How many of you don't eat bread?

I am wondering how many of you don't eat any bread at all, including whole wheat. I got an Oxygen magazine at the store, something I don't usually read because it's a bit extreme. They had a lot of diets listed in the magazine and it was striking to me that it was all basically lean protein and vegetables. Very little complex carbs, I saw brown rice and oatmeal but tiny amounts (like 1/2 C for the entire day). And no fruit. Do any of you really eat like this or is it part of their "extreme"-ness? I can see cutting out refined carbs (I don't eat them), but why complex carbs? Just would like to hear your thoughts, mostly because I value all of your opinions more than a magazine!

I need complex carbs to stay "regular", :+ . So yes, I have tried the atkins no carb thing and was miserable. It's all about balance.

I eat some bread (sprouted whole grain), but not very much. One 'burger' bun a day, and often none at all.

There are some good reasons for avoiding grains, especially wheat.
Most grains are acidifying, and experiments have shown that cancer and other diseases thrive in acidic environments. Wheat is very high in gluten, and many people have gluten sensitivities (that they may not even be aware of).

Better are the 'pseudo-grains" (actually seeds more than grains): quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat.

On the other hand, I don't believe in cutting out fruits. They are so full of healthful antioxidants and phytonutrients.

I try to avoid anything with wheat, I'm one of those gluten sensitives. Some brown rice, but very rarely. I try to stick to fruits and veggies.

I don't really eat bread but that is more b/c I don't care for it that much in the first place. I also don't really eat pasta just b/c I'm not a fan of it either. I do like white/brown rice, oatmeal, high fiber wraps- I use those like I use bread & IMO are MUCH better!

However like someone said above, I LOVE fruit & eat it daily so carbs has nothing to do with why I choose what I do.

I say everything in moderation. I've "heard" that low carb diets work better for apple shaped people but not sure I buy that... I did my own version of a 'low carb' eating plan about 6 years ago and I had great success, granted I was eating healthy food still. I carry ALL my weight in my thighs & butt and it worked for me. Not something I could do long term by any means!

Sounds much too extreme to me. Nothing could be more clean eating than fruit. Why would anyone avoid it?

In the last few months I discovered that I have a mild sensitivity to wheat, so I limit my portions but I don't eliminate them. I also find that some breads give me more problems than others but I only eat it at lunchtime.

I eat oatmeal every day, I haven't noticed problems with brown rice, and I eat a few servings of fruit a day. I personally think that unless you are trying to cut your body fat enough for a competition, complex carbs have an important role in your diet. Besides, the carbs are what give our bodies the energy to function, much less fuel our exercise!

I believe in eating everything in moderation:) If I desire a piece of chocolate, I eat a piece . I also eat ezekiel bread, as well as stone ground wheat bread. When I visit Carabbas (not often), I splurge and eat their white bread dipped in lots of olive oil. Obviously, I don't do this all of the time, but I believe it is healthy to cheat every once in a while. Complex carbs are a staple in most people's diets. It fuels the body and mind unlike anything else.

I don't eat bread at all, and haven't done for years. I feel so much better now I don't eat it (mind you I used to eat A LOT). I eat lots of vegies and a lot of fruit, and about 1/2 cup of oats a day. I do find when I cut out grains I get a lot better results and feel a lot better (less sluggish). I will never, ever cut out fruit though. I just love it and it is so good for you.

Kim:)

I agree with a PP that eating complex carbs really makes a difference in keeping regular. I don't eat white bread very often at all (can't remember the last time I did) but I do eat complex carbs. Right now, I am loving Tosca Reno's porridge recipe for breakfast (it has oats and quinoa in it) as well as her Quintessential Quinoa recipe. I also love Ezekiel or Fat Flush tortillas. I eat Ezekiel bread when I want bread but find myself eating the tortillas (sprouted grain) much more often.

As for giving up fruit, I can't see how that would be good since fruit provides so many vitamins and minerals.

Thanks for the responses. Some things to think about. I agree completely about the fruit, I would never cut that out because of the fiber & phytochemicals. It sounds like some of you don't eat bread but eat other complex carbs -- and I'm not hearing anyone saying no to complex carbs to an extreme degree. I eat about 4 servings of either whole wheat bread or pita daily now, maybe I should try other forms.

I do the Weight Watchers Core plan, which has a specific list of "core" foods to eat. Bread is not on the list, though I still have a bit from time to time (WW also has a bit of flexibility about it). Brown rice, whole wheat pasta, and potatoes are on the list of core foods, but you can only have those once a day. Fruits are definitely allowed and I would hate to give them up. I don't know what I would use to satisfy my sweet tooth if I couldn't at least have some fruit. I think a lot of fresh fruits are also great because they are so full of water and fill you up a little better with fewer calories. For example, grapes are better than raisins for that reason.

Not a big fan of bread, but I don't avoid it. My mom taught me to eat all foods, even the ones i don't like much. I'll eat bread once a month or so...

I won't say I don't eat bread at all, but it's a rare treat for me. I do follow Atkins, which has a pretty simple science behind it, being that your body has 2 sources of energy: carbs & fat. Your body burns carbs first. So if you decrease your carb intake your body is forced to burn more fat.

That's why some people (including me) avoid fruits as well. Lots of sugar in fruit--granted it's natural sugar but it'd still make me gain weight. Fortunately for me I'm not a huge fan of fruits (sadly I think this stems from my dental problems, can't eat many cold things) so I don't much miss it.

Geez, you all are so good.:) I love, love, love, the bread at this little bistro my DH and I go to every Sunday for lunch. I dip it in olive oil and vinegar, so yummy, and yes, its the white variety!

Other than that, I guess I do not eat bread, but love crackers in my low sodium/lowfat soups. Sigh. Life is too short not to have a few things you love right?

I am at my lowest weight and body fat % when I EAT breads. My body needs carbs (it the preferred fuel for the body). I eat healthy carbs, but I eat them all day, everyday! :)

I don't eat bread very often at all. I haven't had white bread in years!! I call white flour/ sugars my white *crack*!! I just can't start on the bread/ simple carbs or I'll want to eat WAY too much of it!! I mainly eat the wraps- low carb whole wheat tortillas or flatbreads for my sandwiches & I make pizzas out of them also.

I don't eat real low-carb, I just stick to oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes, and other whole wheat pastas, barley, etc. But no, I'll never give up fruit! ;-)

Ummm...can someone please share this recipe for the Tosca reno porridge and the Quintessential Quinoa. I would sooooo appreciate it.
