Lent

Do you usually give anything up? I'm not religious at all, but I always use the Lenten period to challenge myself to give up something. Usually it's some kind of food, like cookies, or sweets. This year I'm giving up all the things my SO thinks I can't }(

I always give up something. Almost every year it is soft drink because it is a big addiction for me. It is always a challenge for me to get through it, but somehow I manage.

I'm not religious either, but I use Lent to give up meat, except fish - and that is only occasionally (the Catholic version of being vegetarian).

Nope, I never bother. A few of us were talking about this at work yesterday though. One colleague said it's not just about sacrifice or giving something up - it's also an opportunity to challenge yourself to do something more. Lift heavier, run further... or maybe volunteer in the community, whatever.

I do try to give up something (taught as a kid to "sacrifice" something so it kind of stays with you). Because I grew up Catholic we never ate meat on Fridays during Lent, and I still don't - but that seems kind of meaningless now since I'd don't consider it a sacrifice. I think I prefer a serving of salmon or a plate of shrimp over meat anyway!

"Hey Shelley, I thought we were giving up misery for Lent."

Robin, we are. That's one of the things Chris doesn't think I can give up:p

You can also add something during the Lenten Season. I usually don't give up anything though. I don't know what I'll add, perhaps finally getting around to give something to Goodwill.

I like the way you think! ;)

I've only been observing Lent for a couple years (I'm Baptist turned Episcopalian) but I like the idea of giving something up. Usually I give up something that is a sort of time-waster and try to use the time saved more valuably. Last year I gave up shopping (except for groceries) which was TOUGH, and I might try that again. It certainly made me think about how materialistic I am.

Are there any fun ones? }( :)
