Oprah & "The New Earth"

RE: Oprah &

I don't believe. I KNOW GOD is there. I am also KNOW that people have pain and carry it with them...just go to any country where people are hurting. The pain is virtually visable in the country; let alone in the people. When all the pain stops we will truly be at peace. AND the pain won't stop until all the wars and starving and geniocide stops...

Note to all: My Mom hijacked my identity and posted under my log in for the last post :)

ETA: I personally have enjoyed this thread and now have many new authors to investigate. Also very impressed with TeTe's wonderful gift. Keep writing!

RE: Oprah &

Since I am coming to this thread very late I will keep my comments short. My thoughts:

1. I thought that this thread was going to be a *discussion* of A BOOK(and the accompanying webclasses.)It is only A BOOK we are talking about here, right? I guess I'm confused where all of this talk about *not putting other gods before GOD* is coming from because this is just A BOOK, right?

2. I find it, well, interesting that anyone would feel the need to *warn* others about this book. We are all adults here. We all can and should be taking personal responsibility for our decisions. I know I don't need anyone to warn me about any book, movie, etc. unless I ask for advice/suggestions. I would find it totally understandable if someone had asked if this book was appropriate for those of ________ faith but I don't think unsolicited warnings are really necessary on a forum that consists of adults.

3. I respect everyone's opinions and feel strongly that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that is why I feel so strongly about point two. Given the way the OP stated the original post I don't think this thread was meant to be a discussion of reasons to NOT read this book. Again, had anyone ASKED for responses as to the appropriateness of this book that would be entirely different.

4. Having said all of this, I have had this bok on my Barnes & Noble wishlist for about a year and I am definitely going to have to read it soon. And, of course, all of this is just my opinion.:)

RE: Oprah &

First I must say to Edie that I'm sorry that your innocent post took this turn but everything happens for a reason.

That being said, I tried to avoid posting but I guess my fingers have a mind of their own.:p I believe in God but I am NOT religious. I don’t really know the Bible, never studied it, know a few excerpts from it but I also know that the words that we read were written down by man - man who is subject to his own interpretation and his own ego - an ego that may intersperse his own beliefs into those writings. I wasn’t around that many years ago so I have no basis to state that what the Bible says IS exactly the teachings that were meant for us to learn. What I do know, in my heart, my soul, my spirit, with every fiber of my being, is that God wants us all to love ourselves and in doing so, we can love others. When you are love, you project love, you give love and there is no reason for hatred, anger, and resentment towards ourselves or others. Now, of course, that would be lovely if we could all feel this in this world but that’s just not the way it is. God wants us to be kind, considerate, passionate, understanding, helpful, and tolerant towards others, just to name a few. We teach others what’s in our beings, deep down, not on the surface by our words and actions but from what's inside of us that surpasses those words and actions. I don’t give 2 ½ flying hoots what religion or beliefs someone has UNLESS they condone, in any way, not allowing someone to have their own ways of connecting with God. Religion is man-made, spirituality is your connection with God. (I believe one of the Baldwin brothers made that statement that, to me, says it all.) God knows me, and I am learning more about God constantly through the connection that He and I have. It is quite profound. Believe me, I get nudges all the time if I am not doing something that is in my best interest. Unfortunately, I don't always listen. x( This connection can not come from writings or rules or words from any other source. He gives us many tools to improve the quality of our lives and to not let hatred, anger and resentment eat at our souls and our bodies, which many of us allow. If He has created us, then there is a piece of Him in all of us. We are well equipped to live loving, joyful, satisfying lives. We just need to sort through the muck that holds us back and learn to enjoy the essence of who we are and the potential that we have.

O.K., ‘nuf said……..for now. }(

RE: Oprah &

Ok I had to respond...I watched the youtube post. Oprah states and I quote "if God for you is still a belief then it's not truly God" and the author agreed...so aren't we still talking about this book? I disagree with Oprah's statement. The christian faith is centered around faith. Without it it's impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6) Im not here to push my beliefs on anyone or tell them they are wrong for reading it. It's just not for me...

RE: Oprah &

So, anyone reading the book have additional thoughts? Do you recommend it? Why or why not?

BTW, I am a recovering Cafeteria Catholic, which means I am a proud devout Catholic now. Just had to shout out for the RCC since there isn't much of that these days. ;) But, I know y'all will accept me as is.

RE: Oprah &

I'm late coming into this discussion. I didn't open this thread for a while because I'm not a fan of Oprah so it didn't interest me. When I saw how many posts it's received it got my attention.

I have to say that I'm disapointed how Jess has been attacked here just for stating her beliefs. Many others chose to state their own beliefs (that were against hers) but that seemed to be OK. I didn't feel like she was attacking anyone but because she chooses to believe in "ONE" way then that makes her "intolerant, narrow-minded, without love, scary, compared to an Islamic terrorist, and a wacked out fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints". (These comparisons all came from the above threads)

I appreciate Jess posting the youtube clip. I found it disturbing. It's kind of scary the influence Oprah has over her fans and how many will take what she says as truth when she couldn't be any farther away from it.

Of course that's just my opionion. Take it or leave it.

RE: Oprah &

I watched the youtube clip and want to thank Jess for sharing. It answers my questions, and I now know if this book is for me or not. I haven't read all the posts since I used the "find (on this page)" function when I noted the direction of the thread and confirmed what I expected. Anyway, I do appreciate you sharing the clip Jess.

RE: Oprah &

And another thing...(I know you guys are like oh God...here goes NB again) but seriously...how can you say there is no death when you haven't died yet? Nobody's been back from the dead to tell us anything (except Jesus:) I had to throw that in there) His "teachings" don't make sense to me. ok ok I'm done now...dont get too annoyed with me...I cant help it. Im very passionate about the things of God.

RE: Oprah &

"I can't stand the notion that the only way to 'God' is through Jesus Christ, in my opinion that is narrow minded beyond my comprehension and breeds intolerance by it's very nature."

:)

No desire to fan the flames here, but that "notion" is based on the Bible. "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, No man comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6).

I guess the biggest gift that God gives us is free will....we're free to believe what we want.

:)

RE: Oprah &

See Jess -

When you post what you did HERE (on this thread), including the clip- its implications is that what I'm referring to - the book "A New Earth" and Oprah webcast, is somehow wrong - even if you are intending to warn Christians.

How would you feel if you started a post on a wonderful Christian book you were reading like "The Purpose Driven Life" and someone posted a clip that stated "beware of Christians they are narrow-minded and throw everything out of proportion like a simple 30 second meditation to quiet the mind into a MASS TRANCE!

Now - I'm not saying that - I just said what if? How would you feel? And if you are a researcher like you said you are, have you actually been open-minded enough to read "A New Earth" in order to have an opinion? If you haven't, how can you judge it? Are you judging it just based on the clip you posted? If so, you've adopted someone else's opinion.
and when you say "be careful" - you are judging it, - the implication is that there is something to be careful of - that there is somehow some kind of danger.

I was a little taken aback at first after reading your post and viewing the clip. BUT, I know it is your ego stating its opinion. It is not the real you. Like Tolle states in his book we are not our religion, our work, our labels (mom, dad, doctor, teacher, etc.), we are not our mind, opinions or our thinking processes. The real you is pure loving Essence/Consciousness/Presence.

And your statements like "my absolute Truth" has indications that only your Truth is real. There's a tone of righteousness that doesn't escape.

In any case, my original post was to try to connect with those enjoying the book and webcast because for me, this book has brought a lot of peace and perspective into my life.

RE: Oprah &

ok I want to be the first to apoligize to everyone concerning my posts on this thread...Im not apoligizing (did I spell that right?) for what I believe in...but I didnt think anyone would start getting upset once the conversation starting talking about God. I thought we could talk about one's beliefs without the name calling but I guess not. And obviously nobody wants to hear what we Christians have to say so with that being said...Edie and anyone else reading this book Im sorry if my comments were offensive or if I got off subject in any way. My intentions weren't to annoy anyone...

RE: Oprah &

<This is a book I will not be reading. Im a Christian....nuff said. To each his own I guess>
I guess the non Christians aren't interested in what the Christians have to say and I guess the Christians are not interested in what the non Christians have to say (or write in this case). 'nuff said
