Maynard has a yeast infection.....

MAYNARDSMOM

:DIn his ear. He's had these before so I'm pretty sure that's what it is. I found some of the drops he used before & I'm hoping there's enough to clear it up so I can avoid another vet bill. I'm still paying for his eating disorder .
Does anyone have experience with this & know a home remedy?

Thanks all you animal lovers!! :D

Everyone does know Maynard is my lab not my son .....LOL

Tami,

Free vet consult here :p (hey, I owe you one for allaying my fears regarding my varicose sx tomorrow, so we're even, lol)

Labs = yeast infections in ears...seriously, they are the most common breed I see them in. Add Goldens and Cockers in there too, but Labs have it the worst. Anatomy plays a role - as does moisture. The best thing to do is get a high quality cleaner and clean the heck out of those at least 2x weekly. We have one called Epi-Otic Advanced that I really like. That being said, I don't know if cleaning itself is going to fix it completely. Some will a home remedy of 50:50 white vinegar and water which does acidify the canal and make the environment less "yeast friendly" but sometimes you just have to get another tube of medicine. Can you call your vet and see if they'll just get you another tube? I'll do that a lot without seeing the pet if they are regulars and get otitis a lot. Call them and see.

For chronic, all year round issues, I start looking at allergies as the underlying cause. If it's an all year round issues, food allergies can play a role. Just thought I'd throw that out there in case you didn't know already.

I probably wasn't much help - sorry!

Heidi

Thanks Heidi!!! You were alot of help! He doesn't get them often really. Thelast one he had was when I took him to another vet so I know the current vet wouldn ot be kind enough to just give me the meds. They are great & know their stuff but not much for cuttign breaks :(. I'm going to keep giving the ear stuff & hope there is enough. It does seem to look better today to me, not so red or inflamed looking. Of course he sees me coming with the bottle & he bolts! Such a baby.
I have ear solution but I need to better about using it!! I'll also try the vinegar solution. Funny, when we had the puppies (Maynards babies) a number of them I had to stay right on about there ears as they got older.

Thanks again & I'll keep you in my prayers today!! Good luck!

Hi Tami,

Our chocolate lab puppy got "yeasty" when I first gave him a bath and didn't realize the ears weren't supposed to be washed out! The solution that Heidi mentioned is wonderful! I use it every 2 wks to keep things good and fresh and it is very effective. I think the important thing is to use it with regularity and you will see ongoing results.
Sherman doesn't like it at first, but then he just oohs and ahhs when I rub it in!

P.S. I did get the Furminator last week and it is fantastic! Thank you for calming my nerves on that purchase!

My poor little doggie Montana lives with yeast infections in his ears. I keep them clean and give him drops almost daily, but they are never 100%. We've changed his diet, our laundry detergent, etc. trying to find out if it is an allergy or what. I'll have to give the vinegar solution a try. I'm at my wit's end with the poor guy and we've spent thousands at the vet trying to clear this up - antibiotics, prednisone, you name it, he's been on it. :( Hope Maynard's clears up soon!

It's not a home remedy but I got a ear cleaning kit at Petsmart and it seems to help in preventing this. I have a Jack Russel and he had three yeast infections in his ear last year and has been better since I started using this, and this may sound gross but since this is a yeast infection I actually wondered if you could use a over the counter yeast treatment (for humans) but I have not tried this! But it would be a lot cheaper than a trip to the vet!

I previously had a yellow lab and he got ear infections all the time. Of course, that was partly due to the fact that he was swimming in the Potomac River all the time. Keeping his ears clean helped as did drying them after he came out of the water, but our vet also was very good about just supplying meds without requiring a checkup. I used to stock up on tubes of the medicine for a number of years because we went through quite a bit of it. As he got older and didn't go swimming as much, the infections subsided. It would be great if you could get Maynard used to getting his ears cleaned (love on him while you do it--most labs just suck up any kind of attention).

Good luck.
~Michelle
