KPC vs. KM

I have KPC and love it! I want to expand my kickboxing library, but I have heard mixed reviews on KM and was just wondering what others thought.
What does KM offer that KPC doesn't?
Are the drills and punching/kicking combos the same, and how are they different?
Which do you like better and why?

Thanks in advance for all the feedback, everyone!
:)

I LOVE KPC!
I'm getting rid of KM after one go-through.
I like kickboxing workouts that truly feel like kickboxing, and give me high intensity without a lot of high impact. KPC fit the bill.
KM didn't.

The first part of KM, with kickboxing combos, was not very intense, IMO, even using 1# weighted gloves. There were quite a few pivot moves, which to me seemed to add complexity while taking away from intensity. This section was also too short, IMO.

The second part of KM was full of high impact, not-very-kicboxy moves, like air jacks, lots of regular jacks (ad nauseum!), tuck jumps, etc.

I didn't even get to the last part, but I think I would like it if it were attached to a workout more like KPC.

I was very disappointed in KM, because I was hoping Cathe would continue in the direction of KPC, giving us a high intensity kickbox workout with mostly kickbox-specific moves and minimum high impact.
(One good thing about KM: Cathe's form has improved even over KPC--though Jai still punches low!)

I agree with Kathryn completely.

I too am disappointed in the disjointedness of KM as a kickbox workout. The three sections simply do not hang together to form a whole. What you get instead is what Kathryn described: here's your kickbox (short section), here's a massive heart bustin' cardio session such as can be found on many Cathe workouts, and now here's some leg drills. The kickbox flavour is not maintained throughout.

It is possible to create a dynamic kickbox workout where the cardio training comes from the intensity of the kickbox moves and cathe proved this with KPC. So, how come she couldn't or didn't do it again? KM does not deserve the title of kick MAX, there's just too little real kicking in it.

KPC is a stunner. A fabulous example of how creative and intense you can really get with kickboxing. Buy it.

Now, some people will rave about KM and that's fine, but in my opinion what it is best suited for is ussing the different sections through the DVD chapters tool as add-ons to other workouts. The cardio heart bustin' section can be used to up your calorie burn any day of the week if tagged on to your cardio mish-mosh of the day. That's the whole point: it is so un-kickboxy and so generic it can be tagged on anywhere. Similarly, you could add on the first, actual kickbox section to the end of CTX kickbox in order to extend the CTX w/o, which is rather short and sweet IMHO. Lastly, the leg drills can be used at any time that you want additional leg shaping and where legs are the focus of the day.

KPC works as a w/o. KM works better as a series of "add-ons".

Many will disagree with Kathryn and me: whatever! There's more than one perspective to everything.....

Kathryn and Clare:

I totally agree about KM. I love KPC but KM just isnt very fun nor is it very cardiovascular. Just wanted to let you your not the only ones.

I have to agree too.

I was so looking forward to this w/o but just didn't feel there was enough kickboxing to call it a kick boxing w/o.

I have sold my KM and have ordered KPC (on everyone's recommendation).

I agree with the others here. I tend to break KM up as add ons. I think there is some good drills for balance training? More on form? It would have been a good starter workout for someone new to kickboxing. I like to do the lower intensity kickboxing segment as my warm up and then do KPC, the lower drills I feel go with a lower body workout day, the high intensity stuff can go on a high intensity cardio day. If I do it as is I feel like something is not quite right. Still I am glad I have it. I love KPC that is my fav Cathe kickboxing workout.

I agree with the others that KM is not as good as KPC for the reasons they listed. With better thought-out premixes, this workout could have been a gem.

That said, I am not sorry I have it for several reasons:

- Cathe's form is better than ever and I feel I learn a lot by watching her and the crew.
- As mentioned, the three sections make great add-ons.
- The leg drills have helped me improve my form. Because of them, the difference between a roundhouse and a sidekick finally clicked with me and my form has improved on both.
- The lower intensity of the combos has allowed me to concentrate more and has thus also helped improve my form.
- The workout as produced is still worth doing, especially if you do the high impact challenge segment before the combos in order to keep your heart rate elevated.
- As much as I like KPC, I reach for KM because it's something different.

KPC is far superior to KM for all the reasons given by others. One additional reason for me: the high impact intensity blasts in KM are murderous for my knees. There's just enough impact in KPC for this old lady to handle without excess damage.

I completely agree with everything that has been posted. KM is definitely not "hardcore" material. I expected pure kickboxing or kickboxing with a smidgen of high-intensity cardio interspersed in the combos or drills, as is Cathe's style, but such isn't the case. I felt I got an IMAX type of workout with a long kickbox segment followed by a long blast. I don't mind having it, however, since I can use it to mix and match with my other workouts. I love the warm-up in KM and find it's perfect to use that and the KM combos with those in KPC.

I love KPC and had high hopes for Kick Max....Hated It, Sold It. I really wish that Cathe would make another kickbox workout in the vain of KPC. The ultimate Cathe DVD fantasy for me would be a duo of:"Kickbox,For Real and Low Max 2" ;-)

Yes, KM is very different from KPC but tbat is one of the reasons I like it. Not that I don't like KPC (I love it) but I like variety. Like the others, I tend to break apart this workout as add ons. I like the combos section to help loosen me up and work on my balance. I don't have joint problems and can do high impact till the cows come home with no problems ad so I lke the blast section, even though its not kickbox. I absolutely love the leg drill section but only use that as an add on to floor work, standing legs with ankle weight work or before a serious lower body stretch.

I have to say I like KM because it is different than KPC. Cathe could've have done somthing more similar to KPC and I would've liked that too. I like KM because of the leg drills and I don't mind the cardio blast to shake it up and stop all the kicking and punching for a minute. So you could get both and mix and match things and get a really good workout.

I agree with Kathryn and Clare. KM is not as good as a workout, not as much kickboxing, too much high impact, but the three sections work well as add-ons. On the other hand I love KPC, it is one of the best workouts ever, and I love the abs routine too. I did it yesterday after doing Legs and Glutes.

The ultimate Cathe DVD fantasy
>for me would be a duo of:"Kickbox,For Real and Low Max 2" ;-)
>

Can I join in that fantasy? LOL!
What a great combo on 1 DVD, with some premixes that combine segments from both!

Kathyrn, you have taken the fantasy DVD to the next level. I hadn't thought about the premixes! How fabulous would that be :)

Thank you guys so much for helping me out! I think I will use my $$$ on something another Cathe DVD. I am still waiting for Rythtmic Step + to get outta backorder, whenever that may be......

As a total workout, I prefer KPC, but I love the KM bootcamp challange premix and like several others who posted I like the 3 separate sections as add-ons.

For example, for a fairly low impact workout, I have paired the kick/punch drills from both KPC and KM. I like pairing the GS floor section with the KM leg conditioning drills. And I love the KM boot camp challenge premix followed by the Low Max blast only premix.

I have yet to do KM as produced. I like its separate parts, but it just doesn't appeal to me as a total workout.

I'm glad I bought it.

to me, kpc is more kick box style and km has more jumping in it. cardio kicks-my favorite-has both. it is nice to have a variety. i do kpc one week,km another, and ck.

I guess I'm in the minority. I enjoy Kick Max and find it extremely challenging. I find it more challenging than KP&C. I enjoy the intensity blasts and the leg drills are absolutely killer. I don't know if I'm ever going to be able to keep my leg where it's supposed to be, LOL! But, then, that's the challenge!

I think Cathe was trying to give us something a bit different than KP&C and Cardio Kicks for variety and she certainly did that!
