Opinions on this bench?

RE: Tess!

Yep, sounds like you're caving. But for this price - WOW, it's great what you get. Even DH was amazed. I answered your question about the bar on your Kathy and Melissa thread. Let us know when you cave. Liann, congrats on your purchase. You will LOVE it!!!

RE: Tess!

Thanks Tess! Looks like we are running back & forth between two threads! Ha! Sorry to keep asking dupicate questions! I really appreciate all your help.

It looks GREAT Tess! I have that weight plate holder you have in the corner, too. ;)

Enjoy!

RE: Tess!

Hi Ladies,

I recently injured my foot and it looks like I will have to modify some of my exercise for a few weeks. I've been on the fence about buying a bench for leg work but it seems that now is the perfect time since I won't be able to put alot of weight on my foot. My question is whether the bench is relatively easy to move. Does it have wheels? At some point I will be able to do squats again and just wondered if it will be too much to move the bench on a regular basis.

Thanks,
Trish

RE: Tess!

Btw, while doing some research on this bench Icame across this on a different fitness forum regarding the bb size that can be used with the bench...

"In true Walmart fashion they have products made just for them and the XRS20 bench they sell is only for olympic width bars. If you want the piece for the rack that allows the use of a standard bar, you have to order it from Gold's Gym 877-776-4777, part number 245691, key number 8. Costs $30 - $40, depending where it has to be shipped."

I'm not sure if standard is 5' or 6' but thought I'd pass it along anyway for those who are interested.

RE: Tess!

Trish, thanks for that link to order the part so it will fit a standard barbell. Now that I have mine set to olympic width, I don't think I could go back to standard. It is so nice to have the space so you don't feel cramped. I am loving my 7' barbell too. Makes me feel so strong!! :)

Catherine is right about the bench, it slides very nicely on carpet. It doesn't have wheels which you wouldn't want anyway if you're doing any sort of moves off the bench like dips or rows.

Sounds like you want to use it initially for the leg extension attachment. I used it for that yesterday and thought it was great for that. I also used it for hamstring curls with no problems.

RE: Tess!

Thanks Tess! Good point about the wheels not being good for dips or rows. I guess I wasn't thinking about those exercises;)

For the hamstring curls, do you do those seated or lying flat? I remember in the gym that I belonged to there was a machine where you could lie flat and place your heels under the foam roller and lift up. I wasn't sure if that was possible since there is a roller in the knee area...

Tess - When I get mine, will I need to set it up for Olympic width with my 7' barbell? I'm confused after the post about needing a special part to fit a "standard" barbell. What's standard? - 5', 6', 7'?

RE: Tess!

Standard width is 6' and olympic width is 7'. I bought the bench about 9 months ago when it came with both "base" extensions to make it either standard or olympic.

We put it together as standard and I tried doing squats in there but felt "squished" so I had DH take it apart and make it olympic. Poor guy! The olympic width seemed more stable too.

HTH,
Kathy

RE: Tess!

Yes what I meant by standard barbell in that post was standard width, a 5' or 6' barbell. The base of the squat rack part has a long attachment at the bottom that connects the two sides together. I only got one size for this attachment that sets up to olympic width even though the web description says it can be set to standard width. I didn't see any way of setting it to standard width with the materials it came with - I guess there is some kind of other attachment you can buy separately to accomodate that.

Also, just to muddy it up more, the barbell you ordered is a 7' "standard" barbell which just means that it holds plates with 1" holes as opposed the the olympic plates with bigger holes.

4 those of U that got the rack!

Help me out please~My DH called from Walmart and was going to surprise me with the Gold's Gym Rack!!! He just called and basically doesn't think I should get it. He thinks it doesn't look like great quality??? He said he doesn't think it is what I think it is. Also said I have to have an Olympic size bar which I knew that. (I have one but it weighs 45 #'s on it's own!) And, he said I will be in trouble if the weight is too heavy, that I will not be able to get it back up by myself! He said he will get it if I wanted him too but he's not a happy camper about it. Waaaaaaaaah! I told him to get it, I would look at it before we put it together and decide. Sooo, those of you that got one, how do you get a heavy weight/barbell back up there??? I want it so bad but need to be wise. Any comments? (I will check in later...we are headed to a movie as soon as he gets home.)

RE: 4 those of U that got the rack!

Debbie there are saftey hooks that some use for cases when they can not get the bar back up. But I just don't put myself in the position to not be able to get the bar back up. I don't (or try not to) push to failure. But if I know that I am going heavy, I make sure DH is around to help if necessary. I really don't think you'll have a problem.

RE: 4 those of U that got the rack!

Hey Debbie! I'm surprised that your DH didn't think it was good quality. I am actually pretty impressed with the quality of it. Maybe once you get it home and take a look at it he'll change his mind.

Also, I don't have an olympic bar and I have no trouble at all. I do need to upgrade to a 7ft from the 5ft one I have right now, but other than that I have no trouble.

Good luck and let us know if it ends up working out for you!

Debbie - How much is the one your DH was looking at? All of the Wal-marts around me have a really cruddy version in the store too. It's not Gold's Gym though, I can't remember the name of it. It is much cheaper than the Gold's gym version which is $134.99 in store. I went by and saw the one I ordered in a store in Hanover and it was very good quality. I was really impressed with how heavy and solid it was. I think your DH must be looking at the wrong one.

RE: 4 those of U that got the rack!

Debbie - I was just reading Liann's post and I wonder if your DH is looking at the wrong one like Liann suggested.

Is DH referring to squats when he says that you may be in trouble with getting the weight back on the rack? Because you can set the squat rack to your shoulder height and pretty much just walk into it to re-rack your barbell. There really is no need to lift the barbell onto your shoulders or off.

Keep us posted and let us know how it turns out.

RE: 4 those of U that got the rack!

Catherine, Melissa & Liann~Thanks so much! That makes me feel much better. Liann, yes, we got the Gold's Gym one. I think once we take it out of box and get it put together, maybe he'll see that it is just fine for my purposes. There was no model on dispaly so the only thing he had to make his opinion on was the pix on the box. Wish me LUCK! I can't wait. Melissa, I am glad to know that you do use your shorter bar with it. I know I'll be able to use the 45lb-er for some things like squats. (At least I THINK I can! Ha!) I can't wait to see the "Squat Rack Track" on STS! Now, that you have enabled me AGAIN, I best get busy and use it! (Now, I have to get DH to put the thing together or at least help me!) Thanks for all your help. You guys are the best!

RE: 4 those of U that got the rack!

Ok, now this question sounds really silly. What is different between Olympic bar and the bar Cathe used in the DVD one (like Wal-mart or Troy bar)?

Thanks

PS: I went to check out our Wal mart stroe. They said it was out of stock now. But they would re stock it in 5 days. Just FYI. For those who did not see this model in store, go ask them if they are going to stock it.
