Getting that coconut oil down...

So I've jumped on the coconut oil bandwagon too and here's my tip about how to get it down without wretching:

I put 2 TEASPOONS in a cup of hot chai! Yummy!

I have the Tazo chai mix from the Safeway (or you can get it at Starbuck's too). Mix 1/2 c of the chai mix with 1/2 cup of skim milk and heat in the microwave for about 1 - 1 1/2 minutes. Add in you coconut oil and voila! A yummy drink!

You can add more or less coconut oil as your tastebuds can tolerate. I just started with 2 teaspoons and hope to work my way up to the previously recommended amount from the other thread.

Do you think it would taste ok with green tea? I still haven't opened mine because I'm not sure how I want to eat it. I've heard it's good with peanut butter so maybe I'll try that today. Did you find it made a difference in your appetite?
Carolyn

You know, I've only tried it for a couple of days and I'm not the best example of respecting my body's signal for "hungry" and "OK, not hungry anymore" but I will tell you what happened the first day I tried it.

I put it in some juice and ws shocked to see it solidify up into two ball of wax looking things, so ai microwaved the whole thing up and managed to get it all down without gagging. I waited a half hour and then made myself a veggie burger sandwich and about halfway through the sandwich I really did start to feel full, as in, "I don't think I can eat too much more of this". Usually my lunch is a sandwich, a piece of fruit and a container of yogurt, but I gave up after the sandwich.

I didn't feel the munchies the rest of the afternoon.

Maybe I'm just imagining it, but I really did feel the signal for, "Stop eating, you've had enough." at lunch yesterday.

The same thing happened for breakfast today, and lunch again.

I don't know about the green tea. I though I would best tolerate the oil with stuff that would "match" it flavor-wise, if that makes sense.

I use to drink this stuff called "Bali-high chai" from the Borders Books. It is chai latte with a squirt of coconut syrup, so I thought, why not try the coconut oil in my own chai mixture?

I think putting it in a protein shake would be tasty too.

Hello, Will you keep us updated on your progress with coconut oil? Are you taking it to lose weight? I did buy some and have not really been taking it because it is hard to get down. Also I wanted to lose a few lbs before my Sept 1 trip and was worried that maybe it could have the opposite affect on me and I would gain weight eating 3 TBS of oil every day.

Thanks so much,
Winter

We could have a coconut check in thread - LOL!

I am trying to lose weight, I have always been trying to lose weight. I've been trying to lose weight since I've been 12 years old.

I do not have any exaggerated hopes for this, but I will give it a try and see what happens.

Today I weighed 173. I am 5'3" and 37 years old if that helps gauge where everyone else is. I do 4-6 Cathe workouts per week, between 1 hour - 1 hour 15 minutes per workout.

I put mine in my coffee this morning and it worked well. I did 1 tablespoon to one mug of coffee. That's and a warm cup of milk with it mixed in is the only way I can seem to get it down. Heck, I should lose weight just for the mental work it takes me to down it!

I do have to say though that I have experienced that appetite suppressant feeling...meaning it made me feel full sooner at supper last night.

Three tablespoons of coconut oil is roughly 360 calories? If you are restricting calories to any degree I would think adding almost 400 extra cals of anything might slow or stop your weight loss. You might need to cut calories from somewhere.

Ok, but does it TASTE LIKE COCONUTS??????!!!!! I dislike coconuts so I don't want to try it if it is going to taste like coconuts because I would have to put it in my smoothie (I don't drink hot drinks) and I don't want to ruin a perfectly good smoothie.

Thanks

Sparrow,

Have you tried the coconut oil? I'm assuming not. I have not cut calories and i've lost weight. And i know that others have too.

Perhaps all these people should just try it passing judgement.

How is it "passing judgement" to tell someone that if she is restricing calories and adds an additional 360 per day she might indeed gain weight? Look, if people like taking coconut oil that's their business. I just think telling people that there is "no way" they can put on weight while taking coconut oil is wrong. C'mon. As far as I know the old science of too many calories in = weight gain still applies.

That said, I do think this whole thread is staring to sound like some sort of coconut cult. Seriously, what makes coconut oil any different from the thousands of other "miracle" food products that have emerged over the years, products that turned out to be nothing special at best and dangerous at worst. (For instance, the claim that coconut oil is thermal and speeds up the metabolism to aid weight loss is a claim that has been made by several products over the years. In most cases this increase is so minimal as to be irrelevant.) As I said in another post, I read a bunch of the research, all of which is preliminary, short term and done on animals. The positive claims made about it may very well turn out to be true, but food science and research tends to require years of longterm study and results before definitive statements can be made. Just because some native islanders somewhere have ingested coconut oil for years with no ill effects that we can see does not mean it's a food miracle. There are thousands of other lifestyle habits of those islanders that would need to be considered in relation to their diet before researchers could say A+B=C here.

I couldn't begin to comment on the fact that you are taking coconut oil and losing/not gaining weight because I have no idea about your food/fitness/health choices beyond that.

The whole coconut oil thing sounds vaguely like reinventing the grapefruit.

Why do people continue to buy into the get skinny fast schemes? Aren't we more educated than that on these forums?

Sparrow, thank you for reminding us that that calories IN versus calories OUT is the time tested formula for maintaining a healthy weight.

Annette-
I don't think it tastes like coconuts. If it does, only mildly. When I first had some, I was disappointed because it wasn't yummy like coconuts.
I expect, if you put it in a smoothie, you won't know it is there. Kinda like an egg in a smoothie. BUT for you who doesn't like coconuts, I don't think I'd drink it in anything else. I don't like bananas and always get ths smoothie without the banana, and when I had the oil, I thought of you and thought you'd be able to still taste the coconut hint in a juice.
I cooked fish in the oil about a week ago (posted the recipe on a different thread) and that didn't taste like coconut at all. So you could still use the oil for stuff like that, too.
Sorry for the long post!

I'm wondering if I use coconut oil 30 minutes before a meal, in hopes it will suppress appetite. What's the point of adding it to food via protein shakes and spread on bread with peanut butter. Also, I'm wondering if it works the same once it's heated. We've all heard about how when oil is heated (too hot) it has all kinds of chemical reactions that make the food unhealthy. What do you think. I got some I put one teaspoon in with water and lime. I can't imagine increasing to a whole tblsp. Yikes!

Nicely stated.
Thanks for saving me the time (not that you intended to speak for anyone but yourself, but thanks just the same).

I think if anyone actually looks at the studies, which is what i'm saying. I have never ever read anything on grapefruit being a miracle weight loss food. Ever. And i have found NO studies to point that it contains anything other than vitamins (which are clearly good for you).

Now if you take the time to READ the studies, on pubmed, and other sites, of which i've given the names times over, you will see that these are studies done on humans (not rats) and the results are, i think you'll see, very impressive.

I have a problem when someone say's you'll gain weight. I find it scary that weight is the only issue. Health? But lets say weight is the issue (and i did originally start this thread about weight loss - not health) i think you'll find that if you talk to any endocrinologist you'll find out that calories in vs calories out (has some truth) but not much as much as people would think. And all it takes is some searching and talking to either, a) an endocrinologist, b) pubmed, c) other doctors with a history in health management not weight loss, and they will explain that fat and protein are the building blocks of human life. They are essential for life. So when you eat protein and fat, your body will use them (according to pubmed article, on the studie of fats and proteins in the humna body) as hormones, muscle, bone, tissue, metabolic function, etc... you'll see that these calories are first and foremost used as building blocks for the body not stored as bodyfat. Meaning that 200 calories from fats and proteins are used differently than 200 calories from carbs.

Just for information - there are no essential carbohydrates. NONE. There are essential proteins. And essential fats, but NO essential carbs (note - i did not say carbs are bad).

I'll end this rant, or CULT as someone said it sounded by saying a couple of things.

I honstly don't think i've eaten less calories. Perhaps some day's i do, but normally i think i either stay near the same or just over. I doubt i'm ingesting thousands over, more likey a couple of hundred. I have lost weight. My skin has taken on a texture like silk. It is strange as i normally have greasy/dry patches of skin. But best of all. I normally get colds really, really easily. In my life, once i start sneezing, i always get a cold. Last year i had 7. On Friday i started sneezing and feeling really rough. I had read that supplementing coconut can help in cold fighting, so i tried it and increased my doseage. When i woke up the next day. No cold. No sore throat (which i always get). I felt better. Miracle? Perhps not. Good anti-bacteria fighter? I'm certain. I'm not asking anyone to use coconut oil that doesn't wish to, but i honestly believe, from everything i've read (which is alot) that coconut oil can help in weight loss, but more importantly than that, it can and does improve health.
