Opinions on diet drinks

Does anyone have any opinions regarding diet sodas and weight loss? My husband and I seem to be addicted to Diet Pepsi, and while I know that they are bad for us, I just can't seem to get myself to stop drinking them. Does anyone have any info or advice?

Good morning, I just read an article about this...the thing w/ diet soda is the caffeine which is very high in diet soda. coke has 34mg while diet coke has 45mg. pepsi has 38 mg and pepsi one has 55mg,caffeine dehydrates the body. Diet soda has an effect on calcium in the body, which ofcourse for women can be even worse. Well I hope this gives you some info.

Some people think the aspartame itself is a toxin. I don't drink the stuff, but maybe Kathryn will pipe in. I think she has some links she could post.

I have to change my habit of drinking the diet sodas that my daughter's boyfriend swears that the stuff will shrink your organs. O.k., never heard that one before, but I know diet drinks aren't good for us, but what about the flavored water drinks such as propel? I gotta have some kind of taste too.

When I drink soda I drink diet 7Up.

One thing I love to do is brew my own iced tea. There are some great flavors out there, & a lot of decaf options--Celestial Seasonings has a decaf Mandarin Orange tea that I just love. I use Splenda instead of sugar.

I bet you're addicted to the caffeine more than anything. You could try green tea with splenda.

My dad is a biochemist and won't touch anything with aspartame in it. He won't touch Splenda, either. I figure, if a biochemist won't go near it, then it must be bad stuff. My dad says that the regular stuff is way better for the body, even though it's loaded for sugar.

What's interesting is that I've actually read accounts and done research that indicated that diet sodas can CAUSE weight gain. And, when you look at how weight has skyrocketed in the years since sugar-free this, sugar-free that, and diet sodas were invented, I don't think many can say that these items really contribute much to weight loss.

Plus, caffeine is a problem for people trying to lose weight, as someone already mentioned. I stopped drinking caffeine and lost something like 3-5 pounds in two weeks. All I did was stop the caffeine-intake...and I lost that much weight.

I was addicted to Diet Pepsi for years . I only drink one once in awhile now,(Like 2 cans a year maybe)and can not finish the whole can . And boy do I get a buzz . I use to down a twelve pack plus of it a day . My do our bodies change . I cut back slowly ,and when I got down to like 3 cans a day I went "cold turkey "..Part of how I stopped was to read about soda pop and What it doesnt do for us . Anyhow Its only Bad Bad bad .It doesnt aid in weight loss. Infact it makes you not loose !!! Takes all nutriants out of your body ... I could go on and on .:) :) Good luck .I drink water ,1% Milk and Tea (Green)now all day long .:) :) :) .My body really loves me for it Too !!!

hmmm, I bet if I counted I would be in the same boat as you as far as the amount ~ about 12 a day. That sounds absolutely awful now that I've written it, but I know it's true! Anyhow, I've never tried green tea ~ don't know if I could get that down or not. I can manage water, however. Thanks for the advice!

I don't drink them. I used to drink a LOT of diet, caffeine-free sodas, but I gave them up 3 years ago because I was afraid that I was doing something bad to my body.

I love flavored seltzer - it has the carbonation that I love, comes in many flavors and no calories! It took a little while to get used to after drinking diet soda for so long, but now I love it.

Ditto here. If I gave up everything experts say are bad for me I'd starve to death. :p

I must respectfully disagree that diet drinks do not help lose weight. I was addicted to 7 Up for years, & when I went on Atkins I went diet & dropped lots of weight very quickly. I mean, if you consider it--8 oz. of regular soda (or any drink w/sugar for that matter) is typically about 25 carbs, usually more. If you drink 5 servings a day you're taking in 125 carbs--totally empty carbs for that matter (on top of the fact that you're supposed to have >20 carbs per day to lose weight w/Atkins). Add that to other carb intake--the good stuff like bread & pasta--& you have a recipe for obesity.

Take away that 125 carbs, & you can still indulge in one or two servings of good carbs per day (say, up to 60 carbs) & lose weight.

Of course that's Atkins--if you're doing low fat it might be different b/c there's no fat in soda, but still b/c of our body chemistry (we burn carbs before we burn fat) I would think going w/diet drinks would still be pretty effective.

I don't think Diet Drinks will help you loose weight, but I don't think they hurt weightloss either. I know they are bad for you otherwise because of the caffeine & acid. I rarely drink soda of any kind unless I go out to eat, and on two occasions my nasty step mother in law, who drinks regular pop said "they say that diet makes you gain more weight than regular!" which makes no sense at all. It has no calories, and no carbs, so how can it make you gain weight more than regular soda?

It really irritates me when she says that anyway, because I don't need to lose weight and I feel like she is implying that I do, but thats another story.

i quit drinking diet mountain dew (a year ago this friday, as a matter of fact!)

it's full of chemicals and i was adopting a new, healthier way of eating... i haven't looked back!

i used to drink between 4 and 6 cans a day! now i drink maybe one can of 7 up plus or diet dr pepper a month... if that!

Diet Rite is pretty good. they come in Tangerine, Rasberry and white grape. they sell them w/ canned drinks, they come in a 12 pk. they are sodium free, sugar free, fat free caffine free, and use splenda. they taste just the same as Sunkist and Welch's grape to me!

I used to drink them maybe 3 or 4 a week, when I was anorexic, and they had saccharin in them instead of aspartame. This was many years ago (20 or more). Now I drink about one a year. I'm on a long road trip, need some caffeine, nothing available but a drink machine, etc.

They taste gross! But they do the job. I think if one a year is going to hurt me, I need to be weeded out of the gene pool anyway...

I used to be so addicted to diet soda all my friends knew when I was in serious need of a store soon. I used to say I had a diet coke arm, and I could literally feel when it was getting "low" ...i.e. "withdrawls!" I quit doing that about 10 years ago, cold turkey. I also say replace with green tea, it's very good for you. And water. Treat yourself with some of caffiene free sodas every once in awhile.

I've read in several fitness/health magazines lately that diet soda might actually make you GAIN weight because artificial sweeteners can actually stimulate hunger. There are some "natural foods" options in the Organic foods sections of a lot of markets that are sweetened with Stevia (a plant) and has LESS (about half) not zero calories. I agree with the flavored, unsweetened carbonated water, maybe with a little fruit juice squeezed into it. But I don't often drink carbonated drinks because they make me feel so bloated!

I'm a certified Diet Coke addict, altho I'm down to 3 cans a day now! WOOHOO. The only thing I do is to make sure to add 1 glass of water to my regular daily intake for every caffeinated beverage I drink.

When I drink hot green tea I use a touch of honey so it's barely sweet. Iced tea I like straight up. I have never found any artificial sweetner palatble but I have never been a soda drinker. I think sweet is tricky because whether it's high, low or no calorie, it makes those taste buds want more. There was a study that showed that people given extra calories in jelly beans adjusted their food intake accordingly but soda calories were not adjusted and they consumed extra calories. I consider soda like candy. Not something to be taken in regularly. Artificial sweetners, like trans fats, I avoid as much as possible. I just don't trust them and sugar is really not so bad if it's eaten in small quantities.
