Green bags

Don't work. Don't waste your money.

When am I gonna learn? I swear, that screaming man on TV suckers me into everything. I just ordered that GD Fix It for the scratches on my car. Wanna bet it's just compound in a pen?

I'm such a sap!

Perfect timing, Laura. Thanks! I just noticed these in the grocery store yesterday. I actually considered buying them.

Now I'm glad I didn't!!!

What are green bags? I've been using my own large canvas bags for years. I love them, and I absolutely hate it when I wind up in a store without them. Those plastic grocery sacks just plain suck.

Are these the ones that you put your produce in to keep them fresh longer? I JUST saw an informerical for them yesterday and almost bought them!

Good to know they aren't any good. Thanks, Laura!

I just Googled them. Allie, you're right. So my first post has absolutely nothing to do with the topic.

Oh, no! I fell for these also. I just picked them up at BB&B and was hoping they'd keep my bananas a little bit longer. How did they fail for you, Laura? I'd like to try half the bunch in the bag and half the bunch out to see what happens.

I was wondering about these as well. Thanks for the heads up, Laura!

That screaming man cracks me up. Why does he have to scream on every commercial he's on???? LMAO!!!

I'm a sucker too! Bought them at bed bath and beyond and found out they are just really expensive pieces of you-know-what! The only thing I like about them is that they are deep and you can fit a loaf of bread in them nicely. LOL!

I read about these in Consumer Reports. They tested a variety of produce; everything went bad either as quick or quicker than when stored in regular bags.

My mother uses these tupperware type containers that have two openings- you can leave one, none, or both open depending on how much that particular veggie needs to "breathe". I think they're useless, but she loves them. Best method I've found is to buy less and eat it fast!

They work for grape tomatoes

I've been using the Green Bags for months now for grape tomatoes, & I find they work fine. I make salads in advance to take to work, and prefer grape tomatoes because they are self-contained. I'd buy two pints every week, and would end up tossing out a lot of them by the end of the week. The green bags have cut down on the wasted tomatoes considerably for me.

They're the same exact thing as ziplocs only more expensive & less sturdy. I decided that, since I spent so much flippin money on them that I'd wash & re-use them. Total no-go. They got holes in them really fast & I don't even know how since I didn't have them near anything sharp.

I'm considering that ziploc system w/the vaccuum. Anyone have it? $9.99 for something reusable is certainly more palatable than $30 for something you can get much cheaper in the grocery store & that's only good for a single use.

My mother gave me a few of them, swearing they made everything last so much longer, on and on and on. I tried them many, many times with different stuff and they never worked!

I also saw in Consumer Report magazine they were tested and did not do a good job, as claimed.

Here's the trick I learned to keep things like lettuce, broccoli, asparagus fresher lots longer. After I wash the veggies, I shake off the water, (I use a salad spinner for the lettuce) then put it in a ziploc bag with a slightly damp paper towel. Zip it about halfway up, don't close it completely (it needs to breath a bit). Then store in the crisper area of your fridge. It helps even better if you get one of those green thingies that absorbs the gas that veggies leak out (I can't think of the name for the life of me!). They sell them at Linens 'n Things next to the register. They do help, but if you do the Ziploc/paper towel thing, you don't have to use them.

I also have a FoodSaver for stuff like cheese, lunchmeat, etc. and I bought the jar attachment for things like salsa, sour cream, etc. I hardly ever throw out bad food anymore since I got it. It's not as good for fruits and veggies, because they need to breathe, if that makes sense. The only thing I successly used it for was shredded carrots in a jar...they lasted forever!

Actually I thought they work well ONLY if you use them on your produce your refrigerate. Now room temp bananas....nah. But, my cherries, strawberries, grapes, do last about a week longer. I just have to make sure that all the air is squeezed out of the bags before I put them back in the fridge.

I just got these a few weeks ago. They do work on my strawberries, carrots, snap beans and asparagus but not so much with brocolli, peppers or bananas. I noticed that I have to get the produce completely dry - any moisture and forget about it. I'll have to try the damp paper towel/zip lock trick.
