Is there anyone who works out at home

WITHOUT a DVD in the TV? Just curious--I know Debbie (FitnessFreak) does, I'm wondering who else. I have enough weights to do almost my entire UB routine, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I just can't. I've tried & it's numbed my mind. It is so freakin boring trying to train at home vs. the gym. I can't even explain why--I have my mp3 player at the gym & don't socialize much--maybe it's something about having that wide open space & a closed captioned TV for betw. sets & the occasional person to chat with, not to mention another reason to spend money on cute clothes. ;)

So who else?

I work out at home -- I'd say 75% of the time I don't use a DVD. I did a lot of the STS workous without the DVD, just using the book as a guide.

It took some getting use to but I'm totally into it now. I crank whatever music I'm listening to way up and just do it.

I've never worked out in a gym so I don't have that to compare it to - the hardest thing for me was to train myself to take my time, which is easier if Cathe (or some one else via DVD) is the example. But I've got it down now and like it alot.

Unless I'm doing a circuit I do strength at home on my own, no dvd. I do use the P90x and Xplus exercise sheets, to keep track, but other than that I just use my ipod, chat with DH, or put the TV on.

I did a 5x5 routine at home. Believe me there was no time to get bored when you are lifitng like that. All of my focus and energy was geared toward psyching myself up for the next set. I couldn't do it forever. I just like working out with DVDs. I've never joined a gym. I just don't want to have to get ready, drive somewhere, workout and come back home. Just not my cup of tea.

Laura I hear ya. This was such a hard concept for me to get used to when I started doing Crossfit but I just put the numbers and WOD in my head and just push the timer on my watch and go. It still is harder for me to motivate to do them though, . putting a DVD is sooooo easier. If I don't have a DVD though I must have music.

When I started working out I ALWAYS used a DVD, couldn't do it w/o one. However, a few months ago I started using kettlebells and then I started going a personal trainer for KBs - I LOVE it. Anyhow, for me personally, I find that I concentrate so much more and I really "feel" the workout when I'm not watching a DVD. I don't think I'll ever go back to watching a DVD while working out, now it seems so distracting.

Laura, it's not boring if you blast your favorite music. Actually, I love working out on my own at home then with a DVD workout. Once you get away from that it's really hard to go back to DVD workouts. I'm doing that right now and even though I'm enjoying the break and using Cathe's weight workouts, I miss being able to listen to my own music and doing my own thing.

I guess it's just a preference, if you don't like doing it, you don't like doing it.

Yeah, I tried the music thing too. I have a boom box & a bunch of DVDs down there. Put them there when I got the heavy bag thinking I'd jam on that bag for 30 minutes or so once or twice a week. That didn't last very long. LOL!

There were a couple of times I just didn't feel like going to the gym, so I tried some shoulders & triceps. I made it through, but OMG I thought I was gonna take a nap right in the middle of the routine.

The only time I can do it is when I have a new step routine to learn, like Amy's or Tracey's, so at least I have something to focus on during breaks betw. sets.

Most of my workouts now are without a dvd or music. I do lots of kettlebell and crossfit workouts and I do most of them outside. Sometimes I workout with my sister and sometimes I'm alone. It doesn't really bother me. I have the birds and squirrels for company.

I wouldn't say it bothers me, it just doesn't inspire me.

Jane, that's really cool your sis works out w/you! I wish my sis lived closer. Right now all we can do is trade DVDs. ;)

I always work out at home, and I am currently working through a non-DVD circuit rotation of my own making. It includes cardio as well as strength, in splits. The cardio is between each set, so there's no time to get bored. I sometimes feel the need to do that- create my own structure and challenge myself in a way that is all about my needs. I tend to go much harder on myself than a DVD would push me. I love creating workouts as much as I love creating rotations, so it's fun for me. I throw in a movie or watch the news, but nothing that I really really want to see, because it's mostly background noise. I have tons of DVD Cathe workouts that I haven't even tried yet, and I will be doing them in the near future, but for now, this is good.

Weight work at home without a DVD to do the counting? or arrange the exercises? and supply music?... What is this non-sense you speak of ??? ;)

Honestly, I've never tried. I'm not sure if I could motivate myself... I guess I have no desire to find out either, since I've invested the money in the DVDs to begin with I figure I might as well use them. :D YMMV

I haven't done that in a while, but I used to do a 20 minute routine that I worked up myself using exercises from a magazine, it consisted of chest, bi's, tri's, shoulder raises, lateral raises and front/back/side lunges. It was killer! I had serious doms, but it was also stuped, I did not know to let myself recover (I was just a teen, maybe 14 yo.)

Ok, back on topic, I don't really like to do it all by myself, cause I like the company of Cathe and the crew. Which is funny, cause I don't really like to talk in the gym. How am I supposed to hold a conversation if my intervals are 185 beats per minute? Or Sweat is pouring off me like I was a hose spigot left on? Honestly, at this point, I don't know that I would go back to a regular gym at all. I might take yoga, beginning ballet, spinning or aqua aerobics, but just to lift? Nope.

Need motivation

Hi!

i can't workout without the DVD. I like the extra motivation and being told what to do. When I try to workout on my own I feel like I;m doing things out of order or the wrong way. I like to keep it simple in my workouts and just do what I am told.
Although, my DVD's are the only time I ever just shutup and do what I am told! ;)

What Nico said. Both paragraphs.

When I had a Bowflex, I used to do a strength routine at home on my own. I would put in a music DVD (like DMB in concert or something). That was doable. Since I have really gotten into DVDs for strength training, I have sold my Bowflex and now work out exclusively to them - whether at home or at the gym.

I workout with my DH completely at home. All of our equipment is there and we enjoy it. I am turned off by the gym because of the lack of hygiene primarily. We have also found that working out at the gym is difficult because, around here, there are lines at ALL of the machines. We like the ability to move at our pace without sharing. We work out with DVDs, because we like to have the coaching experience. It is similar, for us, to having our own personal trainer/coach. Does that make us inferior? We don't think so...whatever works right? And by the responses above...we are definitely NOT alone! LOL :)
