Got my TIMESAVER DVD

Yeah, Beavs, tell us about your boss' bathroom habits!!! Oh, wait, that's not you.

Okay, now I get blasted about Divine and it all comes full circle!!:D

I lost? Did I miss the competition? Why are you so defensive? Have you ever read your posts through before hitting the post button? You do sound very angry and you are on the attack. It seems you think that your opinion or viewpoint are the only right ones. I believe you're right about something you mentioned. You are intolerant.

I said your post sounded a tad elitist to me. I did not call you an elitist. Perhaps I should have said "the wording of your post sounds racist or condescending". You generalized minorities in an unflattering way and I didn't like it or agree with it.

My dad was a sailor, not an officer. We wore thrift store clothes or hand made clothes, which worked just great for me. I never understood your implication that used clothing is undesirable. We did not travel the world. My dad's assignments were all here in the US and did not include housing often times not that base housing is anything to write home about. Yep. I ate tons of mac-n-cheese, Spaghetti-Os, peanut butter, etc. We drove used cars and our big night was getting to go buy a coke and a candy bar to eat with our pizza on Friday night. TMI? I know you're very interested in the history of those you never knew 400 years ago but don't want to hear about mine. Maybe if I were a different color it would be OK or not selfish to talk about my past? No, my grandfather wasn't lynched and didn't have to use a separate water fountain or bathroom but he suffered his own grievances coming from a German immigrant family. That didn't stop him from serving his country in the Navy during WWII. Oh, BTW, my grandparents didn't have any money in the military either but my grandfather went on to work for GE on an assembly line until he retired with food in his pantry, a small home he worked hard to buy and an American Flag that was flown every day and taken down at dusk. Oh, there I go again. Sorry to ramble but I'm very proud of my grandfather.

I don't post here often because of intolerance and rude behavior and I don't feel the need to insert myself into hundreds of threads. I have as much right to post my thoughts and opinions here as you do when I see fit. I do recall this being Cathe's forum and not Lauramax's forum.

I have tried to respectfully disagree with your remarks and share things with you you may not have considered but I now know my words fall on deaf ears. Good luck Laura. You can now move on to your next target.

Michelle

Oh OK, now you're personally attacking me. Typical for someone on the losing side of an argument. So, just so we're clear, you have no specifics re. why you thought my post was elitist (I'm sorry, was that YOU name calling, being angry, bullish & rude? :D:D:D). I don't remember any of your posts (probably there's a reason for that), however on one of the rare occasions you do post YOU were angry, & YOU were rude, & YOU insulted ME. But I suppose it's OK for you--evidently you get to set rules that you don't have to follow. Not that it's hypocritical or anything.

I'm not angry at all, although I do confess an intolerance for intolerance. I think you missed my point about selfishness--my point was that your world view is totally biased by your own experiences, & that you appear to be unaware of this, & that therefore your world view is egocentric. Get it now?

I suppose it'd be easy for someone whose great grandfather wasn't a slave or whose grandfather wasn't strung up by a lynch mob or whose parents didn't have to sit in the back of the bus or the back row of a movie theater or use separate water fountains & weren't allowed to eat in restaurants or VOTE to "move beyond the past, the name calling and bullying, the anger, and try to respect each other's differences."

Wait, I'm confused........your dad was in the Navy, you traveled around the world, but you were poor, wore thrift store clothes & ate mac & cheese every day? Hmmmmmmmmm.......

Still love this pic........

Melissa....I hear ya. I lived on Ramen noodles and Spaghettios for quite a bit of my service. I was stationed in Colorado, which has a very high cost of living. And I am pretty sure that all my friends I served with also lived on noodles and mac'n cheese.

As a former service member, I would love to chime in here;)! While it is true that a lot of service members get "free" housing, "free" college education, etc., it is also true that many don't. At most military bases, you cannot live in military base housing with your family UNTIL you are a certain rank. Ummm...isn't that backwards? Those who are higher rank and get paid more get the priveledge of living on base, rent free. Now, you can make the argument that the military gives an allowance to live off base. Those who have received that allowance know it doesn't come close to making up 1 - the deficit in cost of living and actual military pay and 2 - the cost of rent, utilities, etc. "Free" college education isn't actually so. For the GI Bill, you have to contribute $100/month for x number of months to then be eligible. You also have to use it within a certain timeframe or you lose the eligibility. While in the military, college can be covered. However, many service members can't take advantage because they don't have the time...just like their civilian counter-parts.

As I said, I am a former service member and also former wife of a retired service member. I was one of those lucky few that was on WIC and was actually qualified for food stamps, but was too "proud" to apply.

Many service men and women can make the lower pay rates work for them. It was difficult for us. And don't get me started on how difficult it was overseas where the cost of living is so much higher!

A simple google search will educate all those who don't believe that military families are considered low income or need food stamps. My "beef" is people who generalize based on their unique experiences and complete ignore any information which is contrary to that experience. The fact is there are military families who are struggling as low income families and do require assistance. There is nothing condescending nor patronizing in defending the truth. Why this got so nasty I will never understand.

Carrie- exactly the way it was for me. And on alot of the bases, the dorms for single service people are so old and falling apart, including base housing. That is if you are stationed somewhere with base housing. The cost of living you get comes no where close to actual cost to live. It was very hard to make ends meet. I just knew that my paychecks on the first and fifteenth were gone before I got them! And working 12 hour shifts didn't leave much time for schooling unfortunately.

Just want to chime in about the military thing. The range in pay and benefits is pretty huge. My dad was enlisted Air Force (and a pretty high rank) and I remember $ being tight until he retired and got work in the private sector. We DID shop at thrift stores and eat ramen noodles, and yes, we did travel the world too. When he left the AF, we were able to greatly improve our standard of living. OTOH, my BIL is a Major in the Army, and enjoys better pay than we ever did. I think the difference b/w officer pay/benefits and enlisted pay/benefits is pretty big.

Also want to chime in and say this is probably THE WEIRDEST thread I've ever seen here. It's like 20 wildly different conversations happening at once and somehow they all also make sense together. Oddness...

Yeah, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the Time Saver DVD.

I agree! Let's blame it on Tami. Tami come on over so we can blame you....:D :p

I KNOW! It is also a little like a car crash. Or a wrestling match. Or a car crash AT a wrestling match, hosted by Jerry Springer. Or...oh, I don't even know anymore.

a car crash AT a wrestling match, hosted by Jerry Springer.

Yes, with many pics of hot dudes and some vague references to eggs. I also have begun to worry about my affection for John Waters. Lots of "feelings" and "issues"...

And since you mentioned Jerry Springer, maybe now is a good time to remember the words of wisdom he always used to end his show: "Take care of yourself, and eachother". Good advice, and very appropriate for this thread.

Amy, you're so sweet (and funny).

And to the rest of you vets and kids of vets, WOW! Your posts have opened my eyes to a lot.

Same to you TeTe! Same to you.

I should add to my post about my dad not getting paid well in the AF. I do remember the tougher times (such as living in San Antonio and not being able to afford to turn on the A/C-crazy!). But over time he has greatly benefited and continues to benefit. He got his 20 yrs so he gets a nice retirement pay and all his health benefits (which he really uses). So even with the poor pay it's been a good thing.

And I'M angry & defensive? Holy moly! What a rant! But thanks for providing me w/your entire life history (I'll still keep mine private, thank you very much). You have got to be the rudest & "bullest" forum member I've encountered yet. Thank GOD you don't post here much!

I dunno, my army cousins got the free housing, college & insurance as PFCs. Three of my navy cousins even got grad school paid for. In fact, they tease me about it b/c I'm still paying off my student loans. Two of them are govmt contractors making six figures a year. I think the military, like life, can be what you choose to make of it.

Carrie & Amy, I apologize if I offended you in any way--I have the utmost respect for you both, I think you're intelligent, reasonable & very nice ladies. :)

OK Ladies, I have no clue what this thread is about since I have not read all of the posts. I was simply skimming through and just enjoying the scenery of the shirtless men - thanks for making my day

Let's return to the point of the thread, shall we?

Just because your cousins have done well in the military does not mean that it applies to everyone. You don't have 1st hand knowledge therefore you should stifle yourself. But I know with you that cannot be accomplished.

Amazing how many posts you do during the day while working your gov. job !
