Go wear fit or Heart rate monitor??

I want to know how many calories I need a day. I have done the equations and estimated the number, but I want to be more accurate. I understand the Go Wear Fit does this. I know that certain heart rate monitors show calories as well. What do you recommend? What is accurate? What about comfort and wearing the device? My daughter will be 2 in June and I would love to lose the last 5, it is about time. If you had to pick between GWF and HRM what would it be? Thanks!

I think in this case, it would be a matter of how much you can afford to spend! The GWF is not cheap, but you can get a good HRM that shows calories for under $100. I think both have their benefits.

The Polar HRM gives you a free website to track your workouts (if you get a Polar). GWF charges you per month to use their site.

For what you want, GWF is the better option. A HRM will really only calculate your activity. It's useful but you can better monitor your overall burn and calorie intake using GWF.

I agree with bonvivant. I have both a Polar F6 monitor (which tells calorie burn) and the GWF (got it a week ago!!). The Polar was ok at telling me what I burned during workouts (although that was even sketchy at times because it would lose my HR so often during intense workouts) but it was too uncomfortable to wear 24/7 and I don't think they are designed to do that. I had a huge eye opening experience with my GWF because I found that I burn hardly anything throughout the day at work. Even with my intense workouts, I wasn't burning what I thought I was. It's been a great motivator to keep myself moving and to really pay attention to what I am eating.

It's also got the awesome ability to track your sleep cycles. I have had terrible insomnia for years and the info that I've gotten from the GWF in the last week has been invaluable in dealing with my insomnia. If you have the $$ for the device, I highly recommend it!!

I have used the Gwoof since November and I do find certain aspects of it quite useful. However, I find its numbers somewhat suspect, as it really doesn't seem to be in line with actual effort. For instance, you can half kill yourself with a two hour weight training workout and get a grand total of 350 calories burned. You can go for an easy run or even a walk and get a huge number. For dancing, it says that I burn up to 750 calories an hour! It thinks Insanity is only somewhat vigorous, while kickboxing is hugely vigorous. It doesn't use heart rate as an indicator. Basically, it really rates certain types of movements as high calorie burners and others as very low, even though that is not the subjective experience and really doesn't match what other calorie-burn calculators would tell you. It rates steady state motion as burning more calories than interval-type motion. It is good for tracking sleep, but it will make you paranoid about not getting enough of it.

I also have a Polar, and find it very sensitive to your settings.

I have a bodybugg and while I find the above to be true (Insanity always pulls a low number for me, even Cathe's HIIT workouts do, as do weight training, etc) the bugg has single handedly been the instrument to help me lose just over 30 lbs. I think the overall day averages out. I highly recommend the bodybugg or GWF (hubby has that one and likes it!). Just a thought......
