I'll be passing on these new DVD's

Yay Olivia!

Olivia, I'm so glad to see you back! :) Your post makes me smile, because I love the fact that you're keeping an open mind about STS. An open mind generally, I think, is a great gift to give yourself. And for STS or any other fitness endeavor, your "get as informed as I can, then decide if I should try it" approach is a great one for ALL of us of any age.

And thank you for starting this thread! I've really enjoyed popping back in to read new entries, because everyone's posts turned out to be amazingly thought-provoking -- lots of differing opinions expressed so well and so respectfully to each other. I LOVE that!!! :)

RE: Yay Olivia!

1955 was a very nice year, girls, but 1956 ROCKED!! ;) :p :+ LOL!!

Olivia, I'll be 52 this month and I know what you're saying. I have always been an extremely cautious exerciser, because it's just my nature. I've been walking for cardio since I was in my twenties, and I find it very effective and I've never had an injury. But this year, for the first time, my knees started to hurt on the higher inclines! Yikes! And my lower back has always been a problem and is more so now. I asked Cathe about this and she was extremely helpful. She told me what I already kind of knew: I need to concentrate on building a strong core first and foremost before continuing with my weight training. So that's what I'm doing. I've come to LOVE the CoreMax DVD, and sometime in the next few weeks I hope to return to my beloved weight training, especially Muscle Max. It never even occurred to me that I might be too old and decrepit for STS. ;) The only reason I'm not purchasing it is that I am holding out for the audio version for the gym, because I really do prefer working out at the gym when possible.

I love these forums because there are so many of us old geezers here. :+ So come join us on our adventure into .... uh .... maturity. ;) It's been a fun, laughter-filled journey with the wonderful folks on these boards! :7

Well, Nancy, I hope I look like you when I'm 52! You look vibrant and healthy so your careful exercising has obviously worked for you!

RE: Yay Olivia!

So many of you inspired me and helped me think about my future health and fitness goals, so I have preordered, Yay!!!

I thought about it and I thought about how I can modify and yes, it is true, Cathe is the best out there when it comes to weights, I have worked out with Cathe from the ninties also, started out with 'Mega Step Blast'.

So ladies, I'm in! }(

Olivia

P.S. I need to change my subject line because I'm not passing now, Cathe I hope your reading this!

RE: Yay Olivia!

Woohoo, Olivia! I'll be 50 this year and have been so inspired by this thread. Can't wait for STS to come out.

RE: Yay Olivia!

I"m almost 47, strong as an ox, but my joints are becoming a problem...so I may not go to 1 rep max and may modify...but I'll straggle along with this thing anyway - beings that we'll have to do it all and shake our buns when Chalean's comes out!

RE: Yay Olivia!

Yeah -- I'm glad you decided to stay with the Series. I've been watching the clips and I think they will be awesome. I can already see where I will be modifying, but that's okay. Too many times I have ordered workout videos (and believe me over the last 25 years I've ordered LOTS from different instructors) and it's very discouraging when you order one and it's not quite to your fitness level. With Cathe, I believe she's always trying to challenge you and that's what I love about her. She works very hard to give a great advanced workout. I know that some of her workouts are very long (sometimes I do them, sometimes I don't). The great thing is, as you know she offers so many great premixes that you don't have to do the whole thing at one time (I usually always break up workouts like Body Max 2, etc.). When she does high impact things like jump tucks, power scissors (my knees hate these!) or other high impact things, I just substitute and keep right on going. That's the great thing about working out with Cathe for so long (you've been working out with her about as long as I have!) is because we know so many other modifications that we can adjust to suit our needs. The only thing I see so far that intimidates me in the STS series are the paper plate workouts. I have carpet only so I'm not sure how that will work! But -- I think I remember something about this being addressed and there are probably modifications. I guess we'll see.

It'll all be great! Good luck!

RE: Yay Olivia!

I've been watching this thred for some time with interest. I am 43, and have not as yet noticed a great change in my weight training ability. However, cardio? Thats a different matter alltogether. I will huff and puff and pant, sweat and go very red and then run out of steam, and then have a little sit, with the cardio. I have no injuries to consider I am hoping to keep going with the weights for a long long time to come.(Cardio too)

But I do struggle to lift the heavy bar over my head once I have fininshed the set of squats/lunges whatever, (I don't have to room for a squat rack) I workout at home, and most of the time when its just me and the kids -no-one to spot me. So that is a consideration for me re sts.

When you gals are saying modifying, do you mean a different exercise altogether, or lighter in the weight, or skipping that part and move on to the next bit? I think that if you have to modify a lot then this series could just not be for you? Please no-one jump on the soap box. I am trying to say its a lot of money, when you are modifying all the way through a workout to suit injuries, age or weight. If those issues are not going anywhere then maybe STS isn't right for you at this time We all know our bodies and hopefully our limitations, I am probably totally wrong but it seems STS is all about pushing it a little further? If you can't do that then why do it?

RE: Yay Olivia!

About the paper plates and carpet. You can buy Gliding Discs for carpet. Walmart sells them for about 19-20 bucks. You can also get them on ebay. Just be sure you get the discs for carpet - not hardwood. I've also heard people mention that they buy the furniture moving discs. I can't speak to those - I have the Gliding Discs for hardwood floors and also used to use those at the gym. They are great and add a nice dimension to workouts.

RE: Yay Olivia!

My favorite word I've come to rely on as I've gotten older is MODIFY, MODIFY, MODIFY. It is a must. :)

RE: Yay Olivia!

I'm 41 1/2 and I love Cathe's strength training workouts the most (well, her kickboxing and bootcamps are pretty awesome too!) I see that I am getting stronger with each workout that I do. My goal is to never have any bone or muscle problems like my parents do!! I hope that with all the heavy lifting I do I will keep my bones and muscles healthy well into my 60s and 70s. But, one thing I have noticed is my energy level is way down. I take vitamins and eat healthy but I still feel like I could sleep all day. sometimes I blow off the cardio workouts and just do the weight workouts but I feel guilty not doing any cardio at all. anyone else have this problem? I thought working out gave you all kinds of energy. its the opposite for me! I have been backing off on my workouts thinking was was overtraining but I still don't feel quite right. Also, I am 5'6 and weigh around 185. I want to lose around 25 pounds and am worried that the lack of cardio is going to keep me from ever reaching that goal!!!!
Anyway, just wondering if anyone else my age (or older) is having a similar problem or have had it in the past and how you handled it.
Thanks! You are all very inspiring by the way.

Theresa

RE: Yay Olivia!

I think age is a factor with the tiredness. I'll be 41 in April, and I'm tired all the time. Going through perimenopause is probably a big factor for me.

RE: Yay Olivia!

oh crap. i never even thought of menopause. what's perimenopause? now i'm really depressed. how do you fix it?????? My energy level is like nil.

RE: Yay Olivia!

Yes Theresa! I'm hearing you! You said it so very much better than I. What Therese said, (she put it better than I did in my post) I still wonder about the amount of modifying going on here too.

Andrea

Hi Olivia--I'm 40 this year, with lousy joints, but I agree with all the ladies who say MODIFY, MODIFY, MODIFY. I'm really excited about STS, because the weight I lift is totally dependent on my 1 rep max and not on anything else. Some of the blog photos look too scary for my knees, but I'll just find something to substitute that works for my body. The longer I work out and the longer I hang around here, the more ideas I get for substitutions.

Anyway--good for you (and all the other ladies working out in their 40's, 50's and 60's and beyond) for being active all through life--you are an inspiration to me.

Maggie:)

RE: Yay Olivia!

Hey - Thanks! You know what's funny, as tired as I am I still have trouble sleeping. I can fall asleep when I put my kids to bed and I'm sitting on the floor waiting for them to fall asleep so I can sneak out but as soon as I go to bed my mind is going a mile a minute and I can't relax! so I started taking melatonin at night before bed and it seems to be helping me. or it could be all in my head! So during the day I take vitamins and supplements to give me energy and then at night the melatonin. My husband thinks I'm a nut.

Now last night I did GS Back shoulders and biceps and I felt pretty good. I still did not do any cardio because it was late and that tape is almost an hour long. But I plan on doing cardio tonight and no weights.

I do modify some the high impact workouts because I am just not coordinated enough to do them. Also some of the more tricky step workouts. I just find another move that suits me. Modifying doesn't bother me one bit. As long as I am doing something that gets my heart rate up then I figure I'm fine.

I really really hope that I am still able to do Cathe's bootcamps and step workouts when I am in my 50s and 60s. I never want to be sedentary and sick like my Mom and my mother in law. I can't imagine not being able to do what I do. Its just not an option - ever!!!!

HAVER A GREAT WEEKEND AND A BLESSED EASTER!!!!!
