Having Wisdom Teeth Removed

I am having them out friday ( apparently the surgery can't wait)...my 30th birthday is monday...my weekend is shot ( probably)...so instead of having my birthday party, I am throwing a PITY PARTY.....lol Any advice or what I can expect this weekend?? I'm scared........and it will be the first time I've been put under.......:( For those of you who have had them out, please tell me how you coped, how long you were out, and how much you hated life....LOL

I had all of mine pulled. For me, it was no problem at all! The worst part was not being able to eat before the surgery. The procedure was fine. I remember the Doc told me to take three dep breaths when he began anesthesia. I remember taking 2 1/2 breaths and then I was waking up. I didn't have any pain, so I never took any of the vicodin that he prescribed. My cheek was a little swollen, but it was back to normal after three days.

I had my surgery on a Thursday and took Friday off work.I pobably could have gone back to work on Friday. I didn't exercise those two days, but I probably could have as well. As for eating afterwards, my Doc just told me that I could eat solid foods when I felt like. For the next 2 of days I ate soft foods, the I was eating what I regulary eat.

I hope your surgery goes smoothly!

Be sure to rest for a day or 2 afterwards. I didn't do that. I felt fine after one was removed and went shopping. The dentist told me to go home and lie down. Well I should have listened. I ended up exhausted and hurting for one full week. All my own fault. So take it easy that day and maybe the next. Hope all goes well.

I had all mine pulled last year. For me it was a bit painful the first couple days after surgury but I was fine taking regular advil and I didn't need the strong prescription of pain killers.

Everyone reacts differently. I had some bleeding right after, swelling, a little bruising, and mild pain. I took two or three days off from work to rest and it was about one week before everything started feeling normal again.

Those teeth are such a pain in the butt!! My once straight bottom teeth are now crowded and I should have had those wisdom teeth pulled a long time ago.

Good Luck! You'll do great! It won't be as bad as you think.

I had all 4 pulled at once! The top ones weren't a problem, it was the bottom ones that took foreeveerrr to heal! They took out the packing with the medication on it a week later, and all my nerves were still exposed so I had that packing in my mouth for about a month to a month and half until there was enough coverage.

It didn't really hurt too much though! I thought I was going to be in a lot of pain, but as long as I had the packing in, I was fine. I never needed to take the prescribed medication. I remember when they were putting me to sleep, they were injecting it into my arm and he asked me when my birthday was and I could not remember! I was like "uhhh....ummm?? MY birthday? I DONT KNOW?!?" and then the next thing I remember was waking up in another room lol.

Also, eating is the worst part. When I got home, I tried to drink water but my mouth was still really numb, and I got some in my mouth but I couldn't swallow! I asked my mom "What do I do now! I don't know how to swallow!" It was good times, if only we caught it on film haha! Whatever food you are able to eat after surgery, trust me, you will never want to eat it again once you can eat real food. I can never eat oatmeal again, and barely PB&J.

Ok ok, good luck!! It really won't be a problem, just more of an inconvenience!

I had all four pulled right before going back for my senior year in College. Man, that was 10 years ago! Anyways, I remember being mildly miserable for a few days with puffy chipmunk cheeks. ;) I had to go to my nephew's birthday party the next day and my cheeks are forever immortalized on film. I will say that I lost some weight while my mouth was healing and I still remember the first solid food I had afterwards - STEAK (before I gave up red meat)! ;) All in all, it really wasn't that bad. I had some headaches for a little while, but it was nothing like when I got my tonsils out. You will be fine. For me, getting "fillings" rank way higher on my misery scale than getting my wisdom teeth out! ;)

p.s. They did not "pack" mine or anything. I had simple biodegradable stitches put in that dissolved with time. Not to gross anyone out, but I spent a large part of that spring semester fiddling with those stitches in my mouth. I wanted them out!

Shannon - OMG! I remember they brought me a drink right after I woke up and I took a big sip and it all just ran out of my mouth. I couldn't swallow either!

I had 1 pulled in high school and the other 3 pulled when I was about 20. Every situation is different, but for me both times were non-events.

The second time, I went in on Friday morning was out by noon and ate pizza that night. Didn't have much pain (maybe some aching after the Novocaine wore off) or swelling either time. My doc used sodium pentethal(sp) to knock me out. I basically recall going under pretty fast, and coming around fairly quickly afterward. I was groggy for a few hours after, but mostly hungry!

Good luck!!

ETA - ITA with Liann, fillings for me were worse!

i had two taken out at once and was awake during the procedure (just novacaine). my doctor prescribed tylenol w/codeine and that made me nauseous, so i just took regular advil or tylenol and really experienced very little pain. a small amount of bleeding the first day, some swelling and slight discoloration on one side. the only thing that bothered me was the inability to open my mouth wide in the following 5 days, no sandwiches or any of that stuff (had lots of milkshakes). good luck (and happy birthday).

Thanks for reminding me. I still have to get 1 bottom wisdom tooth taken out, the other bottom 1 was taken out by a dentist - I was wide awake and it was not a pleasant experience. Needless to say an oral surgeon must take out this last one and I'm being a baby about it. You will be just fine, please inspire me to make my appointment and get mine done ;) Good luck and HAPPY BIRTHDAY :D

Rather than share my horror story with you, I wanted to wish you luck and say let's focus on the positive --- you will lose weight - I lost 10 pounds effortlessly ..... the best part of the whole experience.

OUCH! I couldn't stand the thought of having mine pulled! My problem was that novacaine does not work on me very well (I've had a dentist phobia since I was 16). So, I requested a dental surgeon and let them knock me out for mine. I didn't have to take anything stronger than a Tylenol after and was up and about in a couple of days!

My DS just had his removed.

Things to have on hand, just in case -

Several bags of frozen peas to use as ice compresses to reduce swelling the first day/night.

Ibuprofen to complement any pain medication your dentist prescribes - go ahead and fill the 'script - cuz you don't want to run out to the pharmacy later.

Applesauce, mashed potatoes, soup.

Make sure someone is around to help you out. You might feel really out of it.

DS recovered quickly and is back to being his humorous self, but the first 24-48 hours were bearish.

Thanks for all the stories everyone!! This might not be as bad as I think..and I feel a little bit better.....but like someone said it's definitely an inconvenience!!

HaveFun- I will let you know how it goes and I hope you make your appointment!!!!

I had all 4 of mine out several years ago. I had twilight sedation because mine were impacted, but I had no pain afterwords. The tooth sockets felt weird, but not painful.

I had mine taken out of the gums when I was a teen getting braces! they were not even out of the gums yet. I also wasnt put to sleep. I had the standerd shots to the gums. It honestly didn't hurt too much. they gave me music to listen to and had pictures on the ceiling. My face was all swole up a while and it was awkward eating afterwards a bit but nothing awful. I just didn't like feeling the "grinding" feeling when they were pulling them out. ewwww!
I also had 4 adult teeth pulled at a different appt. that was actually worse I think. I don't know how those teeth fit as my teeth are packed together now after braces.

anyway if you get put to sleep for it I wouldn't be worried at all.

I had 3 pulled at the same time a few years ago. I didn't get knocked out, jus the novacaine. I still remember the sound of the teeth being pulled, and frankly, that is my worst memory of the experience.

Have plenty of soft foods available (I loved scrambled eggs!).

And one thing I remember is being told to use wet tea bags if I had trouble with bleeding.

Good luck!

Hi Pinny150,

Just wanted to check to see how you are doing after your surgery and hoping that you had a wonderful birthday :D

Hi there!

I made it through surgery just fine.....I bled a lottt the first couple of hours after because apparently when I woke up they couldn't get me to stop talking...LOL I was out garage saleing the next day (Saturday)I didn't feel down and out at all!...and today I hurt more than I have the last two days...I'm not sure if that is normal or not...it's not excruciating by any stretch, but I know its' there! I have not attempted a workout yet.............. Thanks for asking!!! :D
