Pantene

I have used Pantene products on my hair for a few years now and my sister-in-law's hairdresser told her this weekend that Pantene products are the absolute worst thing you can put on your hair. Apparently they put a lot of wax (the same type of wax they use in floor wax) in their products and it's incredibly bad for your hair. I am now having to go in and have all the wax buildup stripped from my hair which I am really not happy about. Has anyone else ever heard this about Pantene?

I think a hairdresser is trying to make some extra money. Have you actually noticed a "waxy build-up" on your hair?

Let me guess: The hairdresser is recommended whatever product they just happen to sell at his/her salon for
shampoo/conditioner/finishing rinse/mask/spray/gel/etc., etc.?

Sorry, I'm cynical when it comes to stuff.

I don't think you need to go get the wax stripped from your hair. You should just be able to use a clarifying shampoo, like maybe Neutrogena, to get rid of the build-up.

Aveda also makes a wonderful clarifying shampoo. You use it for about a week and it should do the job.

I have also used Pantene for several years. I have naturally wavy hair and if there were "wax" build-up, I think that I would have probably noticed by now. I keep trying other stuff, but keep going back to Pantene because it's what has worked best for me time and again! I do, however, use a clarifying shampoo once a week...any more than that, my hair gets super brittle and yucky.

yes, I had a hairdresser tell me the very same thing. The wax builds up on your hair and causes "breakage". I haven't used Pantene in years.

My hair dresser told me the same thing about the build-up. She said that it is the wax in the shampoo that makes your hair feel so healthy and smooth. She never tried to "de-wax" my hair, just said that if I did choose to use Pantene, to make sure to use a clarifying shampoo before having anything done to my hair (dying, highlighting, perm, etc...). She said that the Pantene interfers with the chemicals and can cause a mess. I've had other hair dressers tell me this too, so I avoid it.

I wasn't told that about Pantene. Then again, I don't use their shampoo/conditioner. I heard that Finess shouldn't be used either. Apparently, you could use Finess to clean the tar off your tires. LOL

A stylist my mom went to several months ago told her the same thing and she and I thought she was just trying to push her products off on her, but now this is the second time a hairdresser has told someone I know the same thing, so I'm starting to wonder if it isn't true. She did say it will cause my hair to break from the buildup. I don't know. I'm going to try the clarifying shampoo (I think it's Aveda) she said works the best and go from there. The only thing that makes me think that this could be true is that when I color my hair the color doesn't seem to work like it used to. I've been using the same color on my hair for years and it used to be a really pretty auburn color. Now it hardly looks like I've colored it when I'm done. I thought they changed the color, but maybe if there is this wax buildup on my hair it's not allowing the color to take like it used to.

Uh Oh! I have been using Pantene for years. There was a book out a while ago where someone tested all hair care products (shampoos, conditioners, etc.) and Pantene was one of the grocery store brands that she recommended. I think the author was even on Oprah. She did one about make-up and skin care, too. If I don't use Pantene, what is another good, affordable product to try?

The same hairdresser that told me not to use Pantene, told me that if I wanted to buy drugstore products, Fruictese (sp?) was a good one to try, that or Tresseme(sp?). That's typically what I use, either one of those. I try to mix it up, after awhile products don't work as well after you've used them continuously. Probably once a year I splurge on some Biolage, my hair loves that stuff!

I read in one of my fitness magazines last month that a couple of drops of apple cider vinegar in your shampoo works to take away buildup. Haven't tried it yet though.

Prior to buying Loreal Professional Series (pink bottle), I used the Loreal brand for colored hair sold in stores. I think it was Loreal Vive. Recently, I found the Loreal Series at the local Excerd drug store for the same price as the salon. I'll buy it at the salon since they frequently offer discounts and larger sizes. My hairdresser didn't have any negative comments about the Loreal brand.

Pantene Shmantene...all hair stylists are pushed to sell product and more product. They don't want you buying Pantene or any other store brand. They want you to come into their salon and pay the 50% (or more) markup for Redken, Matrix, Paul Mitchell (vegan friendly), Joico, KMS etc. Personally, I hate Pantene but there are other salon products out there I don't like either so I stick with Matrix (Biolage) and/or Joico. I also happen to have a good friend who is a stylist and salon owner who picks up the products for me at cost. Otherwise I'd likely stick with L'Oreal since they are made by the same company as Matrix.

I heard the same thing from a beauty school. I now used not to expensive from beauty stores, I had major wax build up and I used a clarifying shampoo that took care of it,

Several different beauticians have told me that. They said the wax build up causes the hair to just snap in two. I do remember that when I used it, I had a LOT of hair that was only around 1/4" to 1/2" long .....and the rest of my hair was down to my shoulders and past. I always thought it was new hair growing in....but I was told it was breakage. She asked what shampoo I used and I told her. She said it was the Pantene. Everytime I switch hairdressers, I ask that question to see if they advise not using Pantene...they said the same thing. :-( So I don't know if they tell you that to push their products....or if it is true. But an awful lot do say that!
Anyway....I haven't used it for around 13 years!

Not to be rude or say that everyone is the same but.....
Press your stylist for more scientific information and see what happens. In all of my years of going to stylists I could only find one who could actually explain the chemistry behind various products, even if it was completely biased towards overpriced products (of which I confess to indulging). Most quote "studies" or product information without even understanding the words they are using. It's a business.

My hair person always recommends Tresseme as a very good off the shelf product. He said it used to be a Salon only brand but they went mainstream. I use thier hairspray which is very affordable and works real good at holding my hard to hold hair and I can get it at my grocery store.

Ironically, Sebastian shampoos build up on my hair and they are supposed to be top notch!

Ex stylist speaking here. There is nothing wrong with Pantene at all. There are some pricey pro product that are way worse and cost way more! I do not usae it myself, i use Phyto... but Pantene is just fine! You would be surprised at what the non educated stylist will say to you.. like your hair will not grow if you do not cut it every 8 weeks. Ummm, hair grows from the scalp and cutting the ends will not stimulate your dead keratin to grow!!! Also there is nothing that will repair your hair, products only temporarily make it feel better. Do not listen and take to heart every thing you hear.
