How sugar hurts your health!

Thanks for posting this. I think I may print it out and use it to remind myself why I need to stay away from sugar.

Ditto on knowing #58 ! ;)

Thanks for posting this.
Gosh, sugar is indeed the devil in anyone's diet!

Reminds me of Jack Lalanne. He said sugar changed his personality completely, made him real mean.
I know it causes depression in me. I get depressed shortly after eating it. What's bad is that sugar is hidden in so many foods under different alias.

I am going to definately look at this. I know for me when I overindulge in the sweet stuff I get headaches. You would think I would learn!! Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for the link, Reese.

I knew a lot of these (but maybe forgot!), but some are new to me. I printed it out as a good reminder for those times when willpower is low. (Too bad it's too huge to put on the fridge!)

Years ago, I read a book by William Dufty (?---he was involved with Gloria Swanson for many years) called "Sugar Blues." It must have been a very convincing argument against eating sugar, because, though I had just recently gone veggie--so it must have been 1976-77--and was making my way to a healthier diet, I was still a sugar hound, but I gave it up completely (for several weeks at least).

Funny anecdote : when I visited my grandmother during my 100% sugar-avoidance days, she wasn't so much concerned that I had become a vegetarian, but when I politely refused some cookies she made, she looked at me with astonishment and said, in a totally perplexed voice "You don't eat SUGAR?!" LOL!

(Sugar is in some ways like a powerful drug, it definitely causes chemical changes in the body. I remember reading a sci-fi novel by Anne McCaffery (dang, this prednisone I'm taking for poison ivy is great for stimulating memory recall! wish it weren't so tough on the body overall, or I'd be tempted to take it all the time!!) called "Dream Snake." It's set in a post-apocalyptic Earth. The main character is a healer who uses lo-tech healing methods, including specially-bred snakes. One method she uses for a patient in shock is to give them a dose of plain sugar.)

Kathryn,

I read (and still have I think) the Sugar Blues too. It also made a big impact on me when I read it about 12 years ago. Just like you I immediately gave up sugar. Since then I have had to give it up a few more times. It seems to slowly sneak back into my diet and gradually turns from an occasional treat to a full blown addiction again. I have to give it up entirely to shake the hold it has on me.

The story about your grandmother is too funny! I have also found people to be completely shocked (and even troubled lol) to know I have given up sugar. Much more so than any particular diet I might try.

Sugar makes me a "sweeter" person, I always say, "A little sugar a day, keeps Tneah's monsters away!"

I believe everything is okay--in moderation of course.;)

I agree! I love sugar but I'm careful to limit how much I eat. The link that Reese provided is interesting, but I'm not gonna be giving up my sugar anytime soon. ;) :p

I'm not cutting sugar out completely either but I certainly have cut way back!!! What a difference it makes. Ya know, I feel so much better when I'm not overloaded witht he stuff.

I forwarded the web-site to many family members. The reply from my (overweight) sisiter-in-law was.

"Great information. Now can you pass the cookies"

They just don't get it. Very frustrating sometimes.

Yes, I believe in moderation as well. I pretty much eat the same exact thing every day and would probably go nuts if I couldn't have a sugar cheat sometime during the week. Funny thing is my fav cheat at the moment is cinnamon and honey roasted almonds. I may eat WAY too many of them in one sitting but I'm still getting my protein in there ;)

For the educated crowd I have a question. I would love to cut out sugar but find it impossible to do so. When you say you don't eat sugar do you mean you don't eat things like cottage cheese or organic raw peanut butter or fage greek yogurt. Each of those items has sugar listed on the label as either 1-5 g. per serving. I dont' each sugar intentionaly but I do consume it in the foods I eat. How do you cut out sugar altogther. Thanks for any information.

Yup, every year or so a food or complete food group is demonized. Heck, next thing we know, maybe someone will come out and say we did it all completely wrong and broccoli is now public enemy # 1.

I just think articles and reports like this make people go to extremes, trying to eliminate the poopooed food, inevitably failing, feeling bad, blaming it on themselves or their lack of will power and going down a vicious cycle that ends in obesity and yo-yo dieting for millions of Americans.

Instead of demonizing a food, why not change the way we look at food and the way we approach our health? Why not change our perceiption and realize that even the stuff that is "not so good" is fine, if eaten in moderation? Food is not an enemy — overeating is the enemy.

Ok, here is an example from my above question. I'm eating fage greek yogurt, with bluberries, sunflower seeds and wheat germ. Not only am I consuming sugar with the fage low and behold wheat germ has 1g of sugar. It would seem impossible for me to cut out sugar completely.

Kathryn and advice you can lend on how you cut it out of your diet. Thanks

Don't get me wrong I can see how you can cut out sugar with cookies, donuts and ect but in eveyday literaly healthy food there seems to be sugar.

Speaking for myself only here, I my no means have completely cut out sugar, that would very hard to do. I know what you mean, it's in alot of products that would surprise people. I watch my sugar intake, for me that means not having tons of sugary sweets. I don't mean that I NEVER have them, I do, just not often. My afternoon snack is my "treat" time. Today for example I had a packet of Southbeach dark choc covered soynuts - very good!!! & I'll have a serving of sugarfree icecream. Now yesterday moderation eluded me!! I made these sinful iced pumpkin cookies that I entered in our county fair (small town life at it's best). They are so good that I lost control & ate ...gulp....8 of them . Not exactly my best choice there. Let me tell ya, I felt like crap afterwards!!!
Just one of those things people should watch more than they do. IMO
