Here Comes Hanna!

Being relatively new to the South, this should be an interesting experience. We are way inland, but I've still been told to stock up on water, bread, and other easy to eat non-perishables. Who knew? I'm used to preparing for snow. I guess it's the same principle, just different reasons.
Good luck to those of you closer to the coast!

I just heard that Hanna has weakened and is now a Tropical Storm. Hope you guys don't get it too bad.

I really don't know how people live through Hurricane Season. The damage it does is awful.

Hope all goes well. Maybe Hanna will shoot out into the open water. Hopefully she will at least stay downgraded. The important thing is that you are preparing just in case. Then we have Ike, Josephine... I am Texas about 60 minutes from Galveston so we get the Gulf Storms but have been spared for many years. Hope you are given the same grace :)

I am in western Virginia and we are preparing as well. I actually planning to go out of town this weekend, to Richmond (central VA) for the NASCAR races. But cars don't race in rain. All my friends are convinced that things will go on as scheduled but I am not.

I feel guilty about being so upset about my race weekend getting ruined when there are lives and homes and valuables at stake...

Hope everyone stays safe!

Katie, I feel guilty worrying about the storms ruining my weekend plans too. We are headed to Watkins Glen for the Grand Prix Festival in our TR6. Rain and convertibles are not a good combination.

We'll just have to pray the storms peter out in the middle of the Atlantic, so we can have our cake and not feel guilty about it.

Probably won't get Hanah here in the Fla panhandle but we are watching Ike. I've been through too many hurricanes to count. Opal and Ivan were the scariest for me I think b/c b/f always has to work and it always seems like they hit at night. You canenver see what's coming. Very scary.

Where are you?

Becky,
I don't know how far inland you are, but I was on Hilton Head one year when a hurricane was approaching. Many people left the island, but we decided to stay. The storm passed well to the east during the night and the following day was beautiful! That area tends to get spared, but the Outer Banks of NC gets hit much more often.

It's always good to be prepared for emergencies, but if you're stocked with the necessities, I wouldn't be too worried. Just make sure you have a radio with batteries to stay informed.

We're farther inland -- I wish that Hanna would bring us some rain! After three years of drought, we'd welcome a decent rainfall!

I live in Georgia and work in Florida so we always keep an eye out for these storms. I'm originally from the North so it very different from blizzards. I'd take a blizzard any day.

We just got over Fay and there are still tons of trees down and debris stacked up all over town. We lost power for 22 hours.

Kim - I remember the winds of Ivan. I was in Tallahassee working and sat at my desk on the 4th floor watching the power lines pop. It was pretty and fortunately I was in a building that had a generator. The worse one was Jeanne (in 2005). It hit at night and all I could hear was the wind and things hitting the house. It was very scary. We lost power on that storm too!

It's always good to have a stock pile of batteries and food.

I live in Southeastern Florida, between WPB and Ft Lauderdale. Hanna, Ike and Josephine go away! The worst storm for me was Wilma with no electricity for days, and someone's patio roof came crashing down on my car. It could have been worse but I hope I never see it.

Why do most hurricanes hit at night? I hate that and it makes it much more scarier.

Walgreen's has an NOAA radio that is hand cranked to recharge the batteries, and somehow, has a cell phone charger with it too. Have not seen one in person. I think they are about $30.

Ack! The latest projections look like the Charleston to Myrtle Beach area is the highest probability for land fall. We have a home in Myrtle Beach. Sigh. 19 years ago this month, Hurricane Hugo destroyed our home and we rebuilt. I sure hope we're not in for it with another "H" hurricane.

Stay safe all of you in her path.

JeanneMarie, I hope your home will be safe. Hopefully it wont be bad and it will be a minimal storm or better yet just fizzle out.
