Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 11/26

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I took my friend to her treatment appointment.

Edited to fix: Not sure what I was thinking....I did Cathe Live Vertical Loading yesterday, 52 minutes, 234 calories.

Valerie, glad your ankle is ok. Yes, those Muscle Meltdowns really get to you. I used to need glasses for distance, and could read any print...now my distance vision is 20/20...and I need glasses to read...go figure!

Carolyn, good job on that Peak Fit workout! I found the stride length adjustment on my FitBit, but left it as "auto adjust". I think I will stay with my Polar for calorie burn, since it is what I have used forever.

Judy, great that you are getting back to spinning, I know how much you enjoy it. The sleep analysis is what I like about the FitBit the best too.

Lori, I am glad the lavender oil helped. I think the fact that your arm with the watch is swinging is how it must count a "step". I haven't tried just holding my arms down and still and marching in place to see if they count....

Diane Sue, Great that you got your car back! :) Maybe a good thing for you to lighten up on workouts...give your body a rest. Especially if you are having a cold that will not go away. I really like the sleep info with the FitBit...something to work on to improve. At least it will show if any of the things I try are working.

A workout of some kind...not sure what. Follow up with my Gastro DR today, agility class with Kylee....

Take care,

Lori lavender is soapy smelling to me. I would taste soap all night. I enjoy cycling past a field of blooming lavender in summer, but it does not come into my house. I won't eat any food with lavender fragrance. I have become fragrance phobic as I get older. I can smell and taste things more than I was young. I stick to fragrance free as much as possible.
Deb it was a minor twist but made me skip going on and off the step. went away quickly.

Diane sue... agree with deb.. good to get your wheels back. Hopefully they fixed it! surely they had enough time.
I feel way too awful with a head cold to exercise. automatic time out for me. I get over colds fairly quickly if I go into hibernation mode, whereas if I have to stay active, the cold hangs on.

we are going to road ride today. thought about mt biking but it's been so wet and rainy, it feels wrong. the paved trail should be dry enough and we haven't ridden in weeks. we try to keep going all winter but not as often as other seasons
ETA we rode a short one, about 15 miles 1 hr 20. cold and damp, not ideal.

Today I did WS3 Cardio Step Jam. This was 32 minutes and 235 calories burned. Average heart rate was 129 and maximum heart rate 148. I liked this workout. It was a good cardio workout without any complicated choreography. She works both on and off the step for those who are ambivalent about Step. I also did Michelle Dozois’ Peak Fit Dynamic Flexibility. As with most of the Peak Fit workouts, you keep moving throughout. This one was 29 minutes, 100 calories, average heart rate 105 and maximum heart rate 129.

Deb, it’s funny that you forgot yesterday’s workout. I have done Live Vertical Loading and I liked it.

Diane Sue, so glad that you have your car back. It’s always more comfortable in your own vehicle. I never record the steps from my workouts. I try to get 10,000 steps every day and I look at the steps to see how the workout contributed to my total, but I don’t write it in my book.

Judy, I can’t imagine spinning for 90 minutes. Great job!

Lori, I’m with Judy—skip the Foundations from WS3. Someone on another forum said it was good for a 90 year old!

Valerie, I hope you get your ride in today.

Have a great day.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was WS3 Barefoot Cardio Core and I loved it. I wore 1lb weighted gloves and my 1.5lb ankle weights and really felt my core working throughout. It was not a huge calorie burner 33 mins /203 cal. But a good core workout for me, as you know, I hardly enjoy a core workout. Tonight I did 2 quick bellicon workouts for 44 mins / 292 cal.

Diane Sue..yeah!!! You have your car! Crazy how long they had it. Hope all is fixed now and it is behind you. I feel they same way about deadlifts on platform. Never really got this. I would just follow along. I too never thought I would change my workout routines. I loved my high impact and heavy weights. It just sort of happened for me and I did not notice till one day I think Deb mentioned I do more SB for lower than anything else. I had to think about this then realized, yup I do. I feel Barre is extremely challenging, yet gentle on the joints.

Valerie...you are the first person I know of that is similar to me with eye sight! Good to know I am not alone!!! Nice with a 30 min spin. I have a gel pad I bought to go on my seat. I need that extra padding. :) I do like the lavendar oil smell. I bought some on amazon that I miz a few drops with water. It is very mild and not overpowering at all to me.

Deb...that is so funny. Sometimes I completely forget that I worked out! I need to research how the apple watch calcluates steps. It has gps so I thought this is how it did it.

Carolyn...so far I am loving WS3. Lol! About the Foundations workout. I agree!!!!

Hi Judy!!

Today's workout was Ripped with Hiit Circuit Upper with abs no blasts, 54 minutes, 119 average heart rate, 159 max heart rate, 303 calories, 1,561 steps. I then did Kelly Coffey Muscle Up Chest and Back premix skipping the warm up, 15 minutes, 65 calories, heart rate average 108, max 125. Total time 69 minutes, 371 calories.
weights for muscle up
Rows 25 , 30,30 dbs superset with bench press 15, 20,20 dbs
lawnmowers 30,30,30 db superset with flies 15, 20, 20 dbs
pull overs 30,30 db superset with push ups 2 sets of each
I started to post earlier today and somehow got distracted and never got back here. Today was family dinner and I had my younger daughter and grandchildren here.

Deb, I find it interesting when I do a workout that originally was added to My Fitness Pal after using the Polar and seeing what the difference is with the Fit Bit. Good luck with the follow up with the gastro doctor. You haven't mentioned it for awhile, are you doing better?? My energy level has been kind of low and the desire for lots of cardio is not there. Hopefully I kick this cold.

Valerie, I am hopeful that my car is fixed. I will be out in it Friday for sure. It started right up when we drove it home. They told me that they decided to keep it a couple of days after replacing the security module to make sure it was working. It rained here quite a lot last night so it was wet today.

Carolyn, I did not check the steps on the workouts when I first started using the Fit Bit. I just kind of like writing it down so I can go back and remind myself which workouts get the most steps. I don't really worry about the steps though. Funny thing is, one night I got in bed and looked at my Fit Bit and I had 30 steps to get 10000. I got out of bed and got the 30 steps. Maybe that would be a bit OCD. I just couldn't let it go. Then again a lot of days I do not get 10,000 steps.

Lori, I like a little Ylang Ylang for a relaxing scent. It mixes well with some other florals as well. I have put some lavender oil on the bottoms of my feet when I went to bed. I would get a whiff when I move around. Sometimes lavender oil is a soft smell and others it can be really strong. Diluted it is nice. I have always thought that floor work for the hips and glutes really did help with definition. Later I discovered standing work with ankle weights really helped define the area as well. Granted it does not burn a lot of calories, but it really works. It was that type of work with my first pair of ankle weights that me noticing the effects were great.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live Barbell Upper Body, 43 minutes, 187 calories.

Valerie, nice that you were able to get a ride in....It would be nice if we could ride in November...:). We do see some people on bikes now, but they are commuting...not for pleasure that's for sue.

Carolyn, great workouts! I don't record the steps from my workouts either....yesterdays was around 1000. I know that is strange, since with that weight workout, all I do is take a couple of steps to pick up a weight. It has to be all the arm movements that it is recording. I guess the important piece is that you are moving.

Lori, glad the lavender helps you sleep. I really like it too. I find it relaxing. I agree that barre is challenging....hurts like crazy....LOL...:)

Diane Sue, good workouts! even with low energy you are still getting good workouts in. Yes, I have been doing quite a lot better. The "reflux" has almost gone, now I only experience it like most people do...if I have eaten something that triggers it. Also, have been med free from C-Diff for 31 days...the doctor says that he is pretty sure that this time it has gone. I would do the same thing if I needed only 30 steps to reach the 10,000...:). I only reached it once so far, that was the day I did the treadmill workout, but have gotten up to 8500. I think doing floor work with ankle weights is one of the hardest things to do...that is probably why it works...LOL...

Hi to Judy!

Take care,

Deb, that is great that you are doing so well. Quite often I get the notification that I only have 2,000 plus steps left to go around bed time. That is when I do not go for it :) Yes, weighted floor work is hard and I would imagine that is the reason some do not like doing it.

I am going to try a Tracey Long Longevity workout that I picked up at the library. It is a metabolic workout and uses a med ball for some of it. I could not find reviews on this one at Video Fitness so it will just be a see if I like it workout.

Today was Peak Fit Cardio Strength for 58 minutes and 375 calories burned. My average heart rate was 127 and maximum heart rate 160. Michelle uses a set of light weights and a set of heavy weights. I used 5# for my light and 10# for heavy weights. I had other weights available but I stayed with these lighter weights because of the speed of transitions in this workout. She goes quickly from a lower body move to something overhead and I wanted to be careful with my shoulders. Overall, I liked the workout, but there are other metabolic workouts that I like better.

Deb, that’s good news on your health.

Good workouts everyone. Enjoy your day.

This morning's workout was Tracey Long Longevity Staying Power, 54 minutes, 349 caloires, 2,669 steps, heart rate average, 123, max 162. I liked it, but think I was huffing and puffing way more than I normally would without the cold. I used a 5# soft med ball for the med ball segments and 8-10 pound dumbbells for the weights. I used a 12# for one segment. She hits everything nicely in this.

Carolyn, I have never done one of the Peak Fit workouts. I know lots of women seem to like them. Some metabolic workouts are more pleasant to do than others. I think the one I did today was well balanced on body parts. So many hit the shoulders a lot to get the heart rate up with the lower. I wish they did not do that.

I agree Deb. reassuring that GI issues are under control now. The Ina garden nut mix I was raving about.. DH ate a little but says it gives him heartburn. there is only a little left so it's all mine! I dole it out with only a tiny piece each day.

We ride when conditions aren't great. I get tired of only indoor. November is probably the worst month for weather here. rain constantly. so if it's not raining, we dress for cold damp conditions and go anyway. It takes some experimenting to find clothing that works. I see people wearing puffies, jackets and vests, but I overheat, perspire, so not good for longer periods of exercise. I have a Patagonia baselayer hoodie that is the best! the hood fits well, covers my ears without bulk, and it zips up under my chin. it is perfect for riding. a helmet goes over it easily. it's not bulky so unzip or get out of the hood without a ton of fabric all over the place. as long as it's not icy, riding is manageable. a little snowy- icy is OK on a mt bike but not a road bike. only serious riders and walkers so it's nice and uncrowded. Hiking is not great now because of the wetness and all the rain took down a lot of the snow pack. we can probably ski or snowshoe next week after there's some fresh stuff.

I will put in a link to the hoodie later. DH and I both have 2 now, one for here and one for MT. I thought it was expensive at first glance, but I have worn it so much the "cost per wearing" must be about a nickel by now. Dressing properly for bad weather conditions makes it much more enjoyable .
ETA http://www.patagonia.com/product/womens-capilene-thermal-weight-zip-neck-hoody/43672.html it is a close to the body fit so go up in size. the greatest material. I can wear it all day and stay warm and dry. it is a baselayer so I wear something over it. Layers are the best way to dress for outdoor activity where conditions change. I usually don't like things to fit this closely. I'm chunkier than I used to be. there's been a lot of emphasis on merino wool for years but my skin and wool are not happy together.

the step count is the one reason I might like a Fitbit. if I were 30 steps short, I'd probably walk to the kitchen or bathroom just to reach 10000. I used to have a plain pedometer, actually tried several but never worked right. finally got tossed. I tried attaching it every possible place but it would not stay on and didn't count half of what I did. made me suspicious of new devices. the first generation of Fitbit devices didn't fare too well in reviews.

Carolyn you are wise to be cautious. When things move quickly I worry about tweaking something so I might go a bit lighter, or slow down the DVD. my player has a setting that slows play speed to 80%. it's perfect for a new routine you are not sure about or if you feel the speed could make you use form. I always opt for good form instead of speed. my shoulders are back to normal and I want them to stay that way.

I have tried weighted floor work more than once, barre and all but I can't stick with it. mainly, I don't enjoy it.

Valerie, maybe something like that would work fr me on the motorcycle when it is cool. I would put a jacket over and the helmet over the hoodie. The thing is, even my Harley Leather Jacket seems to allow some cold air up under my sleeves and down the neck . I get cold on the motorcycle unless it is 70 plus outside. Particularly on the highways. My sleeves zip and it has a high neck where it can be snapped. I cannot handle any wool. I have a couple of Victoria Secret sweaters that have some nylon with the wool . but I can only tolerate for a little while with a tank top under them. When I was little my parents got a great deal on some virgin wool sweaters when visiting Ipswich. I broke out in a rash and could not stand them. They made military wool blankets into quilts with the quilting material on the outside and I swear I could feel the wool inside.
Most pedometers will add steps with you just sitting down and shaking them.

diane sue I like this garment because I can zip it up to my chin, and the hood fits close and covers my ears. it doesn't mess with the helmet fit. I slide sunglasses under it. It's warm enough for me on a bicycle but the wind chill at 15-20 mph is a lot less than on a motorcycle. I tried ear bands, ear muffs, a skull cap style hat, scarves, and this hood works by far the best for me. DH likes it too. many hoods are not designed right and fall backwards off your head and leave ears exposed. my ears are my sensitive spot and if they are cold, I'm unhappy. when I warm up, I unzip ( it's a quarter zip) or pull the hood off, and it's not too bulky. it has thumb loops to keep the sleeves down. the material on the inside has thin rows of furry material with open spaces between. looks a little like an old pipe cleaners. it is usually $119 but the blue color was on sale for $73. I could not resist! you're smaller than me. I have a large. it has a slim fit, and is fitted on me. I wear it as a baselayer with a layer over. the material is smooth enough to layer on without much sticking. long enough to tuck in pants.

I don't like wool this is easy care, synthetic. machine wash/dry delicate. air dries quickly too. I wear it for hiking and snowshoeing in cool weather. It is my go-to l first layer much of the year. we joke about being buried in one!

I did Total body metabolic this morning. I haven't done it in a while so I went with less weight. 5, 8, 10. I think I will do this one for a few repeats until I can do it again with heavier weights.

Good evening ladies,

No workout this morning really wasn’t feeling it plus my kitty was snuggled up in my lap and I did not want to disturb her. lol! TimTim has been sort since we lost Zelda so we try and give her love and attention as much and as often as we can. This was one of those times. :) Tonight was WS3 Total Body. I used 12, 15 and 20 lb dumbbells. Loved this one too. So far 3 for 3! I followed up with a Bellicon Bounce. Total time was 50 mins and 300 cal.

Diane Sue...agree standing work has been amazing for me. Which is why I love Barre so much. Fit Split may be the last set I buy from Cathe. I just never do her dvds enough anymore. (I do like the Fit Tower ones though). As I mentioned the other day my style of workout has completely changed the past few years.

Deb...I love the burn I get from Barre! When we were in Florida last week we rode a bike trail along the beach and went about 12 miles. We loved it and wish we could ride like this in November in New England. Would never happen. Great workout this morning. So glad you are feeling better!

Valerie...I loved the blue color! I do the same thing...an item may be expensive but if you love it and wear it all the time the cost per use can be pennies! :). I can not wear anything wool. I itch like crazy. Especially around the throat. Nice workout even with lighter weights!

Carolyn...I do not remember that specific peak fit workout. Will need to check it out.

Hi Judy!!!!!

Good morning,

Yesterday I did an iTread workout..34 minutes 215 calories. Not a huge calorie burn...but I did over 11,000 steps yesterday. :). Also 12 flights of stairs which earned a star....:)...

Diane Sue, I remember that the Tracey Long workout she did for The Firm was a favorite of mine at the time. I also may be interested in the hoodie that Valerie posted for walking the dogs when it is colder.

Carolyn, those workouts sound interesting.

Valerie, that hoodie looks interesting...if it does what you say, it would be well worth the cost. John has a few Patagonia things for fly fishing. I enjoy the FitBit for the steps and sleep analysis. It is really easy to get 100 steps in....like you said, a couple trips back and forth in the house will do it. I wore it a couple of times on the treadmill and compared the heart rate etc with the Polar HRM while I was on it and they were way off from each other. I believe the Polar was more accurate, so I don't record the calories from the FitBit.

Lori, if you have to make a choice between a workout and comforting a pet....I agree with your choice!

Hi Judy!

A workout, then meeting a friend from work for lunch....

Any plans for the weekend?

Take care,

DH and I both love this hoodie. Garments that work fine for “sitting still” like at a stadium don’t work for vigorous activity. I need coverage for my ears, neck and head. If my ears are cold, I am COLD. A down jacket gets your torso too warm and sweaty while your ears freeze. the goal should be warm, but not sweating. When we stop to rest or eat, then we pull out the puffy jacket. When we are riding or hiking, we wear surprisingly light looking clothes but are comfortable. The hoodie fabric wicks moisture and keeps your skin dry. I wear a medium synthetic shirt over the hoodie and then a wind bLock layer over that, like an uninsulated goretex shell.
There is a science to wearing the right clothing for the activity so you are comfy warm and dry and are able to adjust layers if conditions change.
anyway, I like this hoodie enough ..it is my third one. I watch for a sale! I left one in Montana and will have 2 here. I especially like that the hood fits... it stays in place but can be zipped up tight to prevent heat loss from the neck area. I like hoodies but not many stay in place without a lot of constant readjusting.

Today I did SB intermediate Lower Body Bounce from her streaming site. That was 19 minutes, 65 calories, average heart rate 102 and maximum heart rate 151. After that I did Jessica Smith’s WS3 Pilates and Yoga. That was 31 minutes, 82 calories, average heart rate 98 and maximum heart rate 133. I will need to do something else later to get in more steps for the day.

Deb, the Peak Fit workouts are good and are mostly metabolic in nature. Michelle does a lot of high impact cardio that is easily modified to low. Jengolf has a thorough review of the workouts on her blog 2lazy4thegym. She has detailed descriptions of each workout in the series. She has an amazing amount of information on her blog, including many Cathe Live workouts.

Valerie, I might look at that hoodie for my daughter. She is a runner and wants something that will keep her warm without adding weight or making her too hot.

Hi to Diane Sue, Judy, and Lori.

No workout today. I got up early and went to our church to wrap presents for the school store items the children purchased. That took till lunch time. I am still battling this sinus and head cold. I came home and ate lunch and took a short nap. I need to do catch up here and I have to get the other sleeve altered on my grandson's suit jacket. I just do not feel a workout today. Maybe tomorrow. I have another Tracey Long that I got from the library that appears to be lower body with some body weight lower work mixed in. I may try it then. I have not had time to preview. I need to search for ideas for my 17 year old granddaughter for Christmas. A lot of the time I try to pick her up something she has on her pinterest page. I am just having some problems finding the right thing this time. She loves some Bath and Body Works body spray I have and uses it when she is here so I ordered some of it with the shower gel and lotion today. They had them online for 5.00 each as they are to be retired scents. I have some Jewelry ideas she has on pinterest, but many are no longer available. We draw names every year for the grandchildren/children. We have two grandchildren. Our grandchildren are growing up. We have 3 working adult grandchildren now and a soon to be married granddaughter. We are going to have to come up with another plan next year. There will only be 3 young ones left.

Lori, does Jessica Smith use 20# dumbbells? She doesn't have the physique that looks like someone who lifts that heavy. Just curious, she may just be one of those people that do not build muscle easily.

Deb, I always found Tracey Long as one of the Firms that I wanted to do the most often. She had the Tortoise and Hare one that was kind of fun. I think they may have changed the name after I purchased them. You got a lot of steps in. I average around 14 floors on most days unless I have grandchildren or am cleaning.

Valerie, I think that layering is always a good idea, so you can remove something if not needed. That hoodie sounds great. I watch for sales for those kinds of items too.

Carolyn, I have never done any of the peak fit workouts, but it was always my understanding that they were high impact.

Diane Sue, the Peak Fit Cardio is a lot of high impact but the moves are similar to those in her Rockin Body Cardio Jam that has a modifier. They are very easy to modify without changing the workout. I hope you feel better soon.

Good evening ladies,

No workout this morning. I had an early morning Drs appt. was planning to workout out tonight but my little Nilla is not feeling well. My son called me at work (he was home early today) to let me know she had made a complete mess of the bathroom with runny bowel movements. He cleaned up and gave her a bath which was sweet. I came home to find the same thing. She has a doctors appt in the morning. Not sure what will happen. I do not remember if I mentioned we had a close call a few months ago. I think it was around the same time Deb’s doggies were attacked by the neighbors dog. She was acting really odd and they thought she had a stroke and they told me to prepare myself. She bounced back and has been doing well but we can see the decline. She is exactly 17 1/2 years old. She is in my arms right now and I am trying hard to prepare myself. We will see tomorrow. :(

Deb...nice job on the steps!!!

Diane Sue...she does not use 20lbs but in the beginning of this workout it mentions heavy weight up to 20lbs so I had it handy just in case and glad I did. I can’t imagine what to buy a 17 year old. This year is pretty easy for us with gifts. My husband and I are not exchanging gifts since we are planning our movie theater downstairs. My son has already has his wish list on amazon and I took care of. We just need to buy for his GF and my inlaws...that is it! So easy this year.

Carolyn...did you sign up for SB streaming? I enjoy that bounce and have done it many times. Yes I agree the Peak Fits are easy to modify.

Hi to Valerie and Judy!

Lori, yes I did sign up for SB streaming. I decided that I use it enough to justify the expense but I’ll see if that is true. As you have mentioned, her workouts are short enough to add to something else.
