Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/29

Lori-I got the space grey case with the black sport band. It will be here tomorrow. I can't wait! I set my old Apple watch up for Chris but he's really not that interested in it. He hasn't even worn it yet, it's just sitting on the charger.
I was looking at the rebounders on Amazon today. It's really tempting to just order one. I know I would like it.

Judy...I gave my old watch to Chelsie my son's GF. She never wore it so she gave it back to me. I recently traded it in on Amazon for $121. I was happy with that. If you get a Jumpsport I recommend getting at least a 350 or above. Little more sturdier and you can adjust the tension. I used to love to run on my TM and this has been a wonderful substitute.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, maybe today. We did get a lot of errands done, and went out for lunch.

Diane Sue, I know any really good yogurt is very expensive. Have you seen "Siggi's" brand? That is the one the Nourishing Guru's recommend. Bee pollen helps with allergies?

Valerie, this may be a stupid question, but when you grow corn, what do you use for seeds? How do you make sure you are not getting the same stuff that farmer's are using...like you said, the ones that are "round-up ready"?

Carolyn, great that you were able to keep to your regular schedule and get that workout in. I didn't know that there was such a premix for Cardio Slam. Good to know.

Judy, like everyone else, how do you use the Hex Bar? It looks like it would work well for plie squats instead of a straight bar.

Lori, you have to post some new pics of Gigi when you pick her up...I bet she has grown a lot in the last couple weeks.

Making the dog's food today, not much else up here. Any plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Hi Everyone,
Yesterday I did Ramped Up Upper Body. I went light, especially on shoulders. I wish I could have gone heavier but I didn't aggravate anything so that's good. I might do another light upper body workout this weekend.
It is so cold here this morning. I'm staying home because I have to sign for the Apple watch. I'll probably do a Spinerval or JS walk workout in the living room so I can watch for UPS.

Deb-I've tried Siggi's brand. It seems like a good one. When I worked at the health food store we sold bee pollen. I never tried it because my pollen allergies are so bad I was afraid I would have a reaction to it.

Lori-Thanks for the Amazon tip! I'm going to trade my old iPhone 5s in for $93. Also, the Jumpsport 350 has a 15% off coupon so I will probably order it this weekend. I need to run it by Chris first, but I'm pretty sure he will be ok with it. I have room in my gym and it doesn't look like it will take up that much space.

Diane Sue- I love Greek yogurt too. Grassfed and organic is the best. It's hard for me to eliminate dairy, but I need to cut back more since I'm sure it's not helping my cholesterol.

Carolyn-Ab Circuits is another one that I like. I love the medicine ball abs segment on that one.

I should be getting my workout in . I have an appointment for Gertie shots and I think I will have him clip her nails. I doubt that does much. She is over here gnawing on them now. She will probably come back and do it anyway.

Deb, I habe read that bee pollen started a few weeks before allergy season helps build up a resistance to the allergies. My aunt that keeps bees swears it works. I should have started earlier, I didn't know we were going to be experiencing cedar pollen this soon. I use unfiltered raw honey all of the time. Anyway, I thought it was worth a try. They say you should get the pollen from bees that are near your local area where the same types of plant pollens are harvested by the bees for the best results,

Judy, bee pollen can cause a reaction in a few people. I think it is rare though. I read one article that said to touch a little to you r tongue and wait a bit. If you feel any reaction on the lips or tongue then do not use it. I have used a little from the grocery store before but I was in the middle of the season. My allergies are bad. Since the unfiltered honey doesn't bother I think I am safe on that. They say to start with smaller doses and build up. My mother used to eat it right off a spoon. I would be more prone to add it to something else.

deb we get our seed from smaller seed suppliers. there are national ones, like Burpee too. our climate is different from a lot of the country. small suppliers usually have seed appropriate for where you live. we have a short cool growing season so things that grow well in California or Georgia don't grow well here.
we are finding it harder to get corn that is not sugar enhanced. we like older varieties that don't have the genetic tinkering, mostly because it tastes like corn. the sugar enhanced stuff is too sweet. none of the seeds we get are 'roundup ready". I think it's only available to large commercial operations, but honestly never looked for it. I don't know how corn was grown before, as we always get gigantic weeds growing in with the corn, and when you hand pull them it loosens the soil and the corn plants can blow over if it's windy.
Farmers used to be able to save seed to plant the next year, but some companies like Monsanto don't allow that anymore. they make them buy new seed every year. at least for certain crops, like soybeans.
we grow Early Girl tomatoes, the only ones that reliably grow here. getting seed is hard some years. not sure why, except that in warmer climates other tomatoes might be more popular. for us, it's the only tomato that produces well except for cherry tomatoes. same with some types of broccoli too. if demand for a particular crop drops, then seed growers may stop producing it. a crop has to be grown in relative isolation for the seeds to be 'true" the next season. cross pollination happens between similar plants, so squashes and pumpkins can cross pollinate. what you grow one year is fine, but the seeds from those plants may not turn out the same the next year if the flowers were pollinated by another variety because the bee visited another variety. .

we have massive cedar pollen blooms here, so large that we can see yellow clouds blowing off the trees. they say it is non allergenic because the grains are too big. maybe you are dealing with a different kind of cedar

I tried siggis yogurt once.... pretty tart/sour. I thought it was close to inedible. I don't eat much yogurt by itself but use some plain greek non fat for baking, cooking. for eating plain, it has to be sweeter than siggis.

ETA judy, thanks for the link. I had no idea how that device worked!.

Today I had a lot of interruptions through my workout. I did get it done though. I have to leave in a few minutes with Gertie. It takes a bit to get to her vet since we have used the same one for years and he is in another connecting city. My workout was Ice Low Impact Sweat Mish Mosh premix, step with blizzard blast mixed in, 38 minutes, 277 calories. I then did Strong and Sweaty Ramped Up upper Triceps 3 times mix, 31 minutes, 108 calories. Total time 69 minutes 409 calories. I wanted to use that SB free barre and step try out and set up another password. Then I couldn't get it to play. That was a bit of an annoyance. Then my laptop decided it needed an update for Silverlight and to restart. I finally just left the laptop alone and went on with my workout. Then packages were delivered which took up time. I had planned on doing on of the Kelly Coffey Amped up Cardio workouts after the Ice workout but gave up because of time. Maybe I will do that workout tomorrow, depending if I have grandchildren here and how it goes.

Valerie, Monsanto is such a big money making uncaring monster. Making them buy new seed every year is part of what is wrong with things. So many things just get out of control. My daughter left her garden through the winter last year and when they went out to clean up they had vegetables popping back up. When I grow tomatoes and peppers I just usually buy the plants. I never have much luck starting them indoors and putting them out. I can only grow a small amount of stuff in our tiny yard now and no luck last year with it. Our drainage is bad. The upper yard tends to hold water and grow mold and the rest has run off that I have put up a bit of a barrier for because the water just ran under the fence and out. I have put top soil and peat and grass seed out repeatedly just to get a little bit of lawn going. It needs a major over haul with the landscaping. That and a new fence.

I have purchased Siggis brand of yoga and kefir. I like Wallaby for the Kefir. It is a bit milder and thicker. I used to eat this with homemade granola and on oatmeal. Now I just use it with protein powder and fruits, some nuts, or whatever topping I want. Extra Dark Chocolate Chips !!:p That is a weakness I should get rid of. I only like the really dark almost bitter chocolate though. I like the Grass Milk products for taste but they seem a little thin. Probably just something left out of their formula that is extra. Like when they use Xanthum gum to make protein shakes feel creamier and thicker.
I need to go get Gertie outside so we can go. I will check back later.

Today I did a PHA Training timesaver premix that omits round 2c. I really like that workout. I feel like my upper body had gotten stronger doing this rotation which has quite a bit of upper body work included.

I went to Sprouts and The Fresh Market after my workout to get organic vegetables and chicken. We were running out of many things. I buy Siggis yogurt sometimes and it is definitely more tart. The flavored varieties have less sugar than other brands. My husband eats a small yogurt for his morning snack every day and I try to get him to eat a less sugary version when I can. He prefers the other brands. I add berries, hemp seeds, and maple syrup to my plain yogurt if I have it for breakfast, but I don't have it often because I am trying to cut back on dairy.

Diane Sue, I like to read about food and nutrition also. I have marked some websites and blogs that I liked, but have not looked at them in a while. I hope your allergies get better.

I was away for a week, and I found the battery for my scale, and I weigh about 112, so it isn't so bad. I am going to resume cardio slowly, and today I just did my lower body. I want to go to Confession and Mass tomorrow at the church where I now live.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, went to my friends for a visit. She hurt her foot and is having trouble walking, so I went there instead of meeting her somewhere for tea.

Judy, I would stay home too if something like the Apple watch was being delivered. I wouldn't want them to leave a note and have to go pick it up somewhere, or wait another day.

Diane Sue, did you get Gertie to the vet and have her nails done? Keegan always starts chewing his nails when they need trimming.

Valerie, I still wonder if any seeds that are now produced and sold by companies like Burpees are not in some way altered. I guess we can't know for sure. I like that Siggi's has decent flavored Greek style yogurt with low sugar.

Carolyn, I never thought to put maple syrup in plain yogurt....( pure maple syrup of course!)...:)

Caitlin, good that you found that battery! is 112 normal for you?

Agility class this morning, then mostly HouseMax for me this weekend...

Take care,

Deb it gets complicated since people have been tinkering with plant genetics for thousands of years by selective crossing to get desirable traits. I start having issues when genes from a fish or is spliced into a plant product. I'm not sure how the 'super sweet" corn varieties are produced but I don't like the flavor at all. clearly farmers and retailers like them because it's impossible to buy fresh corn anymore that isn't a super sweet variety. you can still get frozen and canned corn that still tastes like corn but 'sugar enhanced" canned and frozen are now showing up. we can still get traditional seeds but some varieties we used to grow have disappeared. we have a short cool growing season so we can't grow every kind.

I did Ramped upper body premix yesterday for 40 min. it was my weigh in day. thought for sure I'd made progress, but no same to the tenth of a pound. ate a lot of fish this week too. been right about 30 points every day but no progress. I like that workout . supersets are hard but I like that approach.

I don't think there is a particle of difference between maple syrup, honey, or plain old white sugar. your body metabolizes them all as sugar. the main difference IMO is that the taste and consistency of honey, agave, maple syrup limits how much gets used, whereas sugar incorporates into so many things easily that the quantity used gets too high. and it's a cheap filler. like high fructose corn syrup that expands product volume at little cost. people get used to sweeter and sweeter things and then if something is NOT real sweet, they don't like it. I don't use much of any of them. I love the flavor of honey and maple syrup but they are caloric.

Today my workout was Low Impact Step, a real oldie. It's one of Cathe's easier beginner/intermediate step workouts. We went shopping for a new mattress this morning. It took longer than I had anticipated and we spent more money than I had anticipated! I think it will be worth it in the end.

Valerie, you are right, sugar is sugar and they all have calories. I do use some mostly in my oatmeal or yogurt, but I prefer the more natural and less processed types. It's great that you don't use them since that is a healthier choice.

I looked at the February rotation but I haven't decided if I want to do that one. Some of my favorite older workouts are included.

Wishing everyone a good day.

Carolyn I fell for the hype back in the '70s that honey was "natural" and therefore I could eat a lot of it. Wrong!. it tastes great. I like it a lot. but to keep the pounds off, it works just like white sugar. or brown sugar. it doesn't incorporate into a lot of processed food as well, and of course it's more expensive. so manufacturers use regular sugar. so to me, if the yogurt is so sour you have to add sweetener, it doesn't matter if you add it, or if the company added it. I use minimal honey, maple syrup, agave because of calories. I use a little in salad dressing where it adds a lot of flavor and helps the texture.
ETA I would love honey on my oatmeal... but I'll use too much! brown sugar sprinkles over the whole surface and I don't over do. I don't use artificial ones , don't like the taste. the latest one..can't think of what it's called... I can't taste it at all. nothing.

Today I did Kelly Coffey Amped Up Cardio both combined workouts, 56 minutes, 380 calories. I always have fun with this. I usually use weighted glove,s but since I am still working into things I did not use them yet. I then did Strong and Sweaty Total Body Giant sets timesaver #1 lower body only, no warm up, 27 minutes, 140 calories.. This was 83 minutes, 520 calories. I also did the relaxation stretch from SB Barre Amped Strength and Stretch.

Deb, I hope your friend's foot is not hurt too badly. Yes, Gertie got her claws clipped. She hated it. There were 3 of us trying to get her still to do the job. Funny, I get her to relax and lay her head down while I mess with her paws and she is fine I make this a daily habit. . Once in awhile I will clip one or two. She was fine till she heard the snip sound. Then she was trying to get up and go behind me. It was not pleasant. She settled when the back ones were done. One lady was hugging her and patting her and the other came in from behind while she was sitting and nipped the back tips without lifting her paws off the floor. The usual vet did not come in. He has trimmed her claws and there was not issue. There was a new young woman that saw her.

Valerie, I always buy organic frozen corn even though I rarely eat any of it. Once in awhile a recipe comes up that calls for some and I am making it for family. That is when I eat some corn. My husband likes corn.
I think that there is some differences natural sugars like honey, black strap molasses, pure maple syrup and coconut sugar. Some of them require less to get the sweetness. There is nutrients left in them if they are not over processed and some have a lower glycemic index. That being said, they all are sugar calories same as lactose in dairy. A calorie is a calorie and sugars are high in calories. Mix sugars and fats and your body loves to turn it into fat. Some of the stricter paleo programs like Whole 30 do not allow any sweeteners including the natural ones. That alone would probably enhance health . I use quite a bit of honey. It does not affect my weight unless I am consuming a lot of nuts and dishes that use coconut and almond flour or nut butters. Then I gain weight.

Carolyn, I have not done that workout in ages. It is probably one I could have used while recovering. I would like a new mattress. Ours is not terribly old though. Ones I have looked at and thought that I would like to try are way up there in price. I liked the queen one we gave our granddaughter when we moved. I used to take a nap on it. It was so comfy. Now I wish I would have kept the other and put it upstairs. It might have gave me less workout space though. Or I would have to be in the loft room with no sound barrier for what goes on downstairs. My husband is happy with ours with the memory foam on top of it.

and cause weight loss.

Since I have muscle, I am usually closer to 120, as muscle weighs more than fat. I was going to do some cardio today, but I let Frank sleep too long. I don't know how to use his system, so I did bis, tris and back with High Reps. I am just glad I don't have hanging triceps at my age. I always do my own rotation, I must have said this before, but my doctor told me never to do chest or shoulders. For a short woman, I am top heavy, and hence the Enell bras when I do impact. I have to travel again on Tuesday. Hello to all the wonderful ladies. Frank likes me to take Sunday off, but I don't want to.

Good evening ladies!

Yesterday morning was SB's Inner Thighs, 18m followed up with one of her bounce streaming workouts. Total time was 37 mins. Today was Cathe Live Cardio Boxing, first 30 minutes only I stopped at the hiit and weight sections. I then did a compilation of "electric" power jump mix that I made up for another 33 minutes. Total calories for both came to exactly 600! Loved this. :)

We picked GiGi up today!!!! It was so hard at first as we had to somewhat not acknowledge her until the trainer said to. Was amazing to see him and her in action. We stayed with him for about 90 minutes going over instructions and walking around with her on the lead. She will be a work in progress but she is off to a great start.

Deb...hope it is nothing serious with your friends foot. I'll post some pictures of GiGi sometime this weekend once I sign on to my computer.

Judy...yeah your watch came today! Very nice. Great selling your phone too. :) Did you order the Jumpsport? That is a really great price with the 15% off. You will love it. Did you order the bar also? I think it is $80. If you did not the Fit Tower works well as a substitute for SB providing you put some heavy dumbbells on both sides. If I was not constantly needing to bring mine upstairs I would have never ordered the bar. You should try out the power jump workouts too. You will never care to run again!

Carolyn...you did really well with the S&S rotation. Kudos to you! I will try that premix of PHA...that will allow me time to add on a SB. Low Impact Step is older. I need to look that one up just to remind me which one it was. We will be a needing a new mattress at some point. We extended the life by buying a 3 inch memory foam and we love it. It was not cheap but it is working for us right now as we are both really comfy.

Diane Sue...what a fustrating start and finish to a workout. Drives me crazy when waiting on updates! I completely forgot about KCM's Amped Up Cardio. I really like that one. Will add it in this week. I was able to use my apple watch wearing my boxing gloves. I did not realize I could switch the orientation so the crown is not on the side at my wrist. Buy switching it around the crown is not hitting the glove and causing havoc! Even while punching my bag. I was very happy woth this since I did not hve to cut my glove afterall!

Valerie...amazing all the info on seeds. Crazy how the next year may be different. Never knew that. I used to think natural was better when it comes to sugar but no...sugar is sugar and I try and keep mine at bay. Do you think your weight not changing is due to muscle? You have been really getting back to weighted workouts.

Caitlin...good that you are introducing cardio slowly.

Have a great night all!

Lorie, nice calorie burn today. That is interesting about switching the orientation of the Apple watch. I am not sure., are you saying you turn it to the side of the wrist? Which way is the read out facing? I just know the Fit Bit said for things like boxing to wear it 3 fingers up from the wrist bone. It is hard to keep it there though even at the tightest setting. The gloves set off the touch screen. I read someone talking about wearing their Fit Bit on their ankle. I cannot see how that would work at all.

Caitlin, 120 is not a bad weight. Chest gets worked with so many other moves. It is hard to find an isolation move for triceps that does not hit the chest some. You have to listen to your doctor.
