Hardcore Fitness Maniacs check-in for February 2018

Today was rest day. We had our family birthday party and then my grandson helped pull things out of the attic so we could purge some more stuff. It has been a mix of cleaning out and nostalgia before tossing things. It takes a long time. The rain and ice has finally gone so I need to clean the floors really well tomorrow.

Jolie, nice work. I have no idea what I want to do this next week. I laid out an Amy Bento workout and two older Kelly Coffey Workouts that I have not done in quite some time. The Lift dvd which someone else reminded me of. It has the Olympic lifting workout which I find a bit easier to do with dumbbells over the barbell and the other was Power Sculpting. Odd, she doesn't have a worksheet for Power Sculpting. I need to go back and look at some of my older notes. I think I liked the Power Sculpting and that maybe it was some compound moves. When I went through her workouts recently I missed that one.

No workout for me today, I've been sick all weekend. I think it's bronchitis, I've been coughing my head off for two days. I hope it goes away soon, I hate coughing. If it's not better by Wednesday I may go see my doctor. I hate when this happens.

Hope you all have great workouts today!

Happy Monday ( I guess mondays roll around so fast) today I did gym style back, shoulders and biceps.

Looking at new trainer I have never heard of hannah eden, i may order her dvd looks tough

No workout for me today, poor nights sleep. Also, yesterdays workout kicked my butt! Have any of you ever gone to family counseling? I need to do something for our family, it is broken at the moment. I am in real need of an outside party to give me advice. I have had no problems parenting my oldest son but I honestly feel like I have done everything wrong with my youngest son. I feel so sad and want to help him any way I can but he wont take my help. He continues to struggle in school, by the way he wont study half the time for the tests, but wants to continue going to this private school. He cant do it if he flunks out! I am very confused on what to do. I hope to God that drugs are not playing a role in his aggressive behavior. He is the moodiest person I have ever met. You say one thing he doesn't want to hear and he gets in my face and really lets me have it. Any thoughts on what to do. I realize you are not family therapists, but maybe you might have a suggestion.

Debbie,
I am sorry you are sick. I hope you are staying home from work and staying warm. Feel better.

Roselyn, nice job on the workout today. I have never heard of this new trainer, let me know what you end of doing about getting the workouts. I hope they are what you are looking for.

Diane Sue, nice getting to clean your attic yesterday. I love the feeling of spring cleaning. Have a nice workout today.

Enjoy your day.

Today I did Kelly Coffey Cardio Pump workout 1 cardio, 29 minutes, heart rate average 139, max 164, 192 calories, met 6, 2,812 steps. I then did Kelly's Lift Power Sculpting workout with 1 round of the floor segment that has the barbell rollouts and bridges( I think I hit the menu button or something and it stopped before the repeat), 45 minutes, heart rate average 103, max 136, 223 calories, met 4.7. I forget this one is more of a metabolic type workout with a lot of movement. I think I did do this one when I was going through the workouts recently and also did the Olympic lifting premix. Total time was 74 minutes and calories burned 415.

Debbie, I am sorry that you have been sick. I hope that you get better quickly.

Roselyn, that is great that you have found a new instructor that you may like.

Jolie, I never used a family councilor, I do not know what to tell you. If you could get him to a councilor maybe it being someone else he might open up and get some help. I know you love him and want what is best for him. He wants to stay at the school, so I would think it is not pressure from the school? How are his friend choices? I am really sorry.

No workout again. I think I have full blown bronchitis. I'm hoping to get into my doctor's office today but I don't think there is much they can give me for it.

Jolie - I'm so sorry to hear about your family. I don't want to scare you, but I wouldn't rule out drugs. If your schools are putting on a program called "Hidden in Plain Site", you might want to go to it. This will give you what you need to look for and see if your son is hiding drugs, taking drugs, etc. His moods and behavior sound to me like he is going down that road. I hope not, but I have had first hand experience with it. Moods and behavior changes is not good and usually that indicates a problem.

Debbie, that is what I expect as well. For instance, he was a totally different child yesterday. His mood was so calm and cool, I could talk to him without him blowing up. My oldest son told me there are two kinds of pot, one that calms you and is unmotivating, and the other amps you up and makes you extremely excitable. Ok, so if he is doing this, what do I do? We have contemplated drug testing him but my husbands friends say that this could back fire. They did it to their kids and all it did was made their boys not want to be around them and it ruined their relationships. I don't know how our relationship could get any worse. My dad suspects the same thing. Now if he was explosive all of the time I would think it was something else, but for him to be normal one day and extreme the next makes me thing it is drugs. I'm not sure what to do. I checked out counseling for him, starts at $180 an hour!

I did have a great workout today because I got some sleep and feel better. Why? because my son was normal yesterday! Workout # 2 full body, week #4. I did a finisher at the end using one exercise per body part. I liked this workout a lot.

STS warm up

Chest Flies- 20# x 10 ( 3 rounds of this circuit)

Wide Grip Pull Downs- 60 # x 12 ( 70# is too heavy so I did extra reps)

Cross Body Lying Triceps Ext- 15# x 10

Leg Curls- 20# x 14

Bicycles- x 40

Narrow Grip Pull Downs- 60# x 20

Workout was 46 minutes and I burned 314 Calories. My average heart rate was 115 and max was 154. I wanted to do cardio but I have to take my oldest son to the doctors.

Debbie,
I hope you feel better today.

Roselyn and Diane Sue,
Enjoy your workouts today!

Thank you for all of your support, I appreciate it more than you know. XOX

Today I did Kelly workouts. I started with Build and Burn Cardio Core, 27 minutes, 173 calories, met 5.8, 2,090 steps, heart rate average 129, max 168. I then did Train Like a Contender (TLC) Boxing workout with the warm up, 35 minutes, 222 calories, heart rate average 128, max 159, 5.8 met, 3,204 steps. I finished off with Athletic Conditioning 2 workout 2 abs/stretch, 25 minutes, 69 calories, 2.5 met, 142 steps.(I took a lower cal burn for this as everything was all over the place, Map My Fitness had 152 using abs as it's setting) The met I used is in yoga range. Total time was 87 minutes, and calories 464.

Debbie, I am sorry about the sickness. We have had some family members that had horrible bronchial types of coughs. So far I have been able to fight off most things that have came around. I hope that you can get in to the doctor and find away to get over it.

Jolie, you got in a really good workout today. My heart goes out to you. Yes, that is strange that the moods are different from day to day.

Jolie I hope you figure things out with your son, my son is 22, my daughter is 26, and they could be moody teens but this does sound so up and down for him. Could it be depression? High anxiety? I used to have such anxiety/depression and I could go up and down dramatically (I was also dealing with an eating disorder) so maybe it is not drugs but an issue he does not know how to talk about, counseling and anxiety med helped me out of it, but kids are different and can keep a lot in. Is there a school counselor at his high school meanwhile your exercising will help your stress, sending prayers

Today I did Gym Style legs

Debbie I hope you start feeling better soon

Roselyn, I think that everyone experiences anxiety and depression and sometimes it lasts longer than others. I dont think it causes intermittent hostility and anger issues so much though. Gym Style legs is a good one that I have not done in a very long time.

Today I did Kelly Coffey TLC (train like a contender) pre-mix lower conditioning, 18 minutes, 89 calories met 4.5, 910 steps. I then did Fit Split Low Impact cardio skipping some of it and no stretch, 19 minutes, 126 calories, met 6.0 ( I don't have heart rate other than I pulled up an average on Fit Bit of 125 since I forgot to turn it on till near the end), I then did Fit Split Legs and Glutes skipping the warm up and only doing the gliding disc before weights, 29 minutes, 170 calories, 5.3 met, heart rate average 114, max 147, 1,091 steps. I finished off with the lower squats, high tight, calves and stretch from Fit Split Pull, 12 minutes. 60 calories, met 4.5. Total time was 78 minutes, 445 calories.

Jolie - When you had him tested earlier in the school year when he wasn't doing well in school, did they test for bi-polar? Sort of sounds like those symptoms to me as well as it could be drugs. When it comes to drugs, there is not good advice, unfortunately. I've experienced it first hand (my cousin's child) and they've been through hell and back. He is now clean but it has taken years. I'm not saying this to scare you, just stating a fact. So your older son doesn't know anything? They aren't close? What sort of friends does he hang out with? Troublemakers or good kids? If it were me, I'd say take him to get a drug test and take him when he isn't expecting it. Because the horrible fact of this epidemic is that he already knows how to take a blood test and test negative. If you buy a kit for you to use at home, have your husband stand with him to make sure he isn't trying to fake it. By the way, what does your husband think?

Check out this website: http://powertotheparent.org/be-aware/hidden-in-plain-sight/ - this is what I was talking about. All our school districts gives parents this class but if you don't have that advantage, read through this website. I'm sure there are more if you want more information. You might just be able to go up in his bedroom and find evidence of something.

I hope this helps and I hope this isn't the battle he has decided to grab. It isn't pretty and it's not easy to overcome. So see what you can find out because what you are describing sound terrible to me.

Thank you to everyone for all the great advise! Day 3 and my son is acting completely normal, very nice and calm and doing his homework! He has been coming home straight after school instead of going to friends houses for awhile before he heads home. I took his car away and boy was that a wake up call! I think he is smoking pot on some days, especially the weekends and that is when he is the worst. I told my husband he had to step up and be the man of the family and stop leaving everything for me to handle because he doesn't want to jeopardize his relationship with his son. Every week I am going to test him for drugs and if he passes that test as well as he is passing every class in school he can earn the right to drive his car again. I'm not taking it anymore! As my dad always said to me, "Its my way or the highway!"

Yesterday I did not workout, it was my second rest day for the week.

Today is Full Body Workout #3 Week #4 and I loved it again. I didn't have too work too hard so I may have to go up in weight next week. I used DB's except for legs.

DB Incline Chest Press- 27# x 10 ( 3 rounds of this circuit)
1 Arm Horiz. Rows- 20# x 10
Upright Rows- 17# x 10
W Curls- 17# x 10
1 Arm Kickbacks- 12# x 10
Leg Ext- 60# x 14
Leg Curls- 22.5 x 12
Plie Squats- BW x 20
Alternating Leg Raises- x 20

Workout was 40 minutes and I burned 261 calories. I was supposed to do some cardio but I am running late.

Diane Sue, great job on that workout yesterday! You absolutely amaze me how in shape you are and the weights you choose for each exercise.

Roselyn, wow, gym style legs is a tough one!!!!! Holy dread factor for me.

Debbie, I am going to drug test him. I told my husband to step up!!! He doesn't handle confrontation as well as I do but come on! I don't think he is bi polar. I think he is hanging around with the wrong kids and doing things he shouldn't be doing. Why? Because now that he is grounded and at home most of the time he is back to normal. He doesn't seen to have any sort of addiction because he is literally fine being off what he was taking. I think I have caught this issue just in time, I hope. He went off the ADHD meds about a month ago because that was horrible as well. He couldn't eat or sleep but it did help him focus in class. He just didn't like how he felt so that was good enough for me. He said he will only take them when he has to study for finals if need be. I am totally ok with that since I hate any sort of drugs anyway. I think he has been lying to himself what the actual problem really is. I know he has ADHD but you can function quite normally so I hate to use that as an excuse for his behavior. I do however know it does effect his school work and grades but we are working on that issue. I hope you are feeling better. :)

Have a wonderful day!

Today I did X10, 82 minutes, 581 calories, met 6.5, heart rate average 136, max 185, 5,993 steps, 72% peak, 16% cardio, 7% fat zone. This was frustrating calculating as if I took what Fit Bit says I would be 503 calories and actually I think my met should be at least 7. The workout manager has met 8.5, 760 calories. My calorie calculator has 719 calories net and this is using a lower VO2 max than I am. The thing is doing the lighter low impact workouts like Fit Split my met value came to 6.0 and often is in that area or 5.8. This is a much more intense workout than those. Just airing my annoyance here

Debbie, I hope that you are feeling better today.

Jolie, I think you are getting on the right track. It really should take both parents together to deal with something like this. I don't think it would be a good idea to be taking ADHD meds along with using drugs. As you know, I am not fond of the ADHD meds anyway. Maybe your son will start realizing how much better he feels without the drugs. Counciling may be in order to help along with a unified family support system.

Still very sick, I finally went to the doctor this morning and I have an upper respiratory infection. He gave me a Z-pak and cough medicine and said I should be feeling better by Monday. I hope so, I cannot take this coughing anymore. And I miss my workouts.

Jolie - Not to be a Debbie Downer here, but 3 days of a good mood doesn't mean he stopped. And you said you thought he was smoking pot, but I don't think marijuana makes your moods good or bad, usually it's used for calming effects, that's why they give it out for medicinal reasons. I think with what you described, he is probably on something a bit more potent than pot. Definitely get him drug tested and again, don't tell him. Is he still a football player? Don't they test for drugs? Also, keep an eye on his pupils. This is what to look for:
  • Changes in pupil size, either constricted or dilated
  • Nystagmus, or rapid involuntary movements of the eyeballs
  • Conjunctiva redness, or bloodshot eyes
Diane Sue - Nice job with your workouts this week!!

Rosely - Nice job with GS Legs!

Today I did Fit Split Boxing Bootcamp , Boxing and abs timesaver mix, 48 minutes, 311 calories,m heart rate average 128, max 166, met 6.0, 3,402 steps. I then did Fit Split Pull only timesaver and skipped the shoulders, still 37 minutes but that counts stops< 163 calories, met 4.0, heart rate 101average, max 163 ?? . I finished off with Barre Amped Upper body stretch, 13 minutes, 31 calories. Total time 98 minutes, 505 calories.
Weights Pull day
one arm row- 30,30,30 # x 12,10,10 reps
Pullovers- 15# dbs x 8,6,6 reps
