Opinions on this bench?

Liann

Cathlete
I've got some reward points to use up on one of my cards and this is one of the items available. My DH's big argument about a weight bench is that it will take up a lot of space. This one might solve the problem. I don't want to get it if it is just a piece of junk though. What do you guys think?

It claims to accommodate a 5 ft. bar which is what I have - Troy Lite.

I can only find 1 review on this bench on the internet. Does anyone have any opinions on other similar benches? The only thing I don't like about this one so far is that there is no squat option. I've seen several others that have a bowed in back so you can do walk-in squats.

Hi Liann. I like that you can fold up the first one. I agree with Catherine. I have one similar (kind of) to the one on Amazon and my 5ft barbell barely fits on the squat rack. I don't have much room left on the ends for plates and I'll eventually have to get a 7ft bar. I had to modify it with extra clips to keep the plates in place.

I have the Gold's Gym one from Walmart...LOVE IT!

Catherine - Do you think my troy lite plates would work with a longer bar? Or will I have to buy all new plates too?

It doesn't show it in the picture, but that second bench actually folds up too (it shows it on a different web site). That's almost going to be a must with my DH since he is already whining about all of my other equipment. You'd think he would be glad I'm trying to stay in shape! ;)

Your plates should work with a standard barbell no matter what the length of the bb is. As a matter of fact I use my troylite clips for my bb because they are easier to get on and off. You may want to eventually get some heavier plates though. I just got a set of 25 pounders-it's much easier than having to put on so many 10s and 5s :7

The only problem I have with my bench is that it's too tall. My feet don't touch the ground. IIRC, you are a bit taller than me :p so I don't think you'll have that problem ;)

Catherine - LOL, your feet don't touch the ground? How tall (or short ;-) ) are you? I'm 5'3" and my feet touch the ground. I do have a hard time with hamstring curls. The pads just end up in uncomfortable places. My legs must be too short!!

Yes, this is the one we have. This is the one I have anyway. Is this the same as yours Catherine?

I love that the squat rack is a separate piece.

ETA: I did the "ship to store" Liann and saved on the shipping. It came in in about a week or so.

ETA #2: Just to add: this is really well made. I was/am impressed. IMO, it should cost way more than $140!

I think I am going to go for that wal-mart one a little closer to when STS is shipping. This would actually be perfect for my workout room because the weight bench I have in there now is not detachable and sticks right in the middle of my workout space. It would be so much nicer to be able to move the bench sideways when I'm doing my DVD's and not have to worry about bumping into it.

I have the Walmart Gold's Gym too and it's one of the best $140 I've ever spent.

I use that thing ALOT and love it!

Okay Catherine, it probably isn't just you. Especially since you are 3" taller than me! When I do a flat bench, I put my feet up on the pads for hamstring curls. Mine more than likely don't reach the ground either. I do the same thing with incline work. I thought that you meant that your feet don't reach the ground when you are just sitting on the bench.

That explains alot because I remember you from the RT, I knew you were taller than me!!

Tess - you will LOVE this bench! I bought mine on Kathy G's recommendation and I am beyond pleased with it. Hi Kathy!

Yup, that's the one I have too (the walmart one). Being older and tall it is so much easier than getting up and down using a step. I don't like that it takes up so much room but it sure has come in handy for hanging a few clothes on to dry in bad weather (I don't have a dryer).

Melissa - I have a question on the ship to store option for that walmart set. Will the box fit in a car or do I need to have a truck or van to bring it home?
