My dog was skunked last night!

And so was I. UGH!

We had to scrub him (and me) down with peroxide, baking soda, and dishwashing liquid. Please note that it was 20 degrees outside and I was waiting in fear to be attacked again, lol.

He still has a faint smell so I am taking him to the groomer's later, but I suspect he is going to be a bit odiferous for sometime. Anyone have experience with this?

Stinkily yours,
Marie
:)

PUUUUUU! Sorry, but I did have to LOL at this.:7 Never been skunked, but living in the mountain woods we have 2 skunks that visit regularly & I always fear they'll spray my DSs.

Hope you're warmer & a little less odiferous now.

I've heard that tomato juice is supposed to help (wash the dog in it, don't give it to him to drink!)

Marie!

My dogs frequently get "skunked"!! The peroxide, baking soda and dishwashing liquid is truly the only thing I've tried that really works! Of course there is still a slight lingering smell for a little while!

Hoping your day is a little sweeter smelling! ;-)

Ladies, thanks. My SO assures me he only has a lingering smell and I have none, but it's the only thing I can smell. I think I need to go rinse out my nostrils with the magic mixture... :p

I didn't know about using peroxide to get the smell out-- thank you sooo much! Our new golden retriever has been hit twice in the past month, and we can't get near him. My dad kept telling me to use tomato juice, but I don't know if the dog will stand being dunked in V8!

:p

L, you have to mix the peroxide with baking soda and dishwashing liquid (i.e., Joy). I found the mixture on the Internet, just google "get rid of skunk smell," lol. I was going to use tomato juice but this site said this was a better mixture.

He still has a bit of a smell but not nearly what he was, blech!

UGH...Marie I'm sorry to hear that!! My akita killed a skunk in my moms back yard once. But before my dog killed him he gave him a good squirt!! x( At first my mom thought it was his toy skunk, but then realized that he had a real one in his mouth!!:p

Fortunately I was out of town
:p But she used that baking soda mixture too. It worked pretty well, but the smell does linger for a little while.

Stay strong!!!:7

Marie,

Sounds like you need to give your dog a tomato juice bath. This works really well. My friend's dog contiously got sprayed by a skunk (you would think the dog would learn). He always used tomato juice to get the odor out.

Hope this helps.

Oh, I'm soo sorry!!! That's horrible! My friend's CAT got skunked. A dog is bad enough, but imagine trying to wash a cat in tomato juice?!?!

Myth Busters on Discovery channel had a show on this. They found that the Peroxide mix is really the best way to de-skunk anything (dog, cat, human...). Tomato juice does work, but there's a stronger odor that lingers longer. It was a funny show, especially as they could not get the skunk to spray.

Oh my goodness! This happened to me last year & both my dogs were skunked. Yikes. I was new in the area and didn't know "skunk season" was in full bloom. They came running inside and rolled on our carpet. My biggest bit of advice- there is a product at Petco (I'm sure other animal shops)that specifically gets out skunk smell. It was a life saver. The small lingered for at least a month. Best wishes with the de-skunking! Coleen

LOL I had to reply to this one, my dog never got skunked but our van did, well sort of, we were driving and drove by a skunk that looked dead on the side of the road, then next thing we new the inside of our van stunk for days! no matter how much deoderizer we used it stunk! took several days for the smell to leave LOL.

Just a reminder to everyone that skunks can carry the rabies virus. So whatever cleaning method you use when de-skunking your pet, be sure to wear rubber gloves, especially if you have any cuts, sores, on your hands, since the virus is transmitted through the rabid animal's saliva.

OMG, I am trying to imagine sending my SO to the store to buy several women's douches to de-skunk the dog! LOL! I am thinking he would kill me!

:)

Colleen, I don't know if you will see this but isn't it funny us viszla owners know about using womens douches to deskunk our dogs!
I posted that up a few. Garilee

Years ago, my golden retriever got sprayed on her forehead, right between the eyes. She saw the snunk and just trotted staight up to it's backside like it was our cat and blam, right between the eyes. It was late at night and I had to get up early the next morning, so all we could do was put her in the garage and try to remove the smell the next afternoon. We used tomatoe juice. Couldn't really wash her in it because it was on her face, so I just kept taking a sponge soaked in the juice and blotting and rubbing her head. It got rid of the smell, unless you put your face right next to hers. We considered ourselves very lucky since the spray had sat on her for so long before we could try to get it off.
