Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/31

Lori, I think that I had so many things going on with my body and my hair suffered. I also have a thyroid condition and I take synthroid. That also affects hair and nails.

Happy New Year! Today I did FIt Split Boxing Boot camp /legs and glutes, 58 minutes, 410 calories, heart rate average 125/ max 172, 3,899 steps. I added the Bonus abs separately (there is a basic mix that adds them ) 13 minutes, 68 calories, heart rate average 113, max 148, 229 steps. I ended with the lower body stretch from Suzanne Bowen Barre Amped Strengthen and Stretch , 20 minutes, 44 calories. 522 calories, 91 minutes. I used Cathe's weight for everything except the squats which I used 25's for. I usually try to go with what she does till I get a feel for the workout. Also it will be easier to write down when we get the users guide and work sheets. I was looking trying to decide what to do tomorrow from Fit Split. It looks like at least three of the dvds has dead lifts in them. I don't care for doing dead lifts too many days in a week. I might have to go light on some of those days. I will have to check out the format she uses. The abs were hard because there is so much stuff that taxes my shoulders. I liked it though, as it is pretty tough.

Carolyn, my husband is watching football. I feel like I could use a nap LOL No plans today.

Deb, I like walnuts in my oatmeal too, when I eat it. I don't eat a real breakfast often. Breakfast may be in the afternoon :)

Judy, it is so cold here that I have avoided going out to the garage for things. I wish they would get the user guide out ahead of time too. I am not sure why that comes after they get the on demand set up. I did would have liked to look at the exercises ahead of time and worksheets would be nice.

Valerie, maybe it is just so cold that the furnace is not able to keep up with the temperature setting. Our house stays around 68 to 69 downstairs when I have the thermostat set for 71. Upstairs is the opposite and that floor gets warmer and I have to set the thermostat down a bit. That an be a problem when you are not close to just run and check.

Carolyn, I think my hair would still have dark blonde mixed with the grey. It is dark looking when it grows out too much and has silvery streaks. My grandfather had very little grey when he was in his 80's. That is why light blond shows my roots so much when it grows out. Still the Madison Reed does not cover unless it is an N shade. I even left it on my roots extra time this last time with the cap on. I would imagine getting used to the color change would take awhile, but even more so if you were wearing wigs. My sister in law had her graying hair come back it's original auburn color after chemo.

Lori, I hope things work out for you and you get the long workout in in the morning. I am wanting to try to get back into a bit more stretching. I notice the difference when I do not do it.

Valerie-I was hoping that I would be able to transition easily to grey and not have to bother with color, but that didn't happen for me either. I go through a similar process when I get my hair colored, roots first then the rest of my hair.

Lori-Thanks for the tips on using iMovie and the Amazon link! I may get the Sandisk drive. That looks like it would work really well.
Cardio Hit is a good one! I'm going to use ankle weights the next time I do it.

Diane Sue- I hate going into the garage too. It's so cold, right now it's 9, with a windchill of -2. It looks like Thursday and Friday are going to be the worst days, then next week things get back to normal, in the 20-30 degree range.

Carolyn-your hair sounds very pretty. I also have a friend taking Tamoxifen. I'm not sure it it's affected her hair yet.

Good morning,

I ended up going to my brothers alone yesterday for dinner. John has had a relapse of sort of the cold he had. It was better for him to stay home and try to sleep.

Diane Sue, wow, 5 degress....that's pretty low for your area?

Carolyn, your day sounds great. We watched the hockey game at my brothers before, and after dinner. It was the Winter Classic, where the 2 teams play outside. The Buffalo team and the NY Rangers played in NY at a rink made at the baseball field. It was 14 degrees. My cousins were actually at the game, they went to NYC for New Years Eve....(crazy I know). Your hair sounds pretty.

Judy, I hope you and Chris do not come down with anything. Your plan for yesterday sounded perfect to me.

Valerie, that is great that you can be alerted to any issue at the Montana house by your phone. I hope everything is ok. I need to see if The Crown is on Prime.....I forgot to check yesterday. I have only gotten my roots done, sometimes hi-lights, not an all over color.

Lori, I hope you get to do the workout you wanted this morning. Wow that sounds like a complicated process, but probably once it is done, it is not so bad.

Meeting my friend and her husband at the new radiologist's office this morning. She was discharged yesterday, but is really having a hard time. She cannot be alone any longer. :(.

Take care,

Deb, I hope John gets to feeling better. Sometimes because the immune system is already compromised a person can pick up another virus.. i read that once when it seemed my childrens colds were lasting waybtoo long. My husband picked up a pneumonia after having the flu once and was in the hospital for 8 days. He went back to work too soon and a carrier had to have got blood in the food he ate. He was on antibiotics for two days and got worse. It was a nightmare, as my children were all in school then and I had my own daycare. Now we are always more careful to stay home when we are not well as much as possible. I feel so bad for your friend. Oklahoma gets really low temps some years and others it will be in the teens. The same thing goes for snow. Once in awhile Oklahoma City will get a lot of snow, but most of the time it is just a little. Today we are starting out at 13. It is supposed to get up to 24 :)

Deb-I feel so bad for your friend and her family. I'm sure that they appreciate all the support that you are giving them. I hope the new radiologist can offer some hope.

Today I did Fit Split Low Impact Cardio/ Metabolic conditioning, 49 minutes, 324 calories, heart rate average 124/max 155, 2,155 steps. I then did Barre Amped Strength and stretch relaxation stretch and bonus ball stretch 20 minutes, 40 calories. I used Cathe's weights for the metabolic conditioning workout, Total time was 69 minutes, 364 calories. I wish there was not quite so much of the to the floor and back up moves. I think the older I get the less I like that type of work. Maybe part is because I am still sore from yesterday. My oblique area and low back are sore after yesterday's bonus abs from Fit Split.

This morning I did Build and Burn Cardio Core for 27 minutes and 196 calories. My average heart rate was 127 and maximum heart rate 150. After that I did WS3 Cardio Hit which is a boxing workout for 31 minutes. Calories burned with that was 219, average heart rate 131 and maximum heart rate 164.

Sadly my Fit Split dvds did not come in today’s mail. I am slightly disappointed, but it usually takes 4-5 days for my Cathe orders to come by mail. Since we had a long holiday weekend delivery today was a long shot. In the meantime, I am happy to read everyone’s opinions on the workouts.

Hello to all and wishing you a wonderful day.

I did High reps upper body and the ab workout yesterday. we tried to go ski this morning but it didn't work out. too icy and hammered by 4 wheelers over the weekend. waste of drive time.

Our furnace had a problem with a gas valve which got replaced yesterday. it was unfortunate for the maintenance guy, but like he said, furnaces don't care if it's a holiday or not. we paid extra for a "smart" thermostat that alerts us to whatever it's doing or not doing. so late sunday night I started seeing low temp alerts. this happened not too long ago so we were not terribly surprised. the first fix we thought was temporary but at first thought it was a different problem. It should be OK now. we plan on going there in the winter so did not ever plan on shutting everything down completely. we winterized it, turned most things off, and left the heat set to 53. we wanted it not to completely freeze and 53 gives a cushion in case there's an issue like this. no sense in keeping it balmy. it gets very cold and windy there.

Judy the fitness endurance issue was addressed pretty well in cathes newsletter today. I think mt biking fits into HIIT well, as do metabolic workouts. I was impressed with how high my heart rate goes in total body metabolic.

Deb, hope there are some options left to offer your friend. there might be a point where the treatment is too onerous to do. my friend with pancreatic succumbed to the last round of treatment. I hope she has good friend ( you, of course) and family support.
One reason I back off exercise when sick is I worry about relapsing, or making the cold drag on too long. I do better if I stay quiet, and gradually restart exercise when any sxs are mostly gone. .

My aunt ( mothers sister) had a beautiful head of hair but she kept dying it dark auburn long after she should have. when she let it go natural, it was the most gorgeous mane of silver white hair!. gorgeous, beautiful. I hoped to maybe inherit but does not look like it. My mother's hair got very thin after tamoxifen and radiation too, but it didn't fill back in after treatment. .

Carolyn, I do not know why Cathe's dvds get to Oklahoma City so quick. It seems most of the time I get mine within a couple of days. That is why both times I couldn't get the downloads to work the dvds showed up the same day we finally got the problem fixed. Yeah for Cathe's taking care of my problem over the holiday weekend, I really expected them to have themselves a long weekend. I hope that you get them tomorrow.

Valerie, I guess with the holiday weekend the 4 wheelers would have been out there. I am sometimes amazed at my heart rate with low impact type workouts, because a lot of the Hiit ones do not get up there much more and I feel like I am working really hard. My grandmother on my mother's side had pretty silver hair and it was thick, but every so often she would color it and make it a blue gray which I never did care for. THe silver color was so much softer and more forgiving.

Good evening ladies!

Well I did get up earlier and was able to do a longer workout. Yeah! Fingers crossed I can continue. This morning was WS3 Total Body and a LEKfit bounce. Great combination together. At first I was not sure how I felt about LEKFit but I can say after doing her workouts for several weeks I have decided I do like them now that I skip thru all the sculpting. My Cathe Live charge hit my cc today. I thought it was mid month so I noted this and plan to cancel at the end of January. After a few months I’ll sign back on to check things out. Figured I will be busy with her new series and bouncing. No workout this evening. We are refinancing our home and the finance company was calling tonight to go over everything.

Diane Sue...I am loving Fit Split. I am waiting for the guide before I do anymore of the workouts. Hoping for a great rotation with these. I thought the boxing bootcamp was fun. I hear you on the up and down in the workouts. I do not enjoy tons of plank work so that is why I removed them. I have it that it flows nice so I do not even realize they are gone when I do the workout. In the future I may add in an exercise that I prefer . Takes the dread out of the workout for me.

Carolyn...that is so odd it takes a long time for you to receive the DVDs. Hoping they arrive tomorrow so you can join in the fun. I really liked how she finished with the leg work in Cardio Hit.

Valerie...very smart with the thermostat. I did not know they had this. Oh technology! Glad everything worked out ok. I like getting Cathe’s newsletters and always look forward to them.

Deb...I am so very sorry about your friend. You are a wonderful friend to her.

Hi to Judy!!!!!!!!!

Lori we had to pay approx. $200 more for the thermostat, but it lets us monitor what's going on from here. we can look at the temp anytime and incr or decr as needed. It alerts us when it drops below or goes above 53degrees. you can then choose to do something or not. we have a key there and a keycode for the garage door opener so we can let repair people in if needed. there are different ways to look at "security" if you live a 12 hr drive away. some things can be reset remotely by us. this was a "part" failure so needed someone to go in and replace. Not sure I'd invest in one of these if I lived ne arby, but for us being so far away , it makes sense.

I did a 40 min spin today.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. My friend started on a new round of radiation. Hoping this will give her some improvement. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers. The weather was really bad yesterday....there was a 75 car pile up on the thruway, between here and Rochester.

Diane Sue, that time with your husband sounds scary. I hope John's goes away soon. He will seem ok, then all of a sudden go into a coughing fit. What type of moves are to the floor and back up from the new workout you did?

Judy, thank you.

Carolyn, that's too bad that your DVD's take longer. I wonder why that it? You are on the East coast....would seem you would get them sooner.

Valerie, that's great that you have a repairman that came out on a holiday and fixed that valve. I bet that gives you peace of mind, especially being at such a distance.

Lori, great that you got the workouts you wanted to do completed in the morning. I can understand why you would cancel the Live workouts ....but we will surely miss your updated lists! :).

Take care,

Deb, I hurt so much when Inwent to bed last night. I think sll of the staining and painting and other work has not helped. I moved a small refrigerator into my workout room along with a small table and other things due to the remodel. Then I worked on putting together an olympic weight bench I got my husband for Christmas. I cant blame it all on the workouts. They just made it worse. The low impact metabolic has walk out walk in planks, walk out plank jacks, mountain climbers gliding style,, the metabolic has squat thrust 2 push ups, dragging plank moguls, plank kickbacks , and monster walks. My wtists were sonsore along with my shoulders last night. Then the bonus abs that I did yesterday is predominantly on the hands or arms, crab kick, bear crawl, pistol planks, side plank hip lifts, straight arm plank toe, moguls, pike curls. My low back hurts ! Today I am going to attempt just the cardio from push and pull workouts. I may be modifying. This stuff used to be easy for me.

Diane Sue,

Now I know why Lori removed all that! There are some complaints over on the "new workout" forum about all the planks and wrist exercises:

Here is part of one of the posts:

"I did the Low Impact Cardio and Metabolic Conditioning first. In that program, you have already used your wrists in seven exercises. In the low impact cardio section, you do (1) walk out walk in planks (2) walk out planks with jacks and (3) mountain climbers (glide style). Then in the metabolic conditioning section, you do (1) squat thrust 2 plank push ups (2) dragging planks / moguls (3) plank tricep kickbanks and (4) tricep push ups. Then when you add on the bonus ab routine all but three of the eleven exercises are "wrist based": (1) crab kicks (2) bear crawls (3) piston planks (4) straight arm plank toe taps (5) mermaids (this one isn't too bad but I put it in here because you are still using your wrist to glide the disc out) (6) elbow to knee (7) moguls and (8) pike curls. There are only three exercises after the piston planks in which you are not on your wrists. "

Deb yes it was a relief especially on a holiday. this is our first winter so some steps are a "test case" for us. we could shut everything down for the winter if needed but then would need to empty frig/freezer and maybe not leave other food products there. or even toiletries. Not sure I want to find out what happens to canned or bottled foods when they freeze.
we were in a big car pile up once, not 75 but 15-20. what a mess. no one was hurt but lots of cars were totaled. our truck and camper were casualties, but we were ok. we were taught to leave one car length of ever 10 mph of speed. try maintaining that in todays traffic.

It sounds like the east coast is going to get some wretched winter weather in the next few days. I don't envy you. snow and ice where it's unusual makes an incredible mess. Seattle is a place like that.

wow diane sue that is one heck of a lot of planks! I like planks but not that many. I especially don't like side planks. oddly, I can't block my feet like it needs. I'm not even sure what all of those are.

Today I just did cardio so I started with Fit Split Cardio Shred timesaver #1 cardio only mix with warm up and stretch, 29 minutes, heart rate average 141, max 167, 224 calories, 2,654 steps. I then did Fit Split Mixed Impact Cardio Timesaver #1 cardio only with w/u and stretch, 28 minutes, heart rate average 138, max 167, 2,585 steps. Total time today was 57 minutes, 416 calories, 5,239 steps. Hopefully I am ready for some more of the weight work tomorrow. Shred uses the step and is a lot of jumping on and off the step. There is a lot of impact in it. Mixed Impact was not too bad. There was enough break between the impact which was not terribly long in each segment. Then again both have some burpee moves in them as well. This is not a great thing for me right now.

Deb, I am glad that I am not the only one who felt this was too much. My wrists hurt quite a lot today. I don't know how Cathe keeps from being in pain from all of that herself.

Valerie, I find it amazing all of the things that people can monitor from their cell phones. The cameras to watch for porch pirates, being able to turn things off and on and adjust things in the home, watching the pets and kids . It is amazing and quite an expense. I hope I never feel so threatened and anxious that I need all of that stuff though. It is nice for you since this is your second home and you cannot just drop in to take care of things. That is a great feature for you.
Those pikes and moves are not easy moves. I had to go back into a child's pose at times because my wrists and shoulders were about to give out. Maybe I shouldn't have done my usual habit of pushing through it because the instructor can. The thing is that you get done with one move and feel grateful it is over and go right into another that is every bit as intimidating. I have a jug of bubbles out on the outdoor shelving that is frozen solid. I could not imagine leaving things like even toiletries without heat. My husband had bought new wood glue and had me put it in the house. Ours that was in the garage was not useful after being in the cold.

Today I did Build and Burn Upper Body Supersets for 32 minutes and 125 calories. Average heart rate was 105 and maximum heart rate 135. I had planned to do a short add-on, but I ran out of time since I had a meeting this morning. I like the Upper Body Supersets except for the reverse grip bench press. I switched to a regular grip after the first set because it felt ackward to me.

Still no dvds for me. I emailed customer service after the mail was delivered but haven’t heard back yet.

Diane Sue, the Low Impact Cardio and Metabolic Conditioning sounds like it has all the moves that I hated from the Low Impact Series. I’ll have to see how it works for me.

Deb, I thought of you when I read about the weather and highway pileup near Buffalo. The weather is very strange. It’s snowing in coastal Georgia and northern Florida today!

Take care everyone and keep warm.

diane sue, we have a camera placed in a front window that we monitor from here also. It keeps watch on our driveway. we are not worried about theft, but snow. last year there was a large drift that blocked it. we put up 2 snow fences to reposition the drift if possible. we want to see if snow on the driveway would block access. if driveway is blocked, a propane delivery can't get in. if we go there, we would have to walk from the road. possible but not ideal. we will probably need to get a snow blower. the size of the drift was too much for the manual method. so far the snow fence seems to work.

our thoughts were that freezing solid might cause issues we hadn't even thought of. so we decided on 53 degrees.

I read the comments on the new workouts. sounds like the wrist issue is a problem for others too.

Valerie, that is great that you can monitor the snow drift problem. I hope the fence continues to do it's job. I did really feel that bonus ab workout in my mid section, but it is one that I will not be doing too often unless I find some other modifiers. Maybe longer time periods between doing it.

Carolyn, funny that you should mention the Low Impact series. That is exactly what I was thinking today. I had more shoulder issues with the Low Impact series than I had ever experienced when I used it as a rotation. I do better picking and choosing and using premixes from it. I think the hi lo standing workouts are easier on me than all of the down and up and swinging weights around. At least the cardio on the Fit Split does not have dumbbells used to increase the intensity. That is another thing that I am not real fond of when doing cardio. I would rather leave weights for the weight workouts.
