Is 1 egg a day okay?

Whenever I am a preggo, I crave eggs. And not in a normal way...like if I don't have one in 30 seconds I explode in ravenous hunger. It is a really weird thing. So for lunch about everyday, I have one whole egg on a whole wheat english muffin. If I don't have an egg, I have a can of tuna (which I also have to limit during pregnancy)
So I am wondering, is one egg per day (or at least 5-6 days per week) alright for me? When I am not preggo, I always do whites, but I heard from a client that the yolk is great for the baby's brain. By the way, I eat the omega-3 eggs. Anyway, I just don't want to overdo it in the cholesterol dept. Thanks!

Hey Clarissa,

I've never read anything bad about having eggs when you're preggo unless they are raw. I can't imagine that they'd be bad--especially the yokes for the baby's brain.

No - I would NOT do raw! Ick!

I am just concerned that the cholesterol is high, and I know a lot of people on here are nutrition experts! Thanks!

The only time whole eggs are not good for you is if you have high chloresterol. If your levels are fine, eat eggs all you want. I usually have two a day. :)

From all that I've read on eggs, the yolks are not bad for you, when eaten in moderation. You would not want half a dozen/day! One a day is perfectly fine as long as you don't have cholesterol problems. Eggs are so beneficial. What I like to do is cook one regular egg and add egg whites to that. I say - eat away!!!

I usually add egg beaters instead of egg whites. I bet the egg whites taste better. :p

Egg whites may have all the protein, but it's the yolks that are rich in antioxidants. I never throw the yolks away! I eat several eggs a week and I ALWAYS eat the yolks. ;)

I get Horizon brand egg whites. Not even sure what is in egg beaters. I try to eat eggs that come from humanely treated, and well fed, chickens.

Laura - you should try the egg whites...they are yummy! They are on my list for a quick trip to the store today.

Not even sure what is in egg beaters.

I was wondering that myself. Here's what I found online:

"Egg Beaters is made with real eggs and is composed of egg whites separated from their yolks and fortified with vitamins and other nutrients. Xantham gumguar gum are also added as emulsifiers and thickeners. By eliminating the yolk, Egg Beaters has significantly fewer calories than whole eggs and has no fat or cholesterol. " blah, blah... that's the general gist though.

I started eating them after my dad got sick last spring--heart problems--it's one of the things his nutritionist recommended. That said, they don't cook up as well as real eggs--no fluff! I'll def. be trying the egg whites!

I don't care for the egg beaters to eat scrambled or as an omlet, maybe it's an aquired taste. I do like to use them for cooking/baking though.

I eat 3 hard-cooked egg whites every single day. Sometimes 6 a day! With a bowl of oatmeal w/ 1Tablespoon ground flax, 3 egg whites rounds out that meal and fills me up! I sometimes crave egg salad in the afternoon and will mix 1T l/f Miracle Whip with the egg whites and eat on a whole grain something-or-other. YUMMY!

I think egg beaters have a very unusual odor to them, so I am turned off by them. I buy Egglands best eggs. YUM

Clarissa:

Gayle, Fitnessfreak and Miss Lee have it right. Eat the whole egg, 2 a day is just fine. They are fine even when you are not pregnant, but since you are, you need to think high nutrition for you and the baby. Fat is an essential part of the body's cells. You baby needs fat to line, among other things, all the nerve cells in his/her little body. Eating eggs is good for both of you, and necessary. All the essential nutrition is in the yolks, don't skip them. The ingredients list for eggbeaters should tell you all you need to know about them. Avoid. They do not fit into "clean eating" either. Yuck.

I love Egglands too...but I found one better: Land O Lakes eggs! WOW!

I agree, for some reason these are great eggs. I like getting the brown eggs with the extra Omega. I eat about 1-2 eggs a day. I love easy meals!

Not a weird thing...and very good for your baby. The folic acid and the protein are great. I ate at least one egg everyday when I was pregnant in the 2nd & 3rd trimester. It's very good for brain development. Certain kinds of fish too, but I can't recall which ones. Just watch the mercury. Eat your eggs and enjoy them!!! Eggs are good food.

Think I'll have a spinach and feta omelet for dinner. Yummmmmmmm
