If you won the lotto

Pay off debt and my house and then buy several acres of farmland and make it a sanctuary for abandoned and abused Australian Shepherds and Border Collies and build a green/eco-friendly house on it with my own veggie garden, sheep, goats, ducks ........

Save money for my kids' education. Spend more time with my kids because the I won't have to work 12 to 15 hours anymore.

Form a non-profit organization dedicated to the education of cancer patients by giving them information and choices, help with day-to-day challenges of people going through cancer treatment and fund alternative cancer research.

Buy houses of people who are facing foreclosure due to hardships like lost jobs, illness or divorce and let them buy the house back after they get back on their feet (I currently do valuations for banks and mortgage companies for their foreclosures, short sales and loan modification. The stories of some people are just heart breaking and the flippin' lender won't do a thing and just forecloses :mad::mad:)

Put the rest in investments and a trust fund for my kids. Be happy and never have to worry again that my kids, my dogs and I may end up homeless.

I wouldn't change much, but I sure would have a new attitude about it.
I would hire a personal pilates trainer and have lots of lasar hair removal.

I would pay off my house and bills and my parents and sister's houses too. With what I had left, I would put aside good chunks for the kids and then put the rest in some kind of savings. I doubt there would be all that much left though, after taxes and paying off all those mortgages. If I did have some extra, I'd buy a new car (with 4 wheel drive) and probably build on to our house and upgrade some things. I wouldn't change much about how I live though.

buy a townhouse in NYC, gut it and renovate it to my liking. With rooftop garden/patio. One that is steps away from Central Park. Oh yes, I love NYC that much. I am single and don't want to be living on a huge lot or in a huge house in some too quiet place where I would be very lonely.

I would also buy some of the broken down buildings in NYC and turn them into affordable housing. I might even just get into renovating old buildings or historical buildings as a hobby.

I would travel a lot, stay in private villas, quaint villages or luxury hotels (my choice)

I would, of course, make sure my closest family and closest friends are taken care of. That's a very short list by the way, but I'm sure family that have never picked up the phone to say boo, will be calling.

I would be able to buy the best type of any food. The whole organic grass fed locally made stuff. That excites me more than shopping for clothes and shoes.

The best part of it is that I will have all this money and not have to worry about impressing anyone. A lot of millionaires who worked for their money spend a lot of time being nice to people they don't like so they can have "connections".

I've always wanted to start a scholarship fund.

Travel, travel, travel. Go see all the live music I want, anywhere, anytime. Buy a place in Ocracoke. Give to some charities and friends and family. Oh, and have a big-ass party!!!:p:p

I wouldn't tell my family or friends either, . . does that make me mean?

No, but how would you explain supporting yourself, buying stuff yet not working?

I would give the closest ones a little something and tell them not to ask me for anymore - make it last. And I would mean it and stand by it.

I wouldn't tell my family or friends either, . . does that make me mean?

I wouldn't tell most either becuase I know ecactly what would happen. My current employer would hound me to donate money to its Foundation (no thank you!) and my "family" would all suddenly come out of the woodwork and go on and on about how great being part of a family is:rolleyes:!

1. Quit. :)
2. Find a house with property in AK and move.
3. Live out my life in peace and quiet with my furry babies and DH
4. Adopt as many doggies as I could before I pass on
5. Share my riches as I see fit. :)

  • Go back to school full time to get my MBA
  • Get a MODEST house in a nice area
  • Pay off my car loan
  • Pay off my parents' mortgage so my dad can finally retire
  • Go to Italy for a few weeks

I wouldn't tell friends or family about the winnings either. There is nothing I can't stand more than people who hound you for money once they smell it on you. I would also quit my current job ASAP!!!! I'd look for another one of course but I'd have enough money to live off of until that time comes.

Travel the world, buy a flat in London and two houses (one in France for the cooler months and one in Scotland or Ireland for the warmer months). I was going to say more but I've probably already blown through the money by the time I do all that.

I have to say this is a very nice thread and shows how sweet most of us are (except me since my answer was totally self-centered :p).

"Buy a cabin for my DH on the au Sable River in Michigan and buy a home in the Virgin islands for the winter." -Baylian (I don't know how to do the quote thing).

I live in Grayling and it is truly a beautiful river. Is your DH a fly fisherman? I am sure you could get a good deal these days. :)

1. Buy a ranch in the mountains of Montana.
2. Pay off all of my bills.
3. Buy my mom a new house.
4. Travel to all the really cool cities here in the U.S. that I have not been to.

I am not sure I would quit my profession. I do like it and have a hard time focusing on things/getting things done without structure. I am wierd like that. :)

I'd make sure my daughter was taken care of -- college, trust fund, whatever...

Then I'd travel. Settle in someplace warm, but take off around the world and visit all the places you want to see before you die. I'd wait until my daughter was old enough to go with me, so all that money will probably earn a good sum of interest before we take off! :)

Oh, and I'd participate in every Cathe pre-sale... I do that anyway...

Let's see...

After I finished paying half of it in taxes...

I'd do the boring stuff: Pay off the mortgages, tuition for the kids, put my son back in speech therapy, replace DH's 10-year-old car, replace our leaky roof, put my sibs' kids through college, pay off parents' mortgage, donate to my church....

Gee, would there be anything left? I don't need anything, really. Just a new battery for my car -- it keeps dying on me!

No, but how would you explain supporting yourself, buying stuff yet not working?

I would give the closest ones a little something and tell them not to ask me for anymore - make it last. And I would mean it and stand by it.

I'd live modestly and I'm old enough to be able to claim I'm living off investments and retirement.

I'd also donate to many charities, but anonymously. And I'd retain a lawyer!

1. buy a house, not ranch style
2. pay the kids' college tuition and send them to the best schools
3. pay for my husband to go back and train for the job he wants to do rather than having him slaving away anymore at a job he loathes
4. pay for a PhD in second language acquisition for me so I can run the Spanish language department at a university
5. outfit a home gym!
6. donate huge wads of cash to environmental causes
