Pentagenarians & Beyond: 12/08/2024

Today I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, workout one, 26 minutes, 199 calories burned, average heart rate 139, and maximum heart rate 180.

Judy, great job with the Peloton walk, rowing, LMR Lower Body Foam rolling bonus, and Anytime Mobility bonus.

Shannon nice job with LMR Functional Core Functional Pilates.

Valerie, I was glad to see that the Krogers/Albertsons merger has been blocked.

Hello to Diane Sue and Cathy.

Carolyn just for giggles, albertsons is now suing Kroger for not thinking this merger idea out well enough.... or something like that. for me there is hardly a store not part of the merger deal. a few small markets. it was the entire grocery landscape in a lot of western WA. I shop costco regularly as its the closest store, but there is plenty I cant get there. hoping there is no attempt to back off and redo this when the lawyers think about it a little.

off to do a mountain bike ride since weather is dry today but not tomorrow.

No workout as I left before 8 to go shopping. Not sure why our snow warning started at 7 a.m. didn't actually start snowing here until almost 2 and then it's only gone beyond light in the last few minutes. We are now 1-3" total. Glad I made the decision to go today.

Valerie there are a lot of x-country ski trails in MI, but I have no idea what they are like. It did lead me to check out snowshoe trails, official ones are far less numerous. I checked out the 3 in the UP, and discovered to are right by Marquette. I've hiked them both and thought it was funny that they were in a top 10 list for snowshoeing, but the BEST time to use them is May to October! Yeah because they are very rocky, tree rooted and uneven. It would take some major snow to be deep enough to make up for those things.

Judy did your snow forecast make a decision? I'm glad your walking pad is working out for you.

Shannon I'm into pain avoidance, the shots alone would put me off unless it got really bad.

Hi Carolyn and Diane Sue.

Today I did LMR Functional Total Body. I really like this one and can see doing it regularly. I am very happy with this series so far. I also did about 30 minutes of PT work.

Carolyn-Great job with KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, workout one.

Cathy-It didn’t start snowing until this evening and so far we’ve only gotten a little but I’m hearing that the roads are terrible. I’m glad we don’t have to go anywhere tomorrow.

Valerie-I hope you had a good mountain bike ride.

Hi to Shannon and Diane Sue

Judy we got a kitty today on the way from our mt bike ride. it was 75 min and went ok. much harder than riding around our neighborhood on pavement! the place we ride closes trails nov 1 but the roads are rideable but are assorted gravel/dirt surfaces.
weve been stopping at the Noah shelter near here lately looking for a good kitty match for us and we think this little guy will be great. a black, gray and brown tabby with white "trim". very friendly. 1.5 yrs old . seems to be settling right in without fear. still we will keep him in the (very nice and roomy) basement bathroom for a day or two with all his supplies.

Cathy any trail and especially a rocky one wont work for skiing. we ski roads because the grade is not too steep and usually there aren't rocks and logs to deal with. WA is flat to mountainous. for going uphill we use climbing skins on the skis even on roads. its much more efficient. mountain skiing (randonee and telemark) is another sport altogether. no skills there.
roads are graded to climb gradually and not be overly steep for trucks and vehicles . Im a good skier but snow conditions here usually are not "bottomless powder" or anything even close. we call it "cascade concrete". might get fluffy dry snow in the rockies where you can zoom down amidst clouds of billowing powder but not usually here. I like skiing untracked snow. machine set tracks are too far apart to ski comfortably. If there's a set track, I ski with one ski in the track and the other outside. my knees and skis are too close together for standard tracks. my DH has the same problem. coming back down is scary fast. if snow conditions are good you control speed downhill by linking turns. or snowplowing! we have skiied in yellowstone area in great conditions and also truly awful stuff. location doesnt always help. trails and anything steep you can maybe snowshoe. we do that too. if you keep going during the season you will get a huge range of conditions. microspikes are best when snow is packed down. carrying everything you might need becomes quite a load.

Valerie-I'm so glad you found a kitty! He sounds perfect for you. You'll have to post a photo when you get a chance.

This morning I did LMR Functional Pilates + lower Body Foam rolling bonus. That was 52 minutes and 250 calories burned. My average heart rate was 117 and maximum heart rate was 153. I really liked this workout and I’m already feeling it in my core area. Surprisingly enough, my entire body feels loose and relaxed. It’s a little harder than it seems!

Judy, great job with Functional Total Body and the PT work.

Valerie, great job with the mountain biking and finding a kitten from the shelter on the way back.

Hello to Cathy, Diane Sue, and Shannon.

This morning I did STS Disk 38. Second week of Meso 3 and up go the weights. This time I did more targeted stretching since I know which areas got the most sore last week. I'll probably do more stretching tonight.

Valerie congrats on the new kitty! Does he have a name yet? Agree on the photo.

Judy we ended up with about 2", and the schools closed, but like last week, our road is already mostly clear. I am really glad I shopped yesterday though. Thanks for more thoughts on the new workouts.

Carolyn thanks for another review, I may use one of the workouts tonight to keep my muscle loose.

Hi Diane Sue and Shannon.

Hi, ladies. Sorry I’m late. I’ve been working on a rush job. It’s as far as I can take it until a colleague provides more info. Yesterday I did X10. Well, let’s say I used X10 as the basis for my cardio workout. I did one of the premixes that is about an hour long, changed all the high impact moves to low impact, and changed all of the weight exercises to cardio, LOL. I’ve done it several times before, and it works great.

Judy – thanks for the info about the foam rolling bonus. Maybe I’ll try it this weekend. I really like Functional Total Body too.

Valerie – I hope you had a good bike ride yesterday. Very cool how you met DH, and even better that because of it, you got to marry a guy with interests so similar to yours. I haven’t followed the Kroger/Albertson’s merger, but Kroger is the main grocery store out here – that and Walmart Supercenter, which I despise. Yay! You got a kitty! He sounds very pretty. I hope he fully adjusts soon so he can move into the main house with you.

Carolyn – Good job with Cardio Quick Fix yesterday and Functional Pilates today. LOL, there is nothing that will make me like that workout. But I’m glad you do!

Cathy – I’m glad you finished shopping before the snow hit. Trust me, the toenail removal, shots and all, was well worth it. See below if you want to know why.

Hi to Diane!

The Toenail Story: The nail on my right big toe was first “removed” way back when I was in the sixth grade, when my sister’s horse stomped on my foot. Please note that it was not my horse, who was far too nice to do something like that. My toe was a bloody mess when I took my shoe off, and dadgum, it ruined my favorite pair of socks! When it grew back the first time, it became ingrown, so a doc had to remove about a quarter of it. The nail never reattached to the nail bed. It always grew sort of up in an arch. And it was really thick, and grew very slowly. Because it grew so slowly and wasn’t attached to the bed, over the years (decades) skin grew into the nail bed. So I had to keep the nail cut shorter and shorter until last year I gave up and saw a podiatrist. He said yep, the nail needs to be removed. So we went through the process I described the other day. However, the acid didn’t kill the root, and the stupid nail grew back. It was headed straight into the skin that had overgrown the nail bed. So on Monday, off it came again! TMI, right?

got another new computer today. I will use temporarily but DH's system is dying too. both our desktops were about the same age and not able to go to Windows 11 when it tells you hard drive is failing, it is. we decided to keep the dell system and replace the wireless card. so I will use that one and he will get this new HP one. its a lovely system but the keyboard is hard for me. it seems to measure the same but feels very compressed and I keep hitting wrong keys constantly. plus its not elevated enough. Im not a great typist but he cant type at all so he will do fine with this. the dell keyboard was better fit for me and the screen was too. thi one is bigger, 27 while dell was 24 and it is hard to fit on my desk.

sad saga of an injured toe. horses can do incredible damage just standing around. i have a nailbed injury from a long ago cat bite. she bit thru the nail on my right middle finger in at least one spot. it was a bad bite but the situation was sort of dire and she lived and my finger healed but the nail has never been the same. probably 40 years ago, and its better but not like the original.

I never could understand people who have dissimilar interests getting married. didnt they plan to do things together?? isnt that what you want in a partner? this worked out well for us.

we have only kroger and albertsons stores near here. or one of the other chain stores they own. the store i shop at was destined to be sold off. so relieved the pending deal fell thru.

Good morning, everyone. Yesterday I did LMR Barre and the upper body foam rolling add on. It was okay. Turbo Barre from her Low Impact Series is much harder. Of course I know this is geared towards older people, so easier is fine. I'm just not ready to slow it down that much yet. My ankles are a little sore from standing on the balance disk. I sort of liked the add on, but I won't be able to use it. The pushups on the foam roller were really cool. Loved the instability factor. But they totally killed my arthritic wrists. I powered through so I could get the full feel of the workout, but I won't do it again. Sigh.

Valerie - I totally get it about keyboards not fitting. The best I ever had was when I worked on a Mac. I got a mini keyboard, and it was absolutely perfect for me. No other one compares. No way can I used a full sized board. I hope your new computer system works out

Huh. the bad thing about being almost the last in yesterday and the first in this morning is that I don't get to do personals. I'll check back later for everyone else.

Last night I did the Pilates Fusion workout, minus the fabric loop part because I didn't want to work my legs like that. This morning I did a mix I made from AOLIH and the Restorative Yoga. I really like that one, and I did use my blocks for most things. Happy to say that so far my legs have survived yesterdays workout, but those workouts can have an 18-24 hour delay for DOMS so I won't feel out of the woods on that until tomorrow, but all that extra stretching during breaks really seemed to help.

Shannon huge OUCH on the horse stepping on your foot. That would really mess up a toe. I like horses fine, from a distance, but I've never really been around them so not comfortable with the up close. Your toe issue is definitely very different than mine. I love Barre, so we'll see how I like that one. I still need to inflate my second disc. Hoping the pump with it works more efficiently than with the first one. I've never used the X10 workouts much, I'm glad you found a way to make it work for you.

Valerie Hope with the new computer and wireless card you stop having issues. I started at the State as a typist in '79, but I was never more than okay at it. DH kills me as he can type quite fast, but then his fingers are longer than mine. I like the keyboard on my MacBook, but I do have to have it at the right level to be efficient. Maybe the fact that we had bigger keyboards back when I was working was hindering me. And now I don't type anything with much length to it. Especially not for hours a day.

Hi Carolyn, Judy and Diane Sue.

Random thought as I sit here working. I wish walking could be my main form of cardio because it's just so NICE. But it won't work me hard enough at this stage of my life.

Cathy - what is AOLIH? All Out Low Impact HiiT? That seems sort of odd to combine with restorative yoga to me. But I guess you do your cardio then a nice relaxing cooldown, maybe? Horses are wonderful. Granted, some can have quite an attitude, but I loved mine so much. Good grief, did my sister and I have a blast when we were kids. My last horse died in 2016. She was born out here and lived her whole life with us. She was such a gentle giant. Half Appaloosa, and half Belgian Draft.

Today I did Cardio Party and the Extended Stretch. That was 48 minutes, 292 calories burned, average heart rate 123, and maximum heart rate 159.

Cathy, great job with STS disc 38, Pilates Fusion, and AOLIH mix with Restorative Yoga.

Shannon, great job with X 10, and LMR Barre and Upper Body foam rolling.

Valerie, good luck with the new HP computer and replacing the wireless card in the Dell.

Hello to Diane Sue and Judy.

I learned to type on a standard typewriter long long ago when it was assumed I would be a secretary or something. with the carriage return and all. I now have a couple arthritic fingers that interfere and have developed a unique way of typing. it works for the amount I do. the slightly larger keyboard is better although I cant tell exactly what the difference is. the keys stick up a little more? the letter keys seem the same but other keys not quite. the keyboard tilt is higher? whatever, I can do both but given the choice I like the dell one better. we finally did get a return shipping label for it, but it seems pretty simple to replace the wireless card and we already have the system and except for disconnecting from the internet often, it works fine. DH knew his system would need replacing but suddenly its circling the drain so this is easier for everyone. we have another desktop in MT that will likely die in 2025 too but the paperwork for it is over there.
I always loved the idea of horses and riding but got wounded! kicked. tossed. off when DH decided to pull in a garden hose past the pony I was riding. that was exciting! fell off along (with the saddle) one time. never got really injured, just bruised and sore. weve had acreage but DH really does not like horses so that was never on the table.

Today was an active rest day. I did LMR Functional Mobility Fusion. I think this one is perfect for an easy/active rest day. It felt similar to a yoga class to me.

Carolyn-Great job with LMR Functional Pilates + lower Body Foam rolling bonus and Cardio Party and the Extended Stretch. The Functional Pilates workout sounds really good.

Cathy- Great job with STS disc 38, Pilates Fusion, and the AOLIH mix with Restorative Yoga. We ended up getting about 2 inches of snow.

Shannon-Great job with X 10, and LMR Barre and the Upper Body foam rolling bonus.

Hi to Valerie & Diane Sue

Yesterday I did Lift Move and Restore Barre Fusion with the foam roller upper bonus, 71 minutes, 163 calories, heart rate 92/139. I really liked this, it did a lower body move, then upper body usually with light dumbbells, and a core move. weight was generally 3#.
Today I did Lift, Move, Restore Total Body, 55 minutes, 157 calories, heart rate 102/131. I followed it with the Anytime Restorative Yoga bonus, 24 minutes, 47 calories. Total time was 79 minutes, 204 calories. I really wanted to try this weight workout even though I needed to modify and lower weight. I am not wanting to kick up pain since I am cleaning house tonight and cooking and prepping tables and stuff for Sunday's family dinner. I want to enjoy the family Christmas gathering. I doubt I will post the next two days. I will probably do the Yoga Fusion tomorrow morning. I have not done that one. I have done some of the premixes here and there. I will hold off till next week for the upper unless today's total body causes me pain then I will wait.

This morning I did STS Disk 31 Chest and Back. This is the heaviest week of STS with 6 reps. Last night my legs started getting a bit sore, but still nothing bad.

Shannon I need to do Cardio and yes you got the initials right! The restorative yoga was a lot of curiosity, and some of it is good for leg muscles which I was trying to keep from tightening up.

Carolyn great job with Cardio Party and the Extended Stretch.

Diane Sue I'm glad you are enjoying the new series. Hope all your prep work for Sunday goes well. Enjoy your day.

Judy great job with LMR Functional Mobility Fusion. Now that we're done with the snow it's going to warm up and rain, such a weird weather pattern.

Valerie by the time I took typing in school we had the original electric typewriters but every room had a couple manual typewriters and we all got a turn on them. I'd used my grandmothers manual before that so I wasn't unfamiliar with them, but the electric ones were nicer. When I started with the state we had the basic electrics, and a few years in I got a job that was part typewriters and part computer data entry. I was actually far better with data entry than typing. To this day I can still do a number pad pretty fast, though I rarely have a reason.

We did a park walk yesterday for 1 hr 15 minutes. got it done before the rain started and got all our assorted errands and groceries done on the way home. a marvel of efficiency!. did therapy work and some upper body things later.

the saga of the failing computer goes on. we got the wireless card but the card itself was not the problem. the connection to the card is. so the unit goes back. all this stuff is so tiny DH needs a magnifier to work on it. utube had easy directions but it was supposed to click/snap on and it doesnt.

we are returning the system to Dell. already gone. we put it back together and are done with them. this was the most aggravating situation imaginable. even if they had sent us the wireless card fast as it turned out they could do , the problem was not the card. not fixable. DH is going to use a Mac instead, one he has had for a while he used for photos. we used to need to use windows based computers for work. the next thing is the home stereo system and new dvd since that is failing too. since nov 1 every electronic piece we own has decided it will fail.
I only had a manual typewriter for a long while, then electric came on the market, but I didnt need to type anymore then.

This is my rest day. I had my investment club meeting this morning. It’s hard to believe, but January will be 25 years that our club has been together. A couple of changes, but it’s still mostly our original group of women.

Valerie, I learned typing on manual typewriters as well. I was pretty good at the time and even had a few jobs during college that required typing skills. I’m sorry that the computer fix didn’t work. Is Dell sending you a new computer?

Judy, nice job with LMR Functional Mobility Fusion.

Diane Sue, great job with LMR Barre Fusion, Total Body, and Restorative Yoga.

Cathy, great job with STS disc 31 Chest and Back.
