Hardcore Series: Gym Style Chest & Triceps

Oh my do I have DOMS big time today from this. I did this yesterday. I haven't done this in a while. Tomorrow is Back, bicep & shoulders. I hope I survive.

Hi Barbara:

I have them both and I totally agree that each and EVERY time I do these workouts I have DOMS for several days following! I love them! You are not alone! Enjoy GS BSB tomorrow! :) come back and check in (if you can still reach for the keyboard to type! )

I love this series...I still have DOMS from GS Chest and Tri's from two days ago. I simply never noticed these type of results when I used the gym for weight training.

The pushups alone give me DOMS. Yikes!! That is a tough workout. I will probably be doing part of this series over the next few days.

For people who think bent knee pushups aren't effective...try this workout and do all the pushups from bent knee position. This is one of the workouts where I don't feel like I am cheating having to do pushups from the bent knee position.

Jerry,
I ususally do bent knee pushups. I can only eek out about 8 full body pushups. (that doesn't even get me through the first set-LOL) I think bent knee are very effective. It amazes me how strong Cathe and crew are!!

Chrissy...

This was the workout where I decided to "go macho" and do the pushups from my toes...I did 24, and then my back revolted and I couldn't workout for 2 weeks after. Honestly, I felt no differently, or less sore, after 72 bent knee version. If anything, I am able to focus more on form when I do these right.

When we were having lunch last week after class, and Cathe was all bundled up, I thought to myself...this is the woman who can outlift ME on a lot of exercises??? You'd just never know it..that goes for the rest of her crew as well!

Hi Jerry, that is so true, I use bent knee with my perfect push-up and it did the job;)

Well I survive Back, shoulders, and bicep this morning and it was hard in a good way. Still had DOMS from Wednesday but not too bad. I will do this next week and hope by the week after or so will start STS:)

Barbara...

I have this scheduled for tomorrow...the band t-pulls for the back have helped may back in a big way!

Need I mention the nasty words that escape my mouth during the 8 and 6 rep sets????:eek::eek:
Bent knee or straight this is one fierce segment in GS Chest & Tris...
Thank God I don't get DOMS anymore from this, but I still suffer and moan!
And what about the cross-body tri extensions... does anyone use their other arm to assist during the last reps... or am I going too heavy on those?
I can handle overhead extensions, kickbacks, lying extensions... but the cross-body makes me groan!!!!

Chris.

Sounds like a good workout. I just recently got this one. I think I will have to work this dvd into my schedule this week and see if I can live through all those push-ups in the beginning!

Yes, me too! My arms get pretty shaky during these too.

Funny you mention that - I'm doing a GS rotation right now, and had been using 8# (like Cathe) on the cross-body lifts and never got even close to finishing both sets. I've finally given in and dropped down on the weight, since I was missing almost half the reps of the last set. I go as heavy or heavier than Cathe in all the other tricep work, but those cross-bodies kill me. I really like them though. Once I dropped the weight and could really focus on the tricep (as opposed to trying to force the weight up with supporting muscles), I could really feel how the angle works it in a unique way.

I struggled with doing full-body push ups, but I've decided to go back to the knees - at least for my GS rotation. Doing full body, I felt like I was working my core more than my pecs (not that my core doesn't need it, but that's a different subject). I get a nice burn in the right place doing the push ups from the knees, with good form (OK, I admit I skip the 10s). I think that because my core isn't strong enough to support the movement, I'm not able to go down far enough to really work my pecs.

I think it's harder to cross my ankles and lift my shins perpendicular to the floor than to leave my shins on the floor, but maybe that's my imagination.

Ever notice that just prior to the set of 4 (or is the last set of 2?) when Cathe says we're slowing down the tempo, she says "why not?" I think of lots of nasty things to say back to her.

Another person who has a HARD time doing the cross-body extensions. I do the first set with 8# and the 2nd have to drop to 5#.
I have decided that while I get kind of bored during the chest work, I love the tricep work on GS. Oh, well, STS comes TOMORROW :D:D:Dand I do not think I will be picking GS up anytime soon (at least 3 months!) ;)

Can ANYONE do all 72 push-ups on their toes? I can do the first 16, then I try to do at least the first half of the other sets on my toes. How about all the push-ups in the week one, disc one of STS. Not so nice things were coming out of my mouth torwards the end of the DVD. :)

One of the reasons I love Cathe's workouts is because they deliver such results. When I started GS C & T, I could not do pushups on my toes, but after a few months, I was jumping for joy the first time I made it through the whole cycle on toes....of course, I still have those days when I get down to the staggered where my arms quiver and give out...thank goodness I use a mat.
I love all of the gym styles.
I am actually doing this one tonight with DH...his first time, so let's see how it goes :)

This is a great workout.. IMHO, it is her most challenging upper body workout yet. ( I don't have STS, so I don't know how that will compare

I think what makes it so hard is that she has you lifting pretty heavy weight w/ not alot of recovery time.. Frankly I can't believe she can talk and lift what she does through this workout... pretty impressive!

I like BBS from GS too, but for some reason it doesn't get me as much as Chest and Tris on the DOS front.

Take care, Lynn M

I just did this one tonight - I am not starting STS until April. So I'm doing GS to get into the 3 day split schedule.

This DVD is KILLER! To get through all the push-ups, I have to do the flat back - on my knees - not even a regular from-the-knees pushup. How embarrassing. But I get better extension, and I get through them all so I get a better workout in the long run.

Recently, I realized that I SHOULD be getting to failure on these workouts. So I definitely push to get there. I get to fairly pretty rapidly on the cross-body tricep extension. I am shooting for failure by the last 2 or 3 reps on the 2nd set.

Ever since this 1RM thing has come out - I realized that I am, for the most part, not lifting the weight I should lift to get the best results. So now I'm really going for it!

O.k. so you guys talked me into doing GS C&T, I was procrastinating on my workout and came here for inspiration! I am tired from skiing this morning and looking for an upper body workout so it is perfect I read this thread...Thanks for the inspiration!
