Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/29

"Chef salad". That is too funny! Probably iceberg with French dressing . Simpler times. I have always wondered how you get doggies to hold still for clipping . I would think they'd be squirming and backing away.
I love salads. I have one every night. getting away from bottled dressing opened the door for me. there is some ingredient in bottled dressing I can identify from 50 yards. not sure what it is, but I really dislike it. I've never had a bottled dressing that didn't have some taste or odor of it. I've been shaking up my own dressing now for ages. so easy and so much better.

We've ridden these trails many times. I know where it's steep.fun to ride down but too steep for me to get back up, especially if there is a turn right before a hill. I go up as far as I can, jump off and push up the rest. I'm a much stronger rider now and can ride probably 95 per cent of it. not "good" but better. Started at about 50 per cent so .....progress. I have a better bike now with better brakes and that makes me feel better about downhills. I don't usually "fall", a hurried dismount is more accurate.

Think its x train abs I do. Didn't like the ice one much. only did s&s once. too hard and too easy at the same time. need to try that one again. sometimes there are too many choices.

Today I did Ice Chiseled Lower Body, 48 minutes, 319 calories. I then did Total Body Giant Sets round 1 lower body and Ramped Up upper body back (no pullovers) and shoulders, and stretch 30 minutes, 147 calories. Total time was 78 minutes, 467 calories. I also did some of Yoga Tune Up upper body but didn't bother with it for time and calories. I just figured that I was going to need it. My arms are a little sore form Monday's workout. I think that I am going to like Strong and Sweaty Ramped Up Upper after trying some of it and viewing the moves. Next weight day I will try the arms from that one. I have a pork loin marinating that I need to get in the oven and potatoes to fix. I am undecided on a southwest salad or making a broccoli salad that I found. I would have to improvise on the dressing though because it calls for greek yogurt. I could use some sour cream. I could wait and save that for another day when I have time for the store. I have an appointment for Gertie's check and shots on Friday.

Deb, that chef salad sounds funny. It is funny how things change. Like Valerie said, probably French dressing or maybe I would thing thousand island. I haven't tasted either of those in years. I think we were rather limited on dressings back then. It was either that or the mayonnaise based cole slaw dressing. I am glad we have so many more choices for salads and dressings now. I didn't realize there was differences in clipping. I am not sure what striping is. I can sort of imagine. Years ago when our children were small we had a miniature Schnauzer named Waldo. We had someone come out with a mobile grooming unit that would trim her up. Yes, Waldo was a girl! Out dogs have tended to have odd names over the years. I wish out vets office would get Mudd off their records. They always ask which dog. Today she wanted to know if I was bringing both of the dogs in. I had said Gertie at the start of the conversation.

Valerie, I have seen them grooming dogs at Pets Mart and they have some sort of cords kind of holding them and two people, one doing the clipping. I would bet most of the dogs are pretty used to it and would not have so much anxiety. I tried using one of those electric claw trimmers that sand down the dog claws and none of my dogs were having any part of it. They would flee as soon as they saw it. When Gertie was a pup I would blow dry her coat part way so she wasn't so wet. She only was okay with it if I kept the dryer on low. I haven't done that in a long time. That first year was very cold and a lot of snow and I didn't want her going outside wet. She was kind of a pee pot for a lack of a better word. Outside a lot and would guzzle water to the point I would have to remove it at times and ration it. That was hard with two dogs in the house. I am guessing it had something to do with her being dumped out on the streets before we got her. It was like she was afraid the water was going to disappear.

I never got to my workout today. I had to go out first thing and planned to come back and work out, but someone was waiting here when I returned. After that and other interruptions I never got to my workout.

Valerie, you inspired me to work on my recipe collection. I try to keep them fairly organized so that my daughters can find the recipes that they really like. I have magazines saved that I need to take the recipes out and get rid of the magazine. I know exactly where to find my favorites but no one else would know.

I love salads too. I have one almost every day for lunch. I try to use different salad greens and some kind of seasonal fruit or roasted vegetables and a protein.

Have a good evening.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was SB Total Body Interval 32 min. I followed up with her Cardio Bounce from her dvd then did the first round of PHA Training. Hard to believe I am into the 3rd week of SB's Detox Rotation. I am liking the workouts she has selected for this rotations. Today's was harded than it looked which surprised me. No lunch workout today. Heavy package day at the office so we all got out upper body workout in.

Diane Sue...I like the firmer bounce for the Power Jump workouts and a little softer for SB and most others. Having two is working well for me. You can't be adjusting the firmness levels everyday as it takes a while. If Imonly had one than I would choose going firmer for all workouts. One of our female cats is named TimTim. She is my sons cat and he named her when he was about 13. So that explains it! You are doing really great with your workouts.

Deb...glad you saw my sense of humor about my mom calling. I have mentioned that at work before and sometimes I get odd stares!! Oh well. I bet Keegan looks beautiful!! We miss GiGi so much. She is doing so well with the trainer and now it will be up to us to continue. What is funny is Nilla and our 2 cats have been doing the Snoopy Happy Dance once they realized she was gone. They will be very sad when she walks in the door on Saturday for sure! Hilarios about the chef salad!

Valerie...I have to force my self to eat salads and I very rarely will make one. If they are loaded with garbage like cheese, meats, croutons, and other bad stuff then I would love it. At that point I might as well have a Big Mac!!! Years ago I suffered from Anorexia. I think I may have mentioned this at one point or another not sure. I lived on salads. Hospitalized and therapy the entire route. Was horrible and glad I was one of the lucky ones. But I think because of that I just can't enjoy salads.

No bouncing tonight. Had enough of a workout this morning!

Have a great night all!

Carolyn, when we did our last move I took recipes out of magazines and got rid of the magazines. Those are in a notebook. I really do not know why I held onto the magazines for so long. I also like to have some sort of protein with the salad at lunch. Sometimes it is just something made with protein powder if I do not have any protein left overs to use. I try to roast extra chicken when I cook it or extra Mexican taco meat recipe so I have some on hand.

Lorie , you are lucky to have two different rebounders. Having the softer one would be nice for the strength work. You are lucky that you got over the eating disorder, I could understand not wanting the salads. I guess I have always loved to eat too much. I grew up loving vegetables so it is just something I like to eat, but I eat other things and usually have something else with the salads unless they have a protein on them.

Diane Sue...meant to mention SB now has 5 bounce workouts on her streaming service. I love them all! Between these and her DVD I am very happy at the moment.

Hi Everyone,

Today I did Lift it Hiit it Legs. I did the premix that adds core sections throughout. It was very challenging but I enjoyed it. I used a 45 lb hex bar for squats, instead of dumbbells and I used a 30 lb dumbbell for the plie squats. I dropped down to 8-15 lb dumbbells for the rest. I did modify some of the core moves too, as I don't want to aggravate my neck.

Deb-We had more snow today and tonight. The roads are horrible here. Good that you got Keegan to the groomer. I bet he looks great!

Diane Sue-That salad recipe looks very good. I will have to try it. That's interesting what you mentioned about the Low Impact series and having more shoulder and elbow pain. I haven't done enough of those workouts to notice that but I will be aware if I do more of them. It makes sense that she was using more upper body work to increase the intensity of the workouts while making them easier on the lower body.

Lori-That's great that you are doing so well with SB's detox challenge. I should have done that. Seeing the bounce workouts that she has is really making me think about getting a rebounder. Maybe later this year. That's really funny about Nilla and the cats. They will be surprised to see Gigi on Saturday :)

Valerie-I agree on the ab workouts. I didn't like the ICE ones that much, but I love the XTrain ones. Yes, too many choices. I feel like I spend too much time trying to figure out what workout to do.

Did another mt bike today, mostly because it was sunny and cold, too cold for a road ride, and weather is supposed to crap out by Friday. anyway, 2 hours and about 7 miles. will do a hike tomorrow, nothing too hard, couple of miles of steep uphill and downhill but not a load of mileage. snow in mts is boilerplate.

wow, I am such a salad fiend. I don't even need a lot of dressing, but needs to be fresh not bottled. after that, anything goes except for dried cranberries. I don't like those! dried cherries are a good sub if you need a tart flavor. I use a few occasionally but not a favorite for me. any variety of ingredients on the salad . I need the fiber and without loads of fiber, no one is happy. all the chewing keeps me from over eating food, somewhat anyway. salads are a way for me to maintain........... don't really lose by eating them. Lori that is scary history. so glad you overcame that problem. lots of people don't have as good an outcome.

so silly, as I've done them dozens of times, but Core 1 and Core 2 are from x train think. those are the 2 I like best. I don't think they're easiest but no dread factor and I like exercises with more movement. get really sick of endless crunches or hip lifts that hold in one place and don't feel like accomplish much.

I rip the recipes out of magazines or newspaper, and usually run them thru the copier. then I stick them in sheet protectors. this is for tried and true. I don't 'sleeve" anything until it's been tested. I keep too many though. every now and then I go thru and weed out. too many in the "to try" file. I like the plastic to protect from water and spatter. you can sponge it off.

too funny, judy you are on watch #2 and I still haven't gotten a device to show my heart rate. maybe for my birthday next month.

Good morning,

Happy Ground Hog Day! No workout, just work! I also didn't go to the last class of the session last night, I was tired when I got home and just figured I would stay home.

Valerie, that was about it for the Chef Salad. :). I am pretty sure the dressing was just oil and vinegar. We never had bottled dressing when I was a kid. I don't think I tried anything else until I was older and went out to restaurants on my own. Dogs go on a grooming table for clipping or any other grooming. They are tethered with a collar so they are pretty much in one position. I do Kylee without the collar, she stays very well. Once they have been on the table, they are pretty much used to it.

Diane Sue, thanks for the recipe and the link! For another salad you mentioned, you said you would sub sour cream....do you not use Greek yogurt? Strange that the vet office would not have record of Mudd...I bet if you gave them a smart answer about it, they would change their records fast.

Lori, I bet Nilla and the cats sighed with relief; "glad Mom & Dad got rid of that pain"...won't they be surprised! I don;t think you ever mentioned Anorexia...sounds awful and you were very lucky to come through that. I can see why salads would not be something you would enjoy.

Judy, Good Job on Lift It/HIIT Legs, it is one of the harder ones for sure! I don't remember the ab workouts from that series.

Lots of errands today, otherwise nothing too exciting for me,

Take care,

Deb, I use greek yogurt. I usually buy grassfed and organic. I just did not have any right now. I decided I would get some today and make that salad for myself. I think I am going to have to start working on a low histamine diet again. Cedar pollen is out there and I have been sneezing a lot the last couple of days. That will probably mean cutting dairy though. It is so hard for me to completely eliminate it. I could get coconut milk yogurt. I need to get stuff and start making my own. They charge too much for it imo. I don't think I would want to work all day and have a lot of extra activities. It would be exhausting.

I was just looking for some local bee pollen. I found it interesting that bees go to flowering plants and corn crops do not generally attract them. Corn is self pollinating. I was wondering about this since so many corn crops are gmo.

Diane sue thanks for the recipe. I'm using a similar one I got from Ellie Krueger that uses cider vinegar and a tablespoon of maple syrup but have not done a poppy seed one before
We always had bottled dressing and iceberg when we had salads French or thousand island. Wow I hated that stuff and ....mayonnaise.
Salads have come a long way!! I totally changed my diet and don't make anything my mother made except for a couple desserts, and those are rare. They were good cooks for the time but I can't take the lack of fiber or the calorie load. Or canned stuff like spam and canned soup.

Diane sue also almost all corn is "roundup ready" so farmers can use roundup on corn fields and that category of chemicals is likely fatal to bees. Kind of discourages a good bee populationWe grow corn and weeds are a huge issue because they overwhelm corn during its long growth period and hand pulling is labor intensive. I don't know how farms did it before

Today I stuck with a schedule that I know works and completed my workout early before interruptions could start. I did the Cardio Slam timesaver that reduces the floor and mat work. I like this one because I get parts of all the segments.

We didn't have green salads growing up. We lived in the rural south and my family grew most of our vegetables. As a young adult I made iceberg lettuce salads with awful bottled dressing. I am so glad that I learned better :).

The SS Bonus Abs is not my favorite. I also noticed some neck discomfort after doing it. I don't remember the ab workouts from X Train, but I do like STS Ab Circuits.

Diane Sue, where do you find the different specialized diet plans that you try? Do you keep a list of websites that you visit?

Hello to everyone. Have a great day.

Today I did Strong and Sweaty Cardio Slam with the no modifications this time and the bonus abs again. 63 minutes, 465 calories. I then did Ramped Up Upper Body double biceps timesaver premix #9, 21 minutes, 108 calories. I started out with the 15's for hammer curls but by the second time through I was lowering the weight a bit. I think doing a little here and there will be a good way to build my strength back up. Normally those would have been 20's though. I do like these workouts. The bonus ab workout is getting a bit easier. I still did not use pullovers very far over my head and I used 5's . I went to Sprouts and picked up some greek yogurt and sunflower seeds. I got some of their sale items while I was there and used a 5 dollar off coupon if spending 30 dollars.

Lorie, I was going to do the free preview bounce and step 14 minute workout this morning. I had my bar on my rebounder and everything but could not remember the password I had set for either e mail address. I am sure I wrote it down somewhere. I ended up leaning the rebounder up against the heavy bag with the bar still on just in case I find my password.

Valerie, I ordered some Nebraska bee pollen to try for my allergies before the full blown spring allergies hit. Reading the reviews is what had me check out the gmo corn and pollen. Someone did come back and say something about their crops killing all of the bees. I have a lot of relatives in Nebraska and a lot from farms and they are pretty hostile about the people wanting organic no gmo products. I see them post stuff on facebook sometimes. I would imagine we would not get along on that subject. I know it probably hurts them financially. The thing is I also have a lot of family members who grew up in that area that have died from various cancers. I don't think they get it. We had a lot of fresh stuff growing up and going out to eat was a luxury. Soda op was a special treat on rare occasions. My mother would buy a lot of veggies and want it all cut up and stored in containers for ease of use. I guess because back then everything wasn't purchased already done for you. We rarely ate just hamburgers or had hot dogs and that sort of thing. I do remember bologna coming to the table though. I got made fun of when I was a kid because I took egg sandwiches to school on homemade bread. I liked it! There was an occasional spam or corned beef hash coming to the house but not often. I don't think my mother cared for it all that much. She cooked beans a lot.

Judy, I like using a dumbbell for plie squats. I can go much heavier that way and it is not so hard on the neck and shoulders as trying to hold a barbell in front. I have the dumbbell bars that I can put weight plates and I can load them up really heavy which works well. What is a hex bar??

Deb, there is a whole section of salads that look good on that website. I found on on Pinterest the other day that is a Whole 30 burrito bowl that I have made twice now. It has broccoli slaw cooked up with onions and garlic and peppers . Then it has ground beef cooked up with Mexican spices, and diced canned tomatoes. You put the broccoli slaw mixture in the bottom of the bowl and top with the meat mixture and I top with avocado. I just finished off the second batch for lunch today.

Carolyn, I read a lot of articles and search the internet. I have several Paleo sites that I have bookmarked and subscribed to. I also have some for low histamine diets and anti-inflammatory diets. Fitness nutrition books that I have downloaded and bookmarked sites. I have favorites. Some of them have annoyed me and I unsubscribed but still go to their websites. You get those that are all about you giving them your email address repeatedly to get their information books etc that they are "giving away" Or they are trying to tell you something is free if you just pay the shipping. Oh, and those that pop up a video. I don't watch the videos very often. Only if I sign up for a webinar. The thing with those is you get a lot in your email box after watching them. But, I learn a lot and have come up with what I feel is a lot of good helpful stuff. I find health and nutrition stuff kind of fascinating.

Thanks, I like it. I have never seen one before but looking at the exercises in the second link shows how beneficial it can be.

Its clear something is causing problems for honey bees. roundup ( glyphosate) chemicals are suspected. as you would expect, some weeds are already getting resistant to it so there you go, evolution right in your face. I can understand how commercial growers would want a way to deal with weeds but if it causes the demise of honeybees, it's a hell of a price to pay. the other thing is gmo corn often is the extra sweet variety and it tastes like artificial sweetener to me. you can still get frozen and canned corn that tastes like corn but fresh stuff is overly sweet unless you grow it yourself.
I try to go as organic as is reasonable. some crops don't do well without pesticides and insecticides. we all want "perfect" without any defects or chew holes. when you grow some of your own stuff, you find out how daunting it is to get perfect crops, even small scale. one other problem is commercial growers want the whole crop ripe at the same time for efficient picking. the home gardener wants the opposite! from lettuce to broccoli, I don't want 25 lbs of it all at once, but staggered out over weeks. but most seed is designed / selected for the bigger market. a lot of variety is disappearing because it isn't good in the commercial market. tomato varieties have survived but a lot of others are not doing so well.

we only ate out occasionally when I was a kid, and yes, soda usually 7 up.... was a rare special treat. never had pizza. burgers, fries and a taste only of a milkshake was the rare 'dinner out". I have never.... in my entire life.... had a burger, order of fries, and a milkshake all in a meal. never. the weight issue has been around a long time.

we did a hike this morning 2.5 hours. sort of boring but OK.

judy, how do you use the hex bar? yep, xtrain core 1 & 2 are my standby core workouts. Carolyn, there was a separate disk called Ab circuits I think. is that the one?

Good evening ladies!

This morning I subbed in SB's Arms & Abs Bounce instead of the arm workout scheduled for today. I then did her Upper Body Bounce from her streaming. These two both have the pull ups using the bar. It really is hard especially when you do the advanced. I then did 18 mins of Tabata Battle Ropes.

Deb...we are getting so excited to see GiGi. The picture he sent us today makes her look more adult. I am sure she has grown since we last saw her. The trainer loves her and would keep her in a heart beat if we let him.

Judy!!!! Yeah for apple watch 2! What color did you get? I love my Apple Watch and can not be without it. If it dies today I would immediately have to replace it. My husband likes his too. I really liked that workout with the core throughout. Yes agree it is tough. Great job. Glad your neck is still doing well. As Valerie asked not sure how you use a hex bar? I am really liking SB's challenge and adding in some bounce. I think you would really enjoy a Jumpsport. Sorry to be enabling you!

Carolyn...good to get the workouts done first thing. I love my morning workouts. Love to get in a good one before starting the day. Then if I end up working late or something comes up no worries my workout is done. I have done the S&S core workout a couple of times and have decided it is not for me.

Diane Sue...Great workout today! Your strength will be 100% in no time. The new workout that has the step is really quick. 9 minutes then you stretch. It is perfect for me to get in the evening bounce for the lymphatic system. Still trying to do this every night. Nice she offers a free preview. Hope you found your password.

Valerie...we try to buy organic when it makes sense. We hardly ever ate out when I was younger. My mom being a single mom with 5 kids was hard. If we did go out it was usually for pizza or fish and chips. Still 2 of my favorite meals but I hardly ever have. Boring hike is still a great workout! :)

Have a great night all!

Valerie, I had a landscaper redo our planters and landscape over out tornado shelter. He put out round up to kill off what I didn't want before he redid the ground cover. I had some shrubs and roses I wanted to keep and he told me that the roundup would stunt them but they would come back. I think everything is pretty resistant to it. My girls tend to let the weeds grow in their gardens and crawl through the weeds to find their vegetables. I think they weed some, but it is hard to keep up with. Keeping a garden that is very large completely weed free would be a full time job. They need to go back to growing stuff the way they did before all of this. They just continue to make things worse. Although I guess it increases the food supply and cost.
I try to make sure anything that does not have a peel that is coming off is organic if possible. Yes, you just about have to can and freeze a lot of stuff. That didn't seem so bad to me at first but when I felt like I had to get out there and get the stuff before it was too late and do something with it I did not enjoy it so much. My parents did it all of my life. It was such a habit that even when my Dad was alone he was growing his garden. I think it shrank a bit.

Lorie, I never found the password. I have two notebooks I keep all of those passwords in and I can't find it. I don't know why I didn't write it down. I may have to go on her site and see if I can get another password. I thought the short one would be a good start before I did the other work.
