Lift, Move & Restore Update…10/28/24

I maybe in the minority, but I just grateful that Cathe still produces DVD’s. Recently I had to make some financial decisions about my many online subscriptions, I was paying too much. So I cancelled all but 2 services, even my gym membership. I just don’t use them as I once thought and it’s a waste of money. It got me to thinking, I don’t own any of the previous exercise programs. And these services can disappear for any reason at any moment. So I decided to use what I already own, just restarted STS. Cathe was ahead of her time, now that “recompostion” of the body is trending. However I do understand everyone frustration with the lack of communication, there is something not right about the delays that we will never be privy of. Will I purchase any future DVDS, yes. I probably won’t preorder. Paying in advance for a product with no idea of when you receive them, just doesn’t sit well with me anymore, even though we can cancel at anytime. I just hope Cathe continues to produce DVDS, but I got a feeling this maybe her last one. The frustration is probably not worth it, sense most people are using streaming services.
I won‘t buy DVDs now, for a lot of reasons, although there is much I like about the technology. But I buy downloads. I won’t use a streaming service for exercise, unless It is free. Like you say, one day here, next day gone, nothing to show for your money. I have almost all of Cathe’s videos, on DVD or as downloads. I wasn’t planning on buying her series this year, as I already have more than I can use in a year. The series is unique enough to get me to buy it. But I purchased downloads, which take no space and work very well for me.

That's my understanding - but the current dvd downloads do have chapter points, so you can skip forward or back easily (LIVES don't have chapters). No premixes though.

If I'm wrong, please correct.
Downloads do not have the same chapters as the DVDs. And no premixes. They do have the chapter points, as I can see on software like Handbrake, so it is possible to make premixes if you are technically inclined. If I want to skip a section, I fast forward through the section, no easy way like DVDs have. I left DVDs for STS 2, for many reasons. I rarely use premixes on weightlifting workouts. I like working straight through. I do use premixes on cardio workouts, occasionally. So far, I have been comfortable with the downloads. Storage space also became an issue. I use thumb drives, and it’s so easy! I can use my dvd player and remote, which is very nice. Must admit that I am not a fan of Roku remotes. I recently bought DVDs on a sale, and I am pleased with them as well. would I like all downloads? No. But I have no space for more DVds, and am pleased that the new series can be put on the thumb drive with all the other downloads. Too bad Cathe can’t sell the DVD format on a thumb drive. That would be the best of both worlds. I guess On Demand is very much like that, but I don’t like paying over and over again for the same material, which is how I view On Demand. If Cathe follows others and goes all streaming, I will be fine with my almost complete Cathe collection, DVD and downloads.

I agree with vivbc, downloads do have chapter points, however, it may depend on the
device you are using to be able to access them. Unless it has changed, and that's
entirely possible, Apple IOS does show the chapters. For example, years (and I mean years) ago, when I would purchase & download a workout to the main computer I used
to have, I would then transfer it from there to my ipod thru Itunes. Then the workout
on the ipod would show the chapters on the video. On the player screen, there was
a little "chapters" button, and if you clicked on that, it would take you to a chapter
menu that listed each chapter, by name, time, etc. and if you clicked on a particular
chapter, then it would immediately switch to it. If I remember correctly, if you played
the download thru your Itunes library on the main computer, it would also have the
chapter points button and worked basically the same way. But, just reading the
instructions on how to download a workout directly on IOS 13 on an ipad, etc on
Cathe's download page, it appears that chapters won't show up automatically like
they used to, and there is an additional step and something else to download to
get it to work. Kind of confusing, I think. Things used to be so much easier, even
for a "tech dummy" like me! :)

The point about digital streaming subscriptions being pretty sketchy is what makes me think at times about buying the DVDs although I have streaming. I've only been using streaming for about a year now - I do like that it's introduced me to a lot of workouts of hers that I never purchased as DVDs - it's a good way to trial out stuff to decide if I want to make purchases of hard copies.

LIke, if I decide to drop my streaming sub, I'll likely purchase the Step Boss series, as an example, since I've come to find I really enjoy it, but for whatever reason never felt I wanted to purchase it when it first came out.

Anyway, I watched a YouTube video a few weeks ago by a guy talking about the pitfalls of other "streaming" type subscriptions - his was about Kindle and purchasing digital books. Those companies actually have the clout to cancel your subscription or ban you (for payment disputes, etc.), and in-so-doing, you lose your entire purchase history from your device.

I liken it to buying a DVD from Wal-Mart or something and then having them suddenly come to your home and take it away from you for one erroneous reason or another (and this isn't a repo scenario - you've bought and paid for it 100%, yet still they take it away from you.)

Sorry, going off on a tangent here.

Thanks for highlighting this aspect for future reference. The woman who blogs on "Too Lazy for the Gym" (I don't know her name here on the forum -sorry; but she has a great site with detailed reviews of various workouts & instructors) does/did this with Cathe LIVE where she subscribes for a bit to try various CL before she purchases the download. I think it's a smart way to try out new workouts before purchasing.

I'm exploring video-editing software at the moment. If anyone can recommend one to check out, I'd appreciate it. I might see if I can add some chapter points to some CLs I've downloaded. Thanks

There's a discussion of software on this Forum. Go to cathe downloads forum, then go to "where is the workout blender for download users," and then read comments by mandarinfish.
I use Handbrake, which gives me the chapters in separated form. To add a stretch to a bonus that is enough. When I need to get fancier, I use Capcut to put them together. Both are free and simple to use.

Thanks so much! I was exploring the software that came bundled on my laptop. It works but is limited. I'll look into these also.

I see it as paying for the same thing repeatedly. As I have 95% of Cathe's available workouts, I'd be silly to pay for them again.
