New Runners June 2010

Hi ladies,
I walked three miles this morning with a girlfriend. We kept up a good brisk pace and it was on the beach so that's the closest thing I've had to a workout this weekend. I take that back, cranking up amberjacks does count as a workout too. I wish we were close enough for a cook-out, I'd bring the fish! We actually took some fish to a local restaurant where they fried it (I was not responsible for cooking decisions!) for us. Tiffany had a lot of extended family in town so we fed about 20 people but there's still tons of fish in the freezer.

Tricia and Jane - Thanks for the compliments! It was a nice day.

Tricia - I'm glad you felt better on your run today. The heat and humidity can really kill you.

Jane - Congrats on conquering the hill! And then working out! And then working out again. You are officially a machine. :D

Alisha - I like intervals more than anything! I think they do great things for your body too.

Cindi - What are you doing for vacation?

Lisa

There's nothing better than fresh fish! :D (wish this thing had a drool icon!)

Well, that does it. We have to get together for a race and fishing and a cookout! :D

Good morning! No workout for me yesterday - too busy.

Jane - That's a great leg workout. I really like walking lunges. I did miss Paul a lot yesterday and Honor was not happy because she had to get her lower braces put on yesterday and her teeth hurt. And my heel is still hurting even though I haven't run in over a week now. I was pretty bummed yesterday. I'll snap out of it soon though - I don't usually get down about things. :)

Alisha - She has a duet I recorded on YouTube! It's not great quality because I used my Nano to record and was steadying it on a desk. She's in the back with the lighter hair.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3YGbEKLoDg

You can see her and her friends doing a music video here. She's wearing the scarf: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jradyY2PSI&playnext_from=TL&videos=EKFAOsFeuDU

And here are the boys from last summer being goofy: http://www.youtube.com/user/CLPerrine#p/a/u/1/QS_Tt3D_9pY
It's my voice in the background. They had rolled down the hill once and ran into each other so they wanted to try again - and of course, failed. :)

Tricia - I feel the same way about the weather! I was wondering - do you know anything about Gillian McKeith's cookbooks/eating plans?

Lisa - We are dropping Honor off at a camp in Ohio then heading up to niagara falls for a couple days. I would love some fresh fish! Do you remember that episode of Gilligan's Island where they are doing some kind of Jeckyl and Hyde story and Gilligan turned evil whenever you yelled FRESH FISH!!! :)

Hi ladies,
I did PLB this morning. What a way to jump back on the bandwagon. I'm feeling it now. Puppy class and agility tonight.

Tricia - sounds like a plan!

Cindi - no, I haven't seen that but it sounds funny.

Lisa

Hi Ladies!

I'm home for lunch so just checking in briefly!

Cindi - I look forward to checking out the videos after work tonight! I hate that you're still having problems with your heel! Have you considered acupuncture or acupressure or anything like that?

Lisa - Oooh! PLB! That was just last week for me! Definitely a good one to start back on! Have fun in puppy class!

I'm going to try to make myself get a HIIT run in after work today. Gotta get my running endurance back up! Hopefully, just 20 minutes - 5 warmup and cooldown and 10 30/30 intervals. I really should, but it's so stinking hot. I remember running in this all summer long last year! What's happened to me? My Southernness is weakening! Nooooooo . . . . . arrrrrggghhhhhh . . . . fare thee well, oh, southern tolerance . . . :p

Unfortunately, I still have the accent, though!

Thanks Tricia - I have a bone spur on my heel so I don't think it is something that you can fix with accupuncture. I have done accupuncture in the past for my back and it was great. I have a new podiatrist I'm going to call - she's a runner so I hope she can give me some better guidance on how to manage this.

Hi Ladies!

I am going for a swim tonight unless it rains. I have to do 160 laps!!:eek: I'm not sure what I'll do if it rains, probably Firepower or something outside under the carport if there is no lightening.

Lisa ~ All this talk of fish has really made me hungry!! I LOVE FISH!! Have fun in puppy class!

Tricia ~ You need to come down here for about 2 weeks. You'll find your Southernness coming back really fast!! Last night it was really humid. It had just rained and everything was just steaming. I was dripping sweat.

Cindi ~ Those videos were great! I loved the music videos and the hill rolling. I could see me doing that when I was younger if we had the capabilities back then. We used to sing commercial jingles into the tape recorder. Ok...I'm weird.

I love walking lunges too! Hope the new doc has some good guidance on how to handle your bone spur. You can vent here anytime. You got to get it out and move on.

Hi Alisha!

Hope everyone is having a Terrific Tuesday!

Cindi - Oooh, sorry! Did you say before it was a bone spur? Wow, I have a horrible memory! I hope the new doc has better advice!

Jane - I hope you don't get rained out! Do a few laps for me! Ugh. I remember those days! Low visibility days just from all the steam coming up off the pavement! LOL.

Well, I was going to try to get in a HIIT run this afternoon, but it turned all cloudy and super humid! Forget it! Yes, I wussed out! Hey, it's all good! I'm doing Rhythmic Step tomorrow morning, so it's probably for the best that I didn't wear myself out running tonight!

Okay, I'm getting hungry, so I'm off to change clothes and start my dinner - Sweet & Sour Chicken! Yummy!

Cindi - Just got a look at the videos! How talented Honor is! Amazing! And your boys! I'd try that! Even now, given a proper hill! LOL! They looked like they were having fun! Where were you? The area looks very pretty.

BTW, hello to Alisha and Lisa! I apologize for not saying so before, but I've got a monster headache and am not thinking straight!

Tricia- I hope your head feels better soon!

I did a couple of miles of a walk this morning (low key, no hrm) and then this afternoon I did Step Fit followed by Video Max, which is my job running around a construction site with a video camera:D Hot and sweaty should be the name of my company but I bet people would get the wrong idea about the kind of videos I make. When I tell you that I actually get paid to watch paint dry, its true.

Cindi- I am so sorry you have a bone spur. I wonder what would cause that. Loved the videos!

Jane- yeah, I don't think that swimming and lightening go together. Which did you get to do?

Lisa- mmm fresh fish, hey do you think I'm part cat?

so tired

I'm taking a rest day. I spent the night with IBS discomfort (sorry for the tmi) so I will just do some yoga with Gary Bromley. This will shift my rotation a little bit, but as you girls say, its a change of plans.

The rest of the week:
Today: yoga
Thursday: Cathe
Friday: Joggle 2 min. intervals
Saturday: Cathe

Good morning ladies,
I haven't worked out yet today. I hope to do PUB tonight when I get home. I had to be at work early this morning to meet the insurance adjuster about the deer damage to my car.

So here's my excitement for yesterday. Do you all remember Winston, the foster dog whose adopter passed away a month or two ago? Yesterday I got a call from his attorney that Ann (who had taken him) had decided not to keep Winston and was I still willing to take him back? I said of course. They asked me to call Ann and make arrangements to pick Winston up. They had already talked to her, etc, and all I needed to do was go get him. Okay. I called Ann. Ann had no idea what I was talking about and said she needed to call the attorney. Um, okay. A couple hours later, I call the attorney to figure out what's up (I'm supposed to leave next week for the summer so need to retrieve him before then if that's how things are going to go). The attorney says that Ann thought she had found another home for Winston. Um, okay. I'm not thrilled about him going to someone I haven't met but, okay, I have to have faith that she has found him a good home. I get a phone call this morning from the attorney that Ann has decided to keep Winston herself. Okay, yay, great! But why did I have to ride this rollercoaster?? Anywho, I just feel like there is going to be another chapter in this saga somehow...

Tricia - I hope your headache is better this morning!

Alisha - Enjoy your yoga. I find that not having a real rotation makes me feel better about changes to my rotation :)

Jane - How was swimming?

Cindi - Oh man, good luck with your heel.

My friend came in with a pair of Sketcher's Shape-Ups today. We wear almost the same size so I got to test drive them. They were weirdly comfortable and helped stretch out the back of my legs. I just wish they weren't so darn ugly and expensive.

Lisa

Hi ladies - no workout again for me. Had packing for Honor's camp next week and realized we needed to go get her more stuff for the trip.

I got Turbo Fire yesterday - I'm thinking of doing that after my vacation and start back to running gradually.

Thanks for all the nice words on the videos. The boys and I were in Cleveland. Right in between the Science Museum and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was two summers ago.

Jane - did it rain or lightenting? We used to sing and do commercials too when we were kids. Now you can tape it and add special effects, they have a lot of fun.

Tricia - I don't know if I every said it was a bone spur. For a while I didn't believe it was..but the bump is still there. The good news is that all the pain around the spur is gone - just some stiffness around it and as long as I wear clogs/open back shoes, it feels fine. The problem is when I put on running shoes, the heel is pretty rigid in the back of the foot so it aggravates the area all over again. I went for a long walk in my Vibrams last week and there must be a seam or something right at that spot because by the end of the walk, it was really irratated - almost a blister. So getting the right shoe is going to be a huge issue - I'm hoping the pod dr can help with that and advise on an insert. She may say it would be better to just remove it surgically.

How's the headache?

Alisha - I really don't know which came first - the spur, then the tendonitis or the tendonitis then the spur. But I really think the tendonitis is gone. Agreed - hot and sweaty would be misleading for your video company! :)

Lisa - I hope Ann truly is committed to Winson! Poor thing. I have a pair of the sketchers and totally agree with you. Ugly and pricing but strangely comfortable. I had a discount coupon at Kohls when I bought them. But no matter what I wear them with - they look like orthopedic shoes.

Hi Everyone,

I swam 10 laps last night and then it started thundering so I sadly left the pool and went home and did Firepower along with some swings and wall squats.

I really want to go running tonight but tomorrow there is a smaller chance of rain so I'm doing the following circuit today and will run tomorrow.

5 Rounds - 30/15

Kettlebell squat to alternating slashers
Jump Rope
Sumo Deadlift High Pull
Walking Swings
Double Kettlebell Alternating Forward Lunge with shoulder press

Tricia ~ Hope your head is feeling better today!

Cindi ~ Now I feel better and not so weird!! Let me know how you like Turbo Fire.

Alisha ~ Enjoy your yoga today. It's totally cool to change your plans! :)

Lisa ~ What a strange turn of events. Poor Winston. I hope it all works out for him. I think you are right, you haven't heard the last of it.

Hope everyone has a great day!!!

Alisha - I kind of like "Hot & Sweaty" for a company name! Imagine all the different logo ideas!!! LOL! Sorry you had digestive issues last night - no fun! Yoga sounds like a good plan.

Lisa - That is so awful! It's like Winston's getting gumbied around! Poor baby! I hope they know what they're doing and he really does end up in a good home!

I don't mind weird or ugly shoes, just expensive ones, especially if they fit well!

Cindi - I can't believe even the Vibrams are uncomfortable! Darn it! I, too, hope your new podiatrist can come up with some good suggestions for footwear! You know you could always just convert to pure barefoot running! That would solve the problem since you don't heel strike with barefoot running. Just an idea . . .

Enjoy your new workout!

Jane - Bummer that you didn't get much of a swim in, but at least you got a workout done!

Thanks for all the well wishes! The headache is gone, but the right side of my upper back through my neck is still bothering me. I took 4 Advil liquid gels this morning and it still hurt! At least it had loosened up a little bit, though. It had better resolve because I have GS Chest and Tris tomorrow morning and I don't plan on missing it!

I'll check back in later tonight see what's going on, if anything.

Tricia- I hope that neck gets better soon. Sometimes sleeping flat without a pillow helps reset my neck (which reminds me I should do that once a week.) I know it feels really weird the first time, like you're going downhill (might be my butt:p) but it does help (only if you sleep on your back.)

Do you think Hot & Sweaty should be a fitness video company? I do!

Lisa- I feel like calling Winston the Wonder dog because you wonder whats going to happen next. We should make a comic strip and have him star as the main attraction.

Jane- How heavy is your kettlebell? Did it make you more lean throughout the mid section, just tighten you up or did you put on some muscle?

Cindi- Hows it going?

Today is Step Max. I would have gone on a jog but its trash day and I don't want to do Stinky Max.

Last night was my book club mtg. We were all a-twitter about the new Harry Potter Wizarding World at Universal in Orlando. I never intended to go back to FL, but now I have to go! Which is fine because there are wonderful gardens to take photographs of, I could spend months and not run out of floral subjects.

Hi ladies!

Last night I did Bob Harper's cardio workout. it was really hard - really. There were a couple sections where you are doing a lot of swings with a single weight - they used 10#. The moves looked like KB moves and make me whant to get a 10# bell now. I have 5# and a 15#.

Bad storms came through last night - some neigborhoods had funnel cloud sightings, downed trees, hail etc. Then I watched the radar off and on freaking out about the storms heading to Paul's campsite. They are ok but they did have to seek shelter for several hours and some tents were completely blown away. I really want Saturday morning to come soon so I can see him. At least today and tomorrow the weather is beautiful so I hope he's enjoying himself today and can get some extra sleep.

Jane - I assume your HR is up pretty high when you do your KB routines, right? Do you consider it a cardio workout or combined cardio and weights?

Tricia - Maybe if I put some moleskin right where the seam is they would be ok. I've thought about barefoot running entirely, I was also googling on running sandals yesterday. Nike Free might also be an option, they have a sock-like upper so no hard heel cup. I'll figure it out. The good news is I have a decent gait so I was wearing a neutral shoe anyway and don't need a stability shoe - that gives me more options.

Glad your headache is gone - Alisa makes a good point about the pillow. I sleep on my side but only with a very squishy flat pillow because I find my back feels better when my head is straight with my spine or slightly bent toward the bed.

Alisha - Hot and Sweaty Fitness - I like it! :) It seems like so long to wait for the next HP movie.

Hi Lisa!

Hi Everyone!

I'm hoping to get a 4 mile run in today. There is a 40% chance of rain today so who knows. Last night was beautiful even though the heat index was 102. It was very breezy.

Tricia ~ Hope you enjoyed GS Chest and Triceps. I love that one.

Alisha ~ I think Hot and Sweaty would make a great fitness video company!

I have lots of kettlebells in various sizes (in pounds) - 10, 14, 18, 25, 35.2, 44 and my sister just ordered me a 52.8 kb from Perform Better because they had free shipping. I have 2 kettlebells in 10, 14, 18 and 25. I use the heavy one 44 right now for swings only. It's feeling a bit light which is why I asked for the next size up. For the workout I did yesterday, I used 10 (double press/lunges), 25, 30 and 35.2 pounds. Kettlebells have definitely made me lean and have tighten up my mid section.

Cindi ~ I heard about your bad storms. I'm glad that everyone is safe and that Paul will have good weather until he comes home. I would have been freakin' out. I find that watching the radar is not always the best thing.

I consider kettlebells a cardio/weight workout unless I'm just working legs and then it's more of a weight workout. The workout we did yesterday involved more compound moves so my HR soared. My sister did not like doing jump rope so we did a super burpee instead. See below.

Hi Lisa!

Thanks Jane - so I have another question. What I noticed in Bob's workouts is that he has a lot of moves where you are down, then up - like the super burpee or just walk out, then back and jump, etc. One of the workouts you do some moves like a burbee, then pick up weights and go right into overhead presses.

That up and down/lower body-upper body stuff makes me very lightheaded. I've experienced the same thing with kettlebell workouts - I think the blood can't move from my legs to my head fast enough! I have low blood pressure but I'm wondering does that feeling go away if you keep wth this type of workout? Have you ever experienced that?

Hi ladies,
I did Bum Bum this morning and PUB last night. Then I renovated my strawberry bed and hauled 800# of mushroom compost so I'm calling it a day.

Cindi - That's scary about the storms. I'm glad everyone's okay but I'm sure you'll be happy to have everyone safely tucking in back home. I'm getting twitchy about storms myself lately. I used to love thunderstorms but my horse got hit by lightning two years ago and killed and after Nellie's grand adventure... I think I'm just over storms.

Alisha - I love listening to the Harry Potter books on tape. The theme park sounds like fun.

Tricia - I think Winston is doing okay, I think he has stayed in the same house this whole time even though people have been changing their minds. I just can't help worrying each time things sound like they are going to change. I would take him back in a heart beat but that is stressful too (for some reason 4 dogs is just one too many for me due to space, time, hands, etc). And I just worry about him winding up in a home that isn't perfect for him too...

Jane - Ooh, that's quite the kb collection. *Want* I do love my kbs but much prefer standing moves and still hate burpees. They made us do burpees back in gym when I was little and I hated them then and still hate them now.
