Growing Belly Mom's Check-In 9/6

Priscilla, I wasn't told to fast before my 1 hour glucose test, so was surprised when I wasn't allowed to take it after eating a few bites for breakfast that morning. I had looked online for guidance the night before, and read on several sites that fasting is not required for the one hour, just the 3 hour. I do think your OB is being very cautious, maybe because your mom is diabetic. I'm sure you'll do fine on the next one, as your number didn't sound high to me (and my non-medical school-educated self LOL).

Jen, what a wonderful compliment from the mom/son duo. :) It must make you warm and fuzzy to hear such high praise from a teenager!

Anyone have a sit and stand type stroller? I'm torn on which to get. DD is 3.5, so I don't think we'll need it for long. I am considering the Joovy Caboose Ultralight or the Baby Trend Sit N Stand. Any opinions, guidance, reviews would be appreciated :)

Morning!
Jen-I know the mom/son made youfeel so good..that is great!!! I know your area of work can be so rewarding sometimes, yet so heartbreaking the next!

Allison-sorry but I don't even know what a sit and stand stroller is  so I am no help! I will send you some "dialating vibes"!!

Melanie-hope your day goes well today!

Pricilla-I really think your dr is being "safe". You eating breakfast shouldnt of affected the test. I had lunch an hour before going..if your body can take care of the extra glucose your levels will be fine. I think the "norm" for dr's are different. I had to be below 145....Im not sure what mine was though. Hang in there and TRY not to worry too much.

Plan on reading and napping today!! Im trying a new recipe too, so I need to run get a lime when I take Haley to school.

Not sure if I will workout. I am ordeing 7 new vids though. 6 Kelly Coffey Myers and the new Jari that isnt out yet. I"ll be set with some new stuff to try in a couple months.

Priscilla- I hope you didn't take my comment that you did anything wrong. My dr just suggested fasting because he said too many carbs can affect the results and then you end up taking the 3 hr for nothing. I'm sure you will pass the 3 hr one with flying colors!

Susan- I have pretty much given up on working out. You still inspire me though so keep talking about it!

Well, not good sleep last night. Just very uncomfortable with hip, pelvic and back pain. DH was home from work at 4:30am so we talked for awhile and I finally fell back asleep until 6:30am. Can't wait for baby James and sleepless nights from breastfeeding and not feeling uncomfortable from pain. I will be slowly trudging through my day at work! Hope everyone else had a restful night!

Jen, I did not take your comment in a bad way at all. I did some research and like Melanie said it was not neccesary to fast. I just feel like I would've fasted maybe I would've passed it. Sorry you you did not get to rest last night, hey are you plannin on taking breastfeeding classes. One patient mentioned it to me yesterday and I may do it. Just wondering if any of the first time moms are considering it as well

Back to work, I'll be back later

Priscilla, do nto worry. I think your doctor might be extra cautious because of family history. I ate before mine as well. One odd thing, I have read that Xylitol (artificial sweetener in gum adn mints) can really cause innaccurate results. Xylitol causes insulin to be released more than normal. SO make sure not to have any sugarless stuff. The technician at my test sai done little breath mint can cause results to go crazy! Bring a DVD player and a few movies!!! As for breastfeeding, I gave it a shot, and it did not work for me, but I have huge admiration for those who do it. I pumped for 3 months, but that was purely exhausting. I am going to do formula this time. Check to see if you have a lactation consultant at the hospital, they are helpful. When your milk first comes in a few days after labor, you may need to pump or manually express a bit before baby can latch... The boobs go a little crazy at first, full to a point that you think you may explode! Good luck on teh test, I bet you are going to pass with flyign colors!

Just a quick note. I received a call from my dr and I failed the glucose test. My glucose level was 136 mg/dl so I had to pick up a lab order to get the 3 hr test completed next monday. I really hope everything is fine. My mother is diabetic and even though I have never been diagnosed as a diabetic, IM FREAKING OUT now...

Try not to worry. I failed the first test but passed the three-hour test. And if I hadn't I know it would be OK. My dad is diabetic, too, as was my grandmother. Just remember how common gestational diabetes is, and it does not mean we will end up with diabetes. Don't worry. You may pass the three-hour test and if you don't, do not worry. When I was freaking out, a lot of people told me they failed the test, too, and everything turned out fine.

Priscilla- I don't plan on taking any classes at this point. Christine sent me some helpful DVD's and one of them had a short segment on breastfeeding. It was helpful to actually SEE how to do it because I have done a ton of reading on it but I am a visual person. I was worried about breastfeeding until I saw the video and now I feel a little more relaxed. Like Christine said, hospitals also have lactation consultants which I plan on utilizing while I am there. We also rent movies online from blockbuster and I have one on hold about breastfeeding but it is taking forever for us to get. Maybe you could do something similar???

Is this labor??

Hi ladies,

First-time-mom-to-be-here . . . So uh after my 37-week apt yesterday, there was some spotting. Doc said to expect this. Ok. No problem. Got it. He did do a bit-of-a-painful exam to check dilation. And the spotting ended last night.

Today spotting began again with some very light cramps. Now I'm thinking--did I pass the mucus plug? Hmmm. I'm not sure if I noticed something or not. Maybe I did? I called the doctor, but he said the spotting is normal. He said it could be a few days or a few weeks. And now I think I'm having braxton hicks but they're not painful--yet.

I know nobody can tell me exactly when baby will come. I'm excited and nervous! Thanks for letting me talk to you guys!

Spotting after an internal exam is normal IF it is not bright red. If it is bright red or has a greenish tint with fluid, call your doctor. If it is dull, brown, clumpy, it is your cervix ticked off at being bothered! When you pass yoru mucous plug, you will now for sure. If you are worried, make an appt with the doctor. Safe is better. My son was a few weeks early. I never passed the plug, but the cramps became regular, and became contractions. At that point, the doctor wanted to induce me with pitocin to get things rolling, since my son was already in motion, so prevent risk of cord entanglement... I am sure you are fine, but it always makes me feel better when someone has been through the same thing!

Dawn-I know you are getting excited..I am for you! I never knew when my mouscus plug was passed. My labor started just as small cramps, but no spotting. You better keep us posted. Isnt 37 weeks "at term"? So you could go into labor any second! If your contractions become regular and painful I would for sure call the dr.

I had a great lactation consultant at the hospital...and luckily Haley caught on immediatly. I never had a problem nursing but had friends who just couldnt do it. I say give it a good try though..its sooooo worth it. I

Hi, all!

It's a chilly day here in Philly -- high of only 70, with temps dropping. Hard to believe it's already dark enough at 6:12 that I need a light on in the living room. Ah, I heart fall :)

Dawn, I never experienced spotting after an internal. With DD, I passed my mucus plug while going to the bathroom, so I knew for sure mine came out (at 4:45 AM on my due date). Since I had my 40 week appt that day, the doc went ahead and admitted me to the hospital (I had been 3 cm for a couple weeks, too). I'm sorry I'm of no help in answering your question. But I know plenty of people who have gone anytime after 37 weeks. You never know!!

I have been eating junk like I'll never see it again! I think I'm allowing myself to eat it, thinking I'm at the end and will soon no longer be able to use pregnancy as an excuse. Augh. But I put a lentil and brown rice casserole in the oven for my dinner -- I figure that's a nice, clean option and will give me plenty of leftovers for lunches/snacks over the next few days (since DH won't eat it LOL).

hey are you plannin on taking breastfeeding classes. One patient mentioned it to me yesterday and I may do it. Just wondering if any of the first time moms are considering it as well

I took a prenatal breastfeeding class (with a Cabbage Kid no less LOL). I think it helped calm me down a bit, but there are lactation consultants at the hospital who will want to help you, whether you take the class or not. I also went to a place here called the Breastfeeding Resource Center, which my pediatrician recommended to me. I'm sure yours can recommend one too.

My experience was the opposite of Susan's. Breastfeeding was not for us. My milk didn't come in until Day 8, DD was a snacker instead of an eater. I barely made it 6 weeks before I went exclusively to formula.

I plan to try again this time. I just put the washed cover back on the My Breast Friend pillow, which is a great pillow for nursing -- easier to position the nursing baby with it than with a Boppy.

I also agree about hte My Breast Friend Pillow, The boppy was lousy. I had the same experience as Allison. It just did not work, but I got an A for effort! I wanted that blissed out look all the other moms had as their kid ate away! Instead mine never latched and formula was a saviour. Pumping was hard for me, it took hours every day. I appreciate moms with good feeding boobs! Whatever works!

Hi everyone,

I think I'm a moron. No more spotting this morning. No more light cramps or braxton hicks. Just the baby chilling out and kicking now and again. She is full term at this point (37 weeks), but if I can get to 40, I guess it's better for her in the end. Maybe I had false labor yesterday but probably I'm just a nervous nellie.

I took a breastfeeding class recently, too, and last night infant CPR. I guess you never know what will work for you (the breastfeeding, I mean; hopefully CPR will always work!). Susan and Allison, thanks for sharing your experiences.

Now it's just a waiting game. I'm now on permanent work-at-home status, due to a very nice doctor and supervisor. Hands are tingling a bit this morning, but the more water I drink, the more that goes away.

Hope everyone has a great day!
Dawn

P.S. Allison, your post about not eating so well but self-justifying that you had to use up your pregnancy excuses while you can made me laugh. I've been pretty good, but then I think, I won't really be eating chips and ice cream again once the baby's born. Suddenly, I'm halfway through a bag of chips. What was I thinking! Oh well, I am at least thinking more about exercise these days, especially starting STS. So that's something!

Dawn! You had me on a rollercoster when I was reading the posts from yesterday.

I never saw my mucous plug either......but people have told me it looks like snot. If your dr "interrupts" things during cervical check....the membranes can be stripped a bit....causing a prostaglandin release from your body....which may cause a labor cascade.....

My first signs of being in labor are "diarrhea type cramping". That's just me though.

I never had lactation classes, but when I had my eldest (15 years ago) I remember the nurses pulling on my boobies telling me I was doing it all wrong. I was only 20 years old.....and horrified that these women were pulling on me!!!! It all worked out, I successfully nursed 3 perfect boys.

I'm off to work. Have a good day ladies!

Dawn-I was thinking about you last night and was for sure you were in labor. This having a baby thing is stressful!

Melanie-my labor also started that way. I did have diarreah for a few hours. However, I did still poop during delivery  Did you wear your new support yesterday??

Yesterday I did a short premix of NYC. Today I plan on a short cardio. I have been having major brx hx, so that might cancel my workout today. I slept ok last night, so today won't be miserable. weight was 136.4 this morning. 35 weeks as of yesterday!

Jen-I hope your night was better!!

Time to get the ball rolling for today. I"ll check on your gals later.

Morning waves to everyone!!!!!!!!:D

Good morning ladies! Well I got to see Baby James for the last time on u/s. The tech switched to 4D view and gave us some amazing pics! He smiled in one and looks like he's kissing the camera in another. I'll post a few when I get home tonight or tomorrow. He is 4lbs 2oz right now. I see the dr on Monday so I will know more but everything looks good so far.

Sleep was pretty good until about 4am or so. I finally just got up at 5 am so I will be dragging at work today.

I'll check back later for personals!

Jen, what awesome pics of James!! Love that you got to see him smile and kiss the camera. Your heart must have melted seeing your little guy :)

Susan, I keep reading about your workouts and think to myself, "Augh -- I should do SOMETHING." And yet, I don't. I'm getting tired, and I'm too busy doing other things (you know, like checking forums LOL). I had the same delivery room experience you did; I was horrified! I kept trying to hold it in, but then finally reasoned that holding it in was counterproductive, seeing as how I needed to push the kid out LOL

Dawn, ah, so the chips have been jumping into your mouth too? It's not our fault :p I had an attack with a bag of sour cream and onion potato chips -- polished it off in 3 days! Well, I did finally dump the rest of the bag into the garbage so I couldn't keep eating them (but those were only crumbs LOL).

I just started reading Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell After Pregnancy. Anyone else read this one? After that, it'll be the book I bought the day I realized I was pregnant (a few hours before I realized I was late!) -- Tom Venuto's The Body Fat Solution.

Oh, Susan -- forgot to ask -- what exercise DVDs did you pick up? I just got an email from amazon.com today; they are having a Fall Fitness DVD sale -- hundreds of titles under 9.99.

Hey!
Allison-when you push as hard as we have to something is bound to come out!! Dh assured me it wasnt too bad though!
I ended up getting 11 new dvds  I got all t e 30 min to fitness Kelly Coffey Myers, and then a few 10 min solutions for something different. I usally like 60 workouts but in the next couple months I might needs some quicker workouts....plus I can always add on if needed. The 10 min solutions workouts are 50 min all together. I hope I like them. I need to order shock cardio too. I may just have to do that today. I am just antsy to start working hard again. It takes everything I have to do the short workouts I do. If I worked there is no way I would be working out. I did LIS this morning and it about killed me! Gonna go check out that Amazon sale now!

Did some studying today and ran some errands. Here is a a little diaper bag I got. Isnt it cute. My shower is next Sunday..Im excited about that!

Haley has cheer practice in a little while and cheers at her first game tomorrow. Should be fun!

Hope everyone is having a great day!
