How do you eat a grapefruit???

:DSerious question! lol

How, in the world, do you eat these without making a huge mess? I've been placing a 1/2 grapefruit in a bowl so it sits snug and doesn't slip. Then I use my grapefruit spoon that has those knife-like edges on the tip.

But I'm splattering it ALL over the place...my clothes, the keyboard, the PC screen!

Is it easier and less messy to eat it like an orange and peel then wedge it???

Please help me! :D

Gayle,

I am the splatter queen with grapefuit. I always try to keep it from flinging juice all over the room but have not mastered that task yet.

I honestly never thought to peel it and eat it like an orange. Gonna give that a try!!! But how will I sprinkle a little sugar on top????? mmmmmmmmm

Ellie-NO SUGAR! That's how you eat it! :p

And no offense, you 2 ladies, neither of you are much help! :D:D:D:D:D

You could try loosening the sections with a paring knife (slice along each side of the membrane and finish by cutting around the whole thing by the skin).

I quit doing this once I found the grapefruit spoons. And now squirt along with everyone else. I do close library books before starting on the grapefruit.

Gayle, do you take a grapefruit knife first and cut all the sections and around the perimeter? I always do that and I don't think I make a huge mess, but I may be remembering wrong.

I have eaten them peeled like an orange, but there is more of a bitter quality because you end up eating the pith (isn't that what it's called? No coffee yet!).

I have a spoon that is serated and it scoops the grapefruit out easily. I don't even know where I got it, but it works great. Just picture a small spoon with serated knife edges. I'm sure you can find them somewhere.

Hey, this is something that is right up my alley :p I'm out sick today with the cold from h*ll, and feeling useless, but this I know about:

I prep them like they do for salads; I don't try to eat it out of the rind with a spoon anymore. I've gotten really fast at this and can do it in about 2 minutes:

First, peel the grapefruit, but DON'T try to get off that thick white rind (you'll see why). Then pry it apart into 2 halves with your hands. Now get a sharp knife, and cut off the very ends of it......where the indentations were in the rind. This is going to help loosen the fruit, and you really don't lose the fruit, just the rind and membrane part. Now take the end of the knife and separate the thin membrane from the wedge of grapefruit, and then you can just work it free from the thick white part and plop it into a bowl. It's easier to do when the white rind is thicker. If a piece gets stuck then cut it apart, you really don't lose much of the fruit, and I figure you're getting more than trying to do the "spoon and grapefruit half" method anyway!

I've gotten pretty fast at this, and now I have a grapefruit at work almost every day. I love it! Hope this helps! :D

When I was a kid, I used to eat half grapefruits with lots of sugar on. Then one time, somebody gave me a piece of regular grapefruit with no sugar. I thought it would be horrible, but it wasn't bad. Now, when I eat grapefruit, I don't add any sugar, and usually just peel and eat like an orange. Red grapefruits are sweeter than yellow.

WOW! That's quite a technique! LOL I'll have to give it a try (and get a grapefruit knife too)! LOL

THANKS, everybody!

LOL as I just finished eating one. I peel mine like an orange. The whole hassel of using a grapefruit knife and spoon is just too much of a pain and I don't need sugar to sweeten it.

I eat grapefruit the same as an orange, except I have to take off the membrane that separates the sections...it just seems too thick to me!!!

It ends up being a real pain in the a$$, but grapefruit is one of my favorites!!!

Geez -- who knew eating a grapefruit could be this complex? ;) Umm Gayle - as you know I pretty much eat 1/2 a grapefruit every morning. I also have one of those serrated grapefruit spoons that I just use to dig in to the sections after I've cut it in half. No knife to cut out the sections or anything like that. Now I use a little bigger bowl than it sounds like you are using and if it splatters it splatters. When the sections are gone I squeeze the juice into the bowl and drink it -- yep - like a kid drinking the leftover milk from his cereal bowl.

Now here's the goofy part -- I don't actually like grapefruit, but I've eaten it forever because it is supposed to help w/ weight loss/management issues. So I cannot sit down to eat it because that would seem like I am enjoying it. Nope, for me I have to stand up and eat it before I actually make the rest of my breakfast. Hey -- however you eat your grapefruit, enjoy.

Hi Gayle -- I just use my grapefruit spoon from Pampered Chef and I cut each section, then I cut it around circular. I squeeze everything into a small bowl (making sure I get all of the pulp and juice!). While I'm fixing my breakfast, I put the bowl in the freezer and let it get really cold. After I eat my breakfast (being an omelet, or whatever), I then get my grapefruit bowl and it is partially frozen -- yum!!

Here is a great link...this is how I section my grapefruit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d85jmLnigAM

Now she sections it differently than I do...I actually use the knife to actually CUT eat section out of the membrane. She removes the rind like me...once it is gone, just hold the grapefruit in your hand and use the knife to run along BOTH sides of the membrane and the section will fall out.

I love this method as the work is all done when I sit done to eat it.

xoxo, Denise ;)
