OMG Kettlebells

I'm going to hop in here with a quick question...can you use DBs instead of KBs? I ask b/c I am scared to death of splitting my head open, or breaking a wrist, or smacking a cat...the KBs just scare me. I asked a guy at a fitness store that sells KBs if DBs could be sustituted and he said indeed, and I figure he sells the darned things so it must be somewhat true, but want to ask the pros here.

You can use DB's for some KB moves, but they don't have the same flow as KB's for many moves. You can definitely try out most moves with them. I think some of the moves would be more risky in terms of splitting a head open (yours or the cat's) or breaking a wrist using a dumbell.

I did Kelsie's (The Firm) workout. Kelsie 'bout tried to kill me! This was my first time doin' an actual workout. I had done them in a gym. I really enjoyed the workout and workin' out with them.

After reading this thread I went to Super Target and got the 15# gofit kettlebell. Just tried a few moves and already my butt is sore.

What's the opinion on dvd's, the gofit Iron Core volume 1 or the Lauren Brooks Ultimate Body??

Okay, I just bought my first kettlebell today!!!!:) :)

But now I am wondering how many different weights of kb's I will need. I bought a 12K thinking I would use it for all the moves, but after reading this thread I'm wondering about that. Do I need more than one size? Do you all have more than one???

Hi Deanie! I think once you get your form down, you'll be able to tell whether or not you can up the weight on certain moves. I've been working with a 20lb kb for a couple of months now and am ready to move up to a 25lber for some of the moves.

BTW: Leanne, I went to this little fitness supply store in the next town over from me and got a 25lb kb for $40 and a 30lb kb for $48!!! The total of the two is what I would have spent if I ordered the 25lber from Target.com. It'll be awhile before I use the 30lb, but I feel good knowing I have it and the guy told me that he can barely keep them in stock. Glad I grabbed it. PLUS: he seemed a tad impressed when I "cleaned" them both to carry them out!!! I was huffin' when I got to the bottom of the stairs since the store was on the 2nd floor, but it was worth not having to ask for assistance!!

Oh, and parkercp, I HIGHLY recommend the Lauren Brooks DVD!! Have fun!!

Okay ladies, I'm finally getting interested in kettlebells. I hear they are great for golf fitness too. Anyway my question, how much room do you need to have to do your typical workout? I don't have a real large area in front of my TV set. Would hate to send one flying right thru the middle of it.

Thanks,

Netta, for me, I don't need any more room than for a wt w/o. You just need room in front and above you to comfortably swing.

Thanks, Catherine. I do have a ceiling fan over me, but I can step to the side of it. I'll have to check out some clips and see how far the swings go. :)

What an awesome score, Melissa!! :D

I haven't heard too many good things about the Iron Core workouts; the folks I've talked to who have them said that they're really boring and the production quality is really bad. :( Lauren's DVD, on the other hand, is great, and it does seem to be a favorite around here.

Lauren's DVD and the Art of Strength ones are much more expensive, but prices on the better kettlebell DVD's just run high. It'll be nice when they (hopefully!) start coming down in price!

I have the Iron Core 1 and would say it is boring indeed compared to The Kettlebell Way to Your Perfect Body (the remake of Providence). The Kettlebell Way really gets me working out because the pace is good, the music is good and both Beth and Anthony are so good to workout with. I could not get the Lauren Brook's workout as it does not ship to my country. Either way go for The Kettlebell Way or Lauren Brook's. You won't go wrong.

Hello my lovelies :)

I haven't posted in a while but when I saw a post in this thread about using leg warmers for your forearms I had to chime in! I absolutely adore Kettlebells. They've put the fun back into working out for me. I was reeeaaally burnt out on Cathe (sshhhh--don't tell her!). I feel like a total athlete now. I can't stop reading up on Kettlebells and educating myself on them. It's like these bad boys breathed new life into my workouts. I got to the point where I couldn't even move because my body ached so bad from all the constant pounding I was doing to it. No more Imax 3 for me, that's for sure. Kettlebells kick my butt just as good as any Cathe workout but without the pounding of the Imax's, Kickmax's, Bootcamps, etc. I swear, they're a godsend.

Anyhoo, long story short, I bought these for myself and they've saved my forearms (and I have a feeling they might work a wee bit better than legwarmers ;) although the concept is basically the same). http://kettlebellinc.com/products/showproduct.php?prod_id=99 These things are really great. Well worth the 20 bucks (well, $21.95 or whatever it was with shipping).

Oh and Kettlebellinc.com is my new go-to site for all things KB. And Lisa Shaffer (who I believe owns the site) is awesome. Great customer service. She emailed me, personally a bunch of times.

Anyhoo, I miss you all and love you all. Enjoy your Kettlebells!

Hey Allison!! It's good to hear from you. Glad you are enjoying kbs!! I've just recently gotten into them myself and love them. I still do Cathe cardio and throw in B&Gs for good measure LOL!! Thanks for the website. Take care GF!!

Hey, Allie! I'm so glad to hear that the kettlebell workouts have grown on you and you now like them. We miss you!!!

I usually don't post anything in these forums. I'm basically a lurker and read them pretty much everyday. I' not a very good typist and it takes me forever. However I must share my kettlebell experience. I have been doing Cathe for about four years.I have about 20 dvd's and do them faithfully. My diet is good and I thought I was in pretty good shape. I started noticing all the kettlebell talk in the forums and thought I would give it a try. I went to a class once a week for about 6 wks. Loved it, but I love working out at home, so i purchased a 18 lb. kettlebell and The Art Of Strenght Providence DVD. and started doing this about three weeks ago. This is why I Had to write. My body is totally changing. I cannot believe the results I'm getting with this workout. It is truly amazing! All my problem areas are shaping up. I'm 47 and my rear view is not what it was years ago. No matter how many lower body rotations I do Nnothing seemed to lift it. In three weeks of kettlebell my rear has lifted and firmed with the nice little dent in the side. I actually feel it looks bettter now than when I was in my thirties!Even my arms (always had the tricep flap) are sculpting out. I just believe it. If anyone is on the fence about these workouts I urge you to try them. I can't wait to get some more DVD's.I just wanted to share my experience.

OMG. I am GETTING this workout! And, yes, I'm 47 too.

I love my kb too! I've been doing the go fit tutorial till my Providence dvd arrives (hopefully this week) I love the challenge and the way I feel- empowered! I am even considering cancelling sts to use the money for kettlebells! (gasp!)

How are you all incorporating them? I was going to use the kb for my full body day, but I would love suggestions.

Oh, and the AOS website has become my "go to" place. I love the minute of strength videos! Really helped me on my turkish get ups!

I got nothing but love for my kettlebells too.

They brought my motivation back big time after I was struggling with boredom and burnout too.

Gotta love those swinging bells :)

Hi Deanie,

I usually do kettlebells two days a week and do one day of weight training. I have been doing lots of running (training for a 1/2 marathon) so my rotation looks like this.

Monday - rest
Tuesday - KB workout
Wednesday - run
Thursday - KB workout
Friday - run
Saturday - upper body weight workout
Sunday - run

The AOS website is fantastic!
