Does anyone have any idea on why my hair has all of a sudden gotten thinner right in front. It started (I literally woke up one morning and saw this) with a small spot to the left of the center of my forehead. It wasn't a bald spot and I thought maybe I had just damaged it with my straightening iron. It freaked me out enough to start using Roagine but over the past 2 weeks, it seems to be spreading across my hairline (it's to the middle now). Also, the bang area beind part of it looks thinner as well. People tell me that don't even notice it until I point it out and I can fix my bangs to hide it, but I'm worried. I wondered if the Roagine was making it worse. I haven't had any more stress than usual, hormones should be stable from the pill and I've been on this one for years so it shouldn't be fluctuations because my periods are regular. The only thing different was back in Sept, I started a new eating plan that had me eating the right combinations of protein and carbs. I also drank lots of water and lost 4 inches in 21 days. I'm taking 3 Biotin pills per day, fish oil, a HSN, vitamin and Evening Primrose Oil PULS a multi. I also use Nioxin. I honestly don't know what else I can do!!!! Maybe I'm shedding again.

Kim,

I don't know of anything either. I just wanted to let you know you are not alone. A couple of my sisters are losing hair like you. Would also like to know if anyone has a handle on this, so I can relate it back to my sisters.

(((((Hugs to you)))),

Janie

If you have 2 sisters losing, I would guess it's hereditary. How old are they? I'm thinking that shouldn't be my issue b/c I'm only 37.

Hi Kim,

Sorry to hear you are going through this. I had the same experience in the spring except I had not only baldness in the front but bald spots in the middle and back of my head and my hair became extremely brittle and stringy. My doctor ordered blood tests for my thyroid and checked for calcium and iron deficiencies. She said I could try rogaine but the success rate was low. She was very certain because of the pattern of the hair loss that the culprit was my recent weight loss and the lack of fat in my diet. She instructed me to take all the supplements that you are taking and within 2 weeks my hairloss started to slow down. The loss did not stop all together, it slowed down and it became less brittle. After about 4 months the spots on the back of my head were filling in with new hair, the front not so much. I did have times where I would start to lose more hair again, but it's normal to go through a shedding phase a few times a year. I read that some women lost their hair from birth control pills, but I don't know if it was a new prescription or if they developed an intolerance to the pills they were on. Is there a history of women in your family with thinning hair, perhaps this is partially responsible. You may want to visit a doctor that deals specifically with hair loss for further testing.

At last check, my thyroid was fine. I think the women on my mom's side are fine but the last time I saw my aunt on my dad's side, her hair was thinning (she's in her upper 60's though). I going to increase my intake of Biotin, keep using the Rogain and Nioxin and see what happens I guess. What are you doing about your har in the front? Also, WHY would a healthy diet which resulted in weight loss cause hair loss!!!! This is ridiculous. I'd almost rather keep the extra 40 pounds now.

i know it seems crazy. i felt that i was eating healthier than ever too and was stunned by what my doctor was telling me. my tests came back fine, no deficiencies, but the supplements, especially the added fat helped. i think I lost 25 lbs in 3 months, but once i went to the doctor, I started eating more and kept my loss to only 1-3 lbs. a month and that helped. losing weight can be a huge strain on the body. i had no idea! 3 weeks ago i ended up in the ER and needed my gall bladder removed. it came out of the blue, i never had any indications of gall bladder problems, i've never been sick my whole adult life. anyway, i found out that losing alot of weight quickly is a risk factor. i have no idea if this contributed to my situation, but it definitely changed my outlook on dieting and losing weight. if you have more weight to lose, i suggest doing so slowly, for your overall health and to minimize further hair loss.

What's the healthy diet that resulted in that quick weightloss? And what's the right balance of protein and carbs?

The eating plan I did was called the Food Lovers Fat Loss program. You eat one portion of the following at each meal: protein, fast carb, slow carb. You also eat a snack often enough so that you are not going more than 3 hours without eating. Each day, during the 21 day induction phase, you add something that helps kick start your metabolism. For example, around day 4 you cut out all types of processed sugars. I now use oragnic cane juice instead for sweeteners. You also cut out BAD fats and choose healthy ones. You drink a lot of water and exercise as well. You also stay away from things like enriched bleached flout and chose whole wheat (REAL whole wheat) instead. When I say I lost 4 inches, it was from everywhere, not just in my stomach. I really couldn't tell much difference in my clothes so I'm guessing I probably lost about 5 pounds. After the 21 days, you can choose to continue that plan or go with option 2 which still results in weight loss but since you add back in things you had been cutting, the loss is slower. I fell off the wagon anyway. I wouldn't think that 21 days of healthy eating would've started a period od shedding. Maybe it's ongoing daily stress from work.

Low progesterone will cause hair loss, although I've never heard of it just coming out in one area.

I had a friend once whose hair began thinning but hers was genetics, her dad's side of the family all had this.

His website shows BBQ fried beans, biscuits and gravy and country fried chicken and quite frankly I am scratching my head a little trying to figure out what is healthy about this? Fried chicken is unhealthy no matter if you use regular flour or whole wheat flour.

What was a typical day like?

In general, if thyroid issues and hormones are ruled out, it very likely is your diet and/or your supplements. If you think you have to take supplements I would look for those that are whole foods based, not artificial. How is your magnesium intake? And your vitamin D levels? Most Americans magnesium levels are ridiculously low and magnesium is often one of the culprits for hair loss as are low vitamin D levels. Get your vitamin D levels checked!

Hmmmm..well, my 2 uncles on my dad's said are almost bald and my dad's sister is showing thinning. But my dad has held out! :p Even so, I wouldn't think I'd be dealing with this until at least my 50's.

His recipes are made with good ingredients; unprocessed and organic if possile. The "fried" chicken is coated with a mixture of things like crushed pecans, whole wheat flour, cornmeal, egg, and the baked. I'm not doing it exclusively anymore but if you read through the material, it is a good eating plan. I don't see how that could've contributed anyway because at most, I probably only lost about 5 pounds.

I take a Vit D supplement 3x per week because I didn't know if I was low and didn't want to overdo it. I don't see how any of the other supplements I'm taking could cause hair loss. I have NO idea what my magnesium intake is either. I've heard of meds causing hair loss but not supplements like fish oil and the others I'm taking.

My sister is 32 and has been losing her hair for years. I have a full head of hair. I know that she has type 2 diabetes but I don't know if that's why. I will ask her if she knows why. She is a nurse so she might understand.

I've heard of PCOS but that's not my issue. I had a nurse look at it tonight and she said it was probably stress and also said she saw new little hairs (though I can't see them and TRUST ME, I've looked). Guess we'll see what the blood work says.

Kim - I have gone through a big shed and it freaked me out a bit. I think that my BCP was to blame and I have gone off of it. You can add coconut oil to your diet, either in a shake or plain, and you can use it on your hair (I've not tried it yet but am going to.) I had a friend who had good success with that. The added fat helped and she also put it on her hair. For both of us, our hair was coming out all over but it seems that when I look at my bangs, they look thinner, like there is spot with less hair, but I really think it is the way bangs will separate from the other hair b/c they are shorter. Look at your part - if it is no wider, then you are safe and it is a regular shed. BTW - thanks for the shout out a while back - I replied but did not come back here for long time after that.

Thanks for your post. My part isn't any wider but the area where the hair is coming out at the hairline is just so weird. Because it's thinner, if I part the hair at that point, it looks wider. Call me crazy, but I found an endo in Manhattan who specializes in women's hormones :D and made an appt for Jan 16. I love Manhattan and have been wanting to go back so this is a GOOD reason. Interestingly enough, some of the things he suggests I'm already doing like taking BCP (Yasmin). I may just need to change the way I take it.
