Everyone that I know (online) considers Newport to be the hardest of the Art of Strength dvds--even one of the hardest they own. I wouldn't start with Newport. Providence is much better for a range of levels, but it doesn't have a tutorial. The Providence remake with Beth Chamberlin has a tutorial though--so that might work for you. My favorite is Lauren Brooks' dvd. She has a great tutorial, and you can do the 12-minute workout until you feel ready for more.

That said, I would really, really recommend seeing if you can get a session with a Russian Kettlebell Certified trainer--it's really easy to injury yourself with kettlebells. That's not to say that you can't teach yourself safely--plenty do! But it just helps a lot to have someone looking at your form to see what mistakes you're making (this stuff is very different from weight training--the 'rules' about not locking out legs/arms, etc. don't apply here).

Ok, so no gloves.... but what about the blister factor? I'm getting a nice giant one on my middle right-hand finger -- hurts. Do I just tough it out and hope for a callous?

Hi Beth,

I get calluses all the time. For bad calluses you can soak your hands in hot water and then sand the calluses what a pumice stone. This is what is recommended in "Enter The Kettlebell":

1) Soak the hands in hot water for at least 5 minutes.
2) Dry the hands and wait 30 seconds or so.
3) Sand the hand with pumic stone or sandpaper callous remover.

Also Cornhuskers Lotion is recommended.

HTH,

Thanks everyone for posting and responding to this! I have some great ideas for Christmas presents. :) I think KBs need to be in my immediate future.

I couldn't agree more! I have Lauren Brooks' dvd and actually started out with the 12-minute workout and have just moved up to the 40-minute one. I also have AOS Newport and tried it over the weekend. YIKES! Not ready for it, that's for sure. I did just order AOS Providence last night, not the remake though since I feel as though Lauren's dvd has a great tutorial and I learned alot from it. Can't wait to get it!!!!

Kathryn-get on with doing the 40 minute workout!).
LOL!
I DID!
I did it yesterday for the first time. I did skip the repeat of the last two segments, though, as my grip and lower back were starting to feel iffy (and I follow Pavel's advice to never go to failure on KB exercises).

All your fault!

I resisted for a long time ... really, I did!

But after reading this thread, I broke down and bought the Lauren Brooks DVD and the beginner KB kit, too. So in a few weeks I'll be raving about KB workouts with the rest of you!

I guess it's because I'm 47 too!

(Warning: If you're 47 and don't want to buy kettlebells, don't read this thread! :D )

That's funny, Kathryn!

Hey Jane, I don't think I'll mind callouses so much, it's the blister I have currently that's bothering me. Do you know how long it'll take for it to change into a callous? I'm doing some sessions with Tracy Reifkind, and she recommends a "sock sleeve" instead of gloves. Basically, you cut off the top 2" or so of a crew sock and pull it onto your hand so that it puts some cushioning where the blisters would form (but your fingers are exposed). I'm going to try that next time I swing. Her website is fascinating, by the way:

I really like her Food and Thought link.

Hi Beth,Sorry! I read your post wrong. I don't know how long it will take to form a callous. I have about 4 callouses and no blisters. Thanks for the info on Tracy Reifkind.

Where to buy Kettlebells?

Well....I resisted as long as I could. Count me in as another KB convert. I just hope I like them. I would hate spending so much money and then not like them. Anyway, I ordered the Lauren Brooks DVD and the AOS Providence remake. Now I just need some kettlebells:) Where is the best place to buy from where I won't have to pay such high shipping costs? Any ideas would be great! Thanks in advance!

Attn: Jane! :)

Jane, just thought I'd update you -- my blister didn't hurt for very long at all. It's not really quite a callous yet, but it's not painful, which is all I wanted. :) Those sock sleeves really work! I used my kids' socks so they wouldn't be at all loose on my hands.

Hi Jacque,

Walmart has the best prices I have seen so for. You can check there website www.walmart.com then do a search for kettlebell. Have a great day;)

Thanks Teddygirl! I'll check out walmart as soon as I get my kids off to school. I'm hoping they have the free site to store shipping for kettlebells!

Falling off the fence on the kettlebell side

Thank you so much for posting--I think. I thank you, but my bank account doesn't. I've been wanting Kettlebells from reading the other posts.

Oh, and I'm 41. But ones look like sevens--right? Evidently this is a dangerous post for anyone in their 40's!

Suggestion

I had an idea to save our wrists during kettlebell workouts. What about using our leg-warmers (left over from the '80s)?

You can bunch them up around your wrist and your hands would be free to hold the kettlebell. That would save everybody from having to buy and chop up tube socks. And it would provide more cushioning than tennis wristbands, too.

Well, I'm going to give it a try. I'll admit that I don't still own leg-warmers. I'll actually have to spend five bucks to buy a pair!

Terrycloth wristbands! Like little tennis wristbands. These have been perfect for preventing that little red sore spot on my forearms. I got'em for three bucks at the sporting goods store!

I recommend the GoFit KB's that are sold at Target and Dick's sporting goods. They are high quality, pretty (!) and come in sizes from 7#-45#. A good starting weight would be the 15# (or 20# if you are stronger).

Here's GoFit's website so you can check them out (they don't show the 7# one) : http://www.gofit.net/site/gofit/section/83

Last time I checked, Target had the lighter ones (7#-20#, I think) and Dick's had the heavier ones (20#-45#...though I'm not sure they had the 45# in stock. If not, you could have them order them when you need one.)

I've looked at the Walmart KB's, and it looks to me like they are cheaply made.
