and Burn Lower Body Tabata for 26 minutes, 130 calories, average heart rate 112, and maximum heart rate 154. After that I did a portion of Low Impact Sweat One for 21 minutes and 113 calories. My average heart rate with that was 120 and maximum heart rate 137. My total workout time was 50 minutes.

My Fit Split dvds just arrived. Cathe customer service tracked the package and sent me the tracking info. It arrived in Atlanta on Friday December 30, but for some reason was delayed at a facility across town. I don’t understand that, but at least I have it now. I will preview the dvds before I do any of the workouts.

Deb, I like the Build and Burn series but I wish that the workouts were actually 30 minutes. That are just a little too short for me to feel like I have had a complete workout on most days.

Valerie, you are right about trying to leave space between your vehicle and others on the road. Other drivers always jump into the space. They seem to feel that they must be bumper to bumper.

Diane Sue, I’m glad that your back feels better. I never receive the shipping notification emails for some reason.

Lori, it’s good that you are prepared for the storm. It sounds like it will be intense. Coffee in the thermos is important!

Judy, stay warm and safe.

Deb, the facial sounds nice and relaxing.

Carolyn, glad your Fit Split dvds arrived. I was wondering when I saw someone in Japan got theirs yesterday. I had a package from Amazon with Gerties dog toy that kept saying delayed and then it would say arriving today. They repeatedly sent me these messages so I was surprised when it came yesterday. Originally it was not supposed to arrive till Thursday. Maybe weather delays? It is odd you didn't get notification on the shipping.

Valerie, there are some good portions of the workouts and some that could just be skipped. The weights are pretty good. I think I will like them done in the shorter format though, but was wanting to see what they entailed to decide how I will use them if I don't care for the rotations.

Hi Everyone,

Tuesday I did a 90 minute indoor ride, "Seek Out Cycling", http://www.seekoutcycling.com/. I did one of the Base Builder in Denver rides. After years of doing Spinervals, I've done them all, some many times so I thought I would do something different. Yesterday I did Walk Strong Boost Metabolism + Muscle Total Body Focus. This morning I did my first Fit Split workout, Boxing Bootcamp/Legs & Glutes. I enjoyed the warm up and boxing section but I had to modify the leg workout more than I would have liked. I don't do gliding exercises anymore because of my low back so I just did lunge variations for those.

Deb-I don't mind doing one or two sets of planks per workout but it seems like there are too many in these new workouts. I'm not surprised that others are mentioning it.

Diane Sue-I agree about the to the floor and back up moves. I don't really care for those either, at least not so many of them. I tend to have low back issues anyway. I don't think I'm going to try the fit split bonus abs for a while.

Valerie-I agree about the metabolic workouts helping with endurance. I am also impressed with how high my heart rate gets during these workouts.

Carolyn-Thanks! It is very cold here, and will be for a couple more days. Hopefully next week will be better. I feel the same way about Build & Burn. I was surprised that they weren't 30 minute workouts. I've noticed that when Jessica Smith has 30 minute workouts, they are usually 30-35 minutes long.

Lori-I agree about being there for Nilla. That storm sounds really bad. I hope you don't lose power. Having coffee ready is a good idea.

Judy, I really do not care for the gliding discs for cardio. I would much rather them just be used for strength work. That boxing section is fun. I think it is the X Train low impact floor section that has the down to the floor, switch legs and come up with a kick out that I have always found rather painful. It is not a good move for me.

Good evening ladies,

We have received a ton of snow! Worked from home today and glad I did not have to drive in. I did 90 minutes of barre bounce. I chose the workouts so there were all intervals of gentle bounce and lower barre work. My legs were tired at the end and will feel this tomorrow.

Diane Sue....glad your back is better. Oh that is so cute gertie snuggled with it. That would make my heart melt if I saw that!!!! I do not mind gliding discs. I have read some do the same moves without them and still get a pretty intense workout. Thanks for info on Pull. I did not edit the weight workputs at all. They looked great the way the are. Hoping the guide is published soon. Would love to start a rotation next week

Valerie...splitting wood entitles you to a rest day! How has your leg been? I know you had some problems. Hoping all is good now. This series is not too bad. Just way too many planks. I was looking at the Bonus Abs and knew immediatley I would never do it

Deb...I have had only one facial and I loved it. Don’t know why I do not continue with them every now and then! I love my little Nilla so much. I have had her for so long. She is in my arms right now as I type with one hand. :) hope all is negative with John’s biopsy. I have had a couple of things removed and so far all has been negative.

Carolyn....yeah!!! Your dvds finally made it!

Judy...I love Bootcamp but have not done the legs workout yet. The reviews have been great and mention it is really tough. 90 min ride - Awesome! It is 6pm and so far so good and have not lost power. We have a plow coming for our driveway. Bob usually uses the snowblower but there is way too much for it. I do not mind planks here and there but there seemed to be a lot in this series.

Have a great night all!

So far no extra soreness from today's weights. I was wondering how I would feel after doing both pull and push. I am glad these are not heavy on lower body since I already did plenty with the lower body day workout.

Judy, those cycling movies look pretty good.

Lori, that is great that you got to stay in to work. I keep hoping for the Fit Split user guide. I saw someone asked and they said hopefully next week :0 I guess they have a lot to do and a lot of people to try to please. At least we got the dvds and downloads :) I copied and printed the exercises from the workout manager and then penciled in the weights and information as I did the workouts today. When I saw plyo push ups I was thinking of some in other instructors workouts where they are literally jumping feet and hands in the air and coming back down. Talk about a lot of shoulder stress. Sagi did some in Hammer and Chisel, I believe the plyometric workout, and I tried doing it on my knees with my hands on the rebounder. That is where the bungee type of rebounder would probably have more give. It still hurt my shoulders though. Cathe did not jump the hands to high coming back down and in and out. Gertie loves this toy so much. She keeps it by her on her doggie bed while she sleeps. If we pay attention to her she grabs it and is ready to play :) Everytime my husband goes out the door she gets it and waits for him to come back in. It came to the workout this morning and I tossed it a few times , but then I told her enough because doing weights and writing and tossing a toy does not work well. So, she laid with it on her upstairs mat and chewed her nylabone and watched me. She was the same way with the last one of these toys till it got worn and she discovered the ball inside. It lasted several months so I am fine with that. I tried to take a picture with my phone awhile ago and of course she quickly jumped up. She does not like me taking her picture. I don't know why. When I catch her it is luck. It is rather funny the things she fears and the things she doesn't.

Judy I will take a look at those movies in the am. I need to have more than cathes spins for some variety.

I did total body metabolic today. I didn't get very sore from log splitting so that's good. suddenly TBM seems too easy. it still gets my heart rate up nicely but I think I've done it too much. funny how that works... all of a sudden, I want something different.
Lori my leg is doing OK. I will have to be more diligent on sunscreen, I don't want to do this again. I usually put on more clothes as I don't like the feel of sunscreen. but i don't like the feel of surgery either.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, but I will be doing something today. I need to get in a better mind frame. Hoping a workout will do this. I did need a new battery. It was also the problem with the remote hatch not working...the battery did not have enough strength to lift the hatch. Even though my New Car warranty expired in August, Subaru covered the battery cost. :). I really like that company a lot! Probably why we have had 5 of them so far and will most likely get another when we need a new car.

Valerie, I really hope they do a full skin exam on him when he gets it removed. Wood splitting is definitely a workout! It is a very strange spot for John's thing....middle of his back. How the heck he got it there I have no idea. It's not like he is out without a shirt on...he never does that.

Carolyn, glad your DVD's arrived! Especially when Diane Sue said that someone in Japan had gotten theirs! I agree...KCM should have made those workouts at least 30 minutes.

Diane Sue, yes, the facial was wonderful. I would like to do it every month, but the cost is too steep for that. I would like to see the rotations in the User's Guide for the new workouts. I thought we would have it by now. Any of the floor and back up moves, like Mountain Climbers, I have been using my Firm wooden step and not going all the way to the floor. I still get the cardio benefit. Which toy is it that lasts so long with Gertie?

Judy, I am not too fond of the gliding disc exercises either....I will see what they are like and maybe take your lead and sub with lunges or squats. It is 0 degrees here now and the wind chill is -20. All schools are cancelled, they did it yesterday knowing what the temps were going to be.

Lori, that is great that you are able to work from home. Also that you got a 90 minute workout in! So cute, little Nilla sitting with you while you are at the computer. She must love it when "Mom" gets to stay home from work. :)

A workout, (maybe the latest Live which sounds like fun)..."Triple Thread" : 15 minutes of cardio, 15 minutes of Legs, and 15 minutes of Upper Body....

Stay warm!

Deb, here is a link to the dog toy https://www.amazon.com/KONG-Wubba-E...170&sr=8-6&keywords=kong+wubba+dog+toys+large
I sometimes use my pull up push up combo stand when doing mountain climbers and it is easier on the wrists. I never purchased a Firm step. I just used a tool box step bench that we had and my husband had made me a wood step fot a shorter bench. It was quite some time before i even aquired the Step company step. It seemed to me the users guide was always out quickly after the dvds. I guess now the On Demand work has has slowed things down. I put my workouts in the Workout manager even though I cannot see them. I think in the past they showed up once they had the icon feature set up. That is great that subaru took care of your battery.

Valerie, I guess your body has become efficient for the metabolic workout. Thats good the wood chopping didnt leave you too sore.

Good Morning,
Today I did Build and Burn Kettlebell Kickbox Fusion for 25 minutes and 186 calories burned. Average heart rate was 131 and maximum heart rate 155. I followed that with part of a gethealthyu live workout, Kettlebell Cardio led by Jodi Sussner. That was 22 minutes, 106 calories, average heart rate 111, and maximum heart rate 140. The Kettlebell Cardio was 45 minutes for the full workout and I hope to do the entire thing soon. I used 10# and 15# kettlebells for both workouts. I really like working with kettlebells and I wish I had tried them sooner. Gethealthyutv is the Chris Freytag site, but there are several trainers working with her. I like the variety of workouts and and the amount of time. There are short 10-20 minute workouts and longer ones for 30-45 minutes.

Cathe posted a Fit Split rotation for January (it’s also on the calendar). I plan to start that next week after I have previewed all of the dvds. I do hope the user guide is up soon because I like to see the full breakdown for each dvd. I like to print the pages to use as workout sheets for strength training.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

Today I did Kelly Coffey Build and Burn Kettlebell Kickbox Fusion, 25 minutes, heart rate average 136, max 177, 1,645 steps. I then did Fit Split Boxing Bootcamp timesaver #1 just kickboxing, 35 minutes, heart rate average 130, max 161, 229 calories, 3070 steps. Total time was 61 minutes, calories burned 395. Total steps so far today 5,403. I wore 1# gloves and used the 15# kettlebell for Kellys workout this morning.

Carolyn, nice work today with kickbox and kettlebells :) The nice thing about kettlebells is the non impact work and it gets the heart rate up. I will have to check out Cathe's January Rotation. I looked there a couple of days ago and there was not one. For the workout yesterday I copied and pasted the exercises from the workout manager and then wrote on that sheet. It is nice when you have the user guid and an idea of the weights you will be using before you start.

Let me take back the words about not getting sore. I should know by now it takes me 2 days for DOMS to develop from wood chopping. It is mostly down my back side from shoulders to calves. I don't have the upper body strength DH does, so I throw my entire body into the ax swing making this a total body exercise. not too that bad, but I know I worked things differently. raining today so probably no chopping. will do a workout probably a different one from Ice just to get things moving. or maybe a spin. won't be until this afternoon.

so cold... iguanas are falling from trees? what an image!. I honestly didn't know florida had iguanas! the picture is hilarious and also that iguanas are not preferred residents in florida anyway. ETA in case you don't get this picture..https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/its-so-cold-in-florida-iguanas-are-falling-from-trees/
Deb my understanding of the procedure is they remove the lesion. it goes to pathology for a definitive diagnosis. Mine took about a week here. little skin lesions are not easy to categorize for sure. if a basal cell carcinoma ( bcc) or squamous cell (scc), they schedule a surgery to remove anything left of the lesion plus a 'standard" amount of tissue around it. I was surprised at how big a chunk it was. local anesthetic, I had zero pain or discomfort. then standard to schedule a 'full skin" exam shortly after, plus every 6 months for the future. if nothing else turns up, then the frequency drops off. if there are spots that they are possibly troublesome, they freeze them and check on them later to make sure they are gone. some areas get lots of sun exposure over time, like face, top of ears, top of shoulders, back of hands. anyway, hope his turns out benign.
nice the dealer handled it for you. I'm surprised a battery failed at a year. usually they last lots longer. but the right thing so do to keep a repeat customer happy. I have the original battery in my '04 but it doesn't get that cold here.

Hope you are all doing well in the deep snowy freeze up. I don't envy you except for it being a likely day off.

Valerie, that picture of the iguana is something I would not have thought of. I found it weird when my daughter had a lot of scorpions in her swimming pool along with frogs one year. My daughter has removed skin cancers from both my husband and me. She always takes more around it to be sure she got all of it. It really does seem much bigger than the spot we see. Now the one on my nose was so tiny and right in the crease so it was not so bad. I had a larger one mid back and I know it is because one time we went to the lake with friends and the guys went out in the boat with the sunscreen. My romper that was over my suit had an open back and I burnt my mid back really bad. Dark spots showed up afterward. It got so itchy and I had my daughter check it out. My husband had a face one and top back of his ear. He wears hats whenever he is out in the sun and we slather with sunscreen when out on the bike. He does not like greasy sunscreen though. Years ago though neither of us was very good about sunscreen. Too late to reverse all of the adverse reactions to the sun.
I tend to get delayed muscle soreness too.

I just read a post on Video Fitness from someone who has the same problem with her STS dvds that I had. Her description of the problem is exactly what I described here where the first and last dvds have no problems but the ones in between have the cloudy looking film on them and the dvds freeze. Her thoughts mirrored mine—the case is causing the problem. My dvds came in 6 cases as did hers. I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one with this problem.
