pace weight question

Hi,

For those of you who bought them to use with STS, are 9 weights enough? and did you buy the case ?

Thanks!

Becky

Becky, I bought the whole case. So, far I haven't' used more than 6 at a time, but I think that will change as I move up in the program.

i only got 9 and did NOT do the case. i work out in my home gym and just lay them on a fluffy towel when there not in use. 9 is enough and the case is not necessary unless you plan on traveling with them.
hope this helps, by the way there great!

I got 9 and the case. l imagine the case isn't necessary if you have someplace you can keep them safe and organized. But I definitely need more than 9. Between the 15# and 20# weight ranges I can only do up to 17# dumbbells (4 on each dumbbell), then have to jump to 20#. Same thing going between 20# and 25#, 25# to 30#, etc. It's not a problem at the lower weights since you can get 8# and 12# dumbbells.

I got the set of 18 weights (9# total since each wt is 1/2 a pound). I also got the case. I don't strictly see the case as being necessary but it does keep the weights nice and tidy if that is important to you.

I have not used the weights all that much until STS. Now what I do is set up as many wts in advance before starting each workout. For example, yesterday I set up a 46# barbell (2 weights), a set of 18# dumbbells (6 each or 12 total), and a set of 23# dumbbells, well I must not have since I would have run out of weights. But you get the idea.

If you want the ability to do a full 5# increment with dumbbells, I think 18 weights (9#) is the way to go.

I do find using the pace wts with STS often causes me to take longer than 30 second breaks. This is because I both take notes AND set up weights between many of the exercises. That doesn't really bother me since I'd rather be using the correct weight than taking the correct break. Just thought I'd mention it.

I bought 2 sets also in order to be able to add 4.5 #'s to each dumbell - that would help me be able to use smaller increments for shoulders, bi's & tri's and the rear delts that small increments is the best way for me to add.

It has helped with chest work also in moving from 15# to 20# for flies.

No case here - I have a separate workout room so there are weights all around the perimeter anyway. :p

I am thinking about these too. Am I right that you would always add increments of 1 lb so that each end of the DB would be balanced? Or would it make that big of a difference? The only body part that I would consider this on are shoulders.

It all depends on how you intend to use them.
I suggest an 18-weight set (case or not: I got the case to protect the magnets and to protect other things FROM the magnets, as well as to store them).

In order to add up to 4.5# on TWO dummbells, you would need the 18-weight set. And being able to add 1/2# at a time, until you get 1/2# away from the next weight increment, is very useful, IMO.t a

9 pace weights only add up to 4.5# total, so only 2.25# per dumbell, which would still leave a 2.75# gap between one increment and the next (which doesn't seem like much, but if you can go up in smaller increments---microload---it's easier to be able to lift more without your body noticing).

You could add 1/2# at a time, and just hold onto the dumbell a bit closer to the end where you added the weight, making sure the weight feels evenly distributed.

MANY THANKS to everyone for your help !

I think I've decided to buy the 18# with the case ! I do only workout at home but I like the idea of them staying safe & organized in the case. and I see that I will probably use these more and more as STS progresses.

THANKS! :)

Oh , just one more question ! Do any fitness stores carry these? I am just trying to avoid the shipping charges if possible.

Thanks,

Becky

I couldn't find them at any store. And I agree that the set of 18 are best. I have mine pre-stacked into 1/s, 2/s, 3s and 4s depending on what I need for that workout. It makes the weight transfer a little quicker. I'm really glad I bought these. All my STS numbers are coming out like 14 and 17 and odd numbers that my barbell or dumbells can't handle.

Where did you buy them if you can't get them at any store? My weights on STS are all odd also so I need these fast.

I have the whole set in a case but have to tell you I think they're a hassle to use. Unless you already have them ON the dumbbells you're using when a move is starting, you have to quickly fight with them (magnets stick together and are a struggle to get apart when they're as large as these) to get them on your dumbbells properly before the next move starts. If they aren't securely attached it's tough to focus on getting the most out of the move because you're so worried they're going to fall off. I actually went shopping for 12lb. dumbbells because I got tired of the hassle of dealing with the Pace Weights when I needed a weight between 10 and 15 lbs. I actually find (now that I finally have 12lb. dumbbells - which don't match my set but, whatever...) that when forced to choose between picking the too-heavy weight vs. the too-light, I'll really push myself with the heavier weight just so I don't have to pull out the magnets from Hell.

I'm glad you brought this up because I've been wondering if anyone else has had a similar less-than-great experience. I'm sure I'll still use them... surely...

They can be trouble some to get apart - but i think they are well worth the effort. BEWARE - they will pinch your fingers when putting them together. I like to put one on the floor and stick the others to it rather than holding it with my fingers.

Becky, I'm glad you are going with the case. I have found out just today, that I need more than 9!
