Oprah & "The New Earth"

RE: Oprah &

Allison, Sparrow, Emily, Beavs, and Carolyn--

Thank you. I'm not trying to convert anyone, but, well, I just couldn't keep quiet!!!!

Or AM I???? How do you know that I'M not Satan's spawn, luring you into my inferno of lies??? I mean, my parent's names were Lilith and Beelzebub, but that probably doesn't mean anything significant, does it???? }(

RE: Oprah &

Missy, in what way is TeTe saying "cruel things concerning God" "in a spiteful way" here? I didn't see anything cruel or spiteful about her post. She simply shared her opinion. What's spiteful about that? *shrug*

RE: Oprah &

It takes courage to speak out when you know your words are likely to be twisted or misunderstood. I'm sorry to see that Missy perceived TeTe as being spiteful and cruel. I didn't see that at all...just a commentary of people who claim to know kind and good and who act in a way I suspect God (or Goddess, Goddette, Gods, Gawd, whatever you believe) would be very disappointed.

It has been many moons since I read Ayn Rand but I'll join you Carolyn when you do. Who knows, I may decide I hate it but I'll accept the challenge ;-)

RE: Oprah &

Oh, Carolyn, good luck with Ayn "RANT"!!! I did like her first book, "We the Living," okay, but "Atlas Shrugged?" Great title, great image, but I'm not too keen on her philosophy and those 30-page monologues were TORTUROUS!!!!! I mean, how many words and pages do you need to get the message "Greed: Good, Benevolence: Bad" across????

Love to hear what you think after you read it.

RE: Oprah &

TeTe - Yikes! I'm scared now! I knew it would be a tough read. It sounds like I may get lost in those 30(!!!) page monologues!!

Beavs - I plan on starting it next month. I'd love for you to join me. We can suffer together! :)

Carolyn

RE: Oprah &

No Carolyn! Don't read Ayn Rand! I tried and I got so bored I quit halfway through. And you know I always finish books. TeTe's right, it's major overkill. Which is annoying because the ideas are very simple. Oh and I also really disagree with her, so it's extra annoying.

Read the new Nick Hornby I sent you. I guarantee it'll be more fun! Or your money back! Or you could pick up some Proust and read along with me. Do a reading group with ME! You get to see Jason all the time. Pay attention to ME! }(

RE: Oprah &

Well, it's not that new. It's Slam. I just got done reading it so for me it's new. Did you read it? It was, of course, brilliant. And much better than icky Rand.

RE: Oprah &

Listen, whenever John Galt clears his throat to just answer a question, expect about 10 pages. When it is said that he's going to perform a speech, it's 50!!!

I guess everyone should read it, well, just because it's one of those books. I have friends who claim it's the best book they ever read, it changed their lives, etc. and I have other friends who think she was just a nut case.

I tried to get past the philosophy (which sounds good at first...what could be wrong with advocating personal responsiblity and hard work, etc.?), but, well....you'll see. It's how she treats the minor characters that tells it all.

We'll "talk" more after you read it. Hell, maybe I'll read "The Fountainhead" while you and Beavs read AS. I've worked with enough architects; I should have read it by now.

RE: Oprah &

Well Carolyn...let me know on what form of torture you decide upon and I'll join you.

*strolls in with slightly raised hand and wry expression*

Yo! I second the You Rock as well as the Dancing Banana.

Another recovering (recovered) Catholic here.

Love Nick Hornby - must check that one out. Tried Rand once, years ago. Couldn't go there.

Have The Power of Now on ILL (well, I'm waiting on it, ever so patiently)

Would recommend to any open minded, fearless types, recovered Catholics included a bit of Anne Lamott; Traveling Mercies, Plan B, and Grace (Eventually)

Thats kinda how I feel right now myself. I DO read alot about different religions, beliefs etc. The more I read and learn the more solid in my faith I become. No matter how you are raised you have to choose what you believe. I came on this thread to offer some advice to who may want to hear it. If you don't agree... like I said several times thats fine. I have been kind and trying to answer questions the best I can... I know God would want me to stick up for what is in his word. I for sure haven't done anything that would make him dissapointed. You all have been very strong about your beliefs and why mine don't matter and are so offensive I don't know why. My belief is in an absolute truth. Yours is anything goes. Either way they are beliefs. I should have the freedom to voice mine as much as yours without being called intollerant and other things. BTW if I didn't care about you all (being fellow humans on this earth) I'd keep my mouth shut and not care what you believe.. but being that I CARE I shared what I believe to be the truth. I feel I've been sorely misunderstood.
I'm off this thread now. thanks for listening. If anyone wants to discuss anything PM me.

I don't see where, by this one sentence, she was judging, condemning, jumping on a soapbox, etc.

She specifically addressed CHRISTIANS - if you do not feel convicted/uncomfortable, go ahead and read/watch whatever you want.

If you are not CHRISTIAN, her post is irrelevant.

Some of my Christian friends feel uncomfortable watching some movies that I and other Christian friends have no problem with.

That is the beauty of having a personal relationship with Christ. If it's right with you and Christ and his Word, what others say don't matter.

RE: Oprah &

"My belief is in an absolute truth. Yours is anything goes."

Hmmmm.... perhaps it is statements like this that others are taking offense to? Who are you to say that your beliefs are an "absolute truth" while mine are not?

I find it admirable that you are such a deep believer and wish to share your feelings, but warning others that they are inviting "satan" into their lives by reading a book about inner peace is not the best way to go about it.

RE: Oprah &

Jess,

With all due respect, you contradict yourself in a previous post. In one sentence you state that we should all do research, but in the same post you ask "why would anyone have a book on spells and divination?". So forgive some of us if there's some question about tolerance. I'm sorry if you've been misunderstood, but there's some basis for it.

I think it's wonderful that your faith is so solid.

For the record, I have a book on spells and divination. It sits on my bookshelf with copies of the Tao Te Ching, Tibetan Book of the Dead, Bhagavad-Ghita, Gnostic Gospels...and the Bible...I really dig research.

RE: Oprah &

The message of the good news: Jesus is one with God, and who is God? God is LOVE.......and what is LOVE? Love is patient Love is kind love rejoices in justice, love is merciful.....you cannot know God unless you know Jesus/justice/love/mercy/ no matter WHAT name you call HIM, if you embrace what he IS - those sublime virtues that rises us above the animals (in some cases!)....He gives ya credit! Scripture ALSO says....the Kingdom of Heaven is WITHIN YOU!!!!

RE: Oprah &

I'm new to this board and don't know anyone very well but I do believe Jess has been misunderstood.

I think because it is percieved that Oprah is a Christian and because she promoted this book that it is an asumption by many that the book itself is about the Christian faith. I beleive Jess's intent was to dispel any such belief to those Christians who might not be aware of it. She even stated in her post that she was speaking to Christians.

As for the reading of Spells and divination she does say ..."Unless you were interested in believing/being involved in that you would not.."

However, I can't help but believe that we do Cathe a disservice for continuing this thread. She has been so gracious to give us this opportunity to discuss our passion for fitness yet we show such discord with one another.

RE: Oprah &

I'm entirely bummed that what started as an interesting conversation about a specific book has degenerated into a baffling and unnecessary "what do the Christians think about it" thread. I would have no problem at all with a thread about Christians and New Age spirituality - that would be interesting too - I just wish it hadn't been inserted here.

It lights the whole sky.
