Getting that coconut oil down...

What I started out doing with EVCO was putting a total of 2tsps on my toast with PB in the moring and 2 tsps melted in the mircowave in a small measuring glass (looks like a shot glass) and for 40 sec. then putting cold water in it so there wasn't alot to swallow and suck it down with a straw. That was the easiest way to get it down without noticing it was in there. Using 4 tsps per day I noticed nothing as far as my appetite was concerned.

Since then I have upped the amount to 1 TBS 3x's per day and I have to say that I have definately noticed a big reduction in my hunger and my consumption of food which is alot less. I can actually eat an entire chef boy ardee pizza with no problem and the other night I only ate 1.5 pieces (no I am not hugh :)) And I am very prone to my blood sugar dropping quickly even after a meal with lots of protein in it.

So so far so good but I have not seen any weight loss yet but then again that is kind of hard for me to gauge because I am about to start my period and I ususally lose 2-3#'s the week before I actually start.

You know, I'm not sure why, but I am really, REALLY hurt by this remark. I have no hopes of ever being skinny, and no hopes of ever being skinny quick.

I don't see the problem with trying something that doesn't sound dangerous to help me lose weight. I have always had the kind of body where anything I eat makes me gain weight. I am at a complete standstill. The scale just won't budge. I worry about food and being fat so much that I can't even bear it sometimes. I don't want to be like my grandmother and gain ten pounds every ten years that I can't ever lose.

I have always been overweight. I have gained and lost the same 25 pounds four or five times in my life and I'm sick of it. I am sick of being at the same dead end for months and years on end. I do all the right things, I exercise, I try to eat all the right foods, at reasonable portions and NOTHING WORKS.

I am tired of being told it's my fault, I am tired of being told I have to work harder, tired of being told "you can't change your genetics", I am tired of thinking about food and never feeling like I deserve to eat.

Yeah, I'm educated. I am also SICK OF BEING FAT DESPITE ALL MY BEST EFFORTS. It's not like I wake up in the morning and say, "Gee, what can I do that's really stupid to try and lose weight?"

If I want to try a couple teaspoons of coconut oil a couple times a day, it's my body, my waste of time.

Unless you know the heartache of a lifetime of being overweight (and I don't mean just 5 or 10 pounds) you have no way of knowing what "the other side" goes through.

For Christ's sake, I just want to lose some weight.

I am going to step in here against my better judgement. I see where you are coming from but I also see where the grapefruit/gimmick comment comes in. I think a lot of us are getting tired of hearing about the "magic bullet" - that one pill we can pop or supplement/food source we can add that will make us lose fat without any effort. Boloney! It's about work. Hard work. Garbage in has to be less than garbage out. It's about listening to our bodies. And let me tell you I am really skeptical of the things we can ingest that tell our bodies to shut the hell up. Namely, something that supresses appetite. Yikes, that sounds like a recipe for disaster.

After thinking about this further. I'm wondering how 36 grams of saturated fat could be good for anyone. Even if it does cut my appetite down a bit, I'm not sure adding "bad fat" in is a good idea. Although, I love the idea of having softer skin and hair that's in better shape. And, of course losing a couple pounds sounds lovely. I guess I would like to see some of the research. Where did you find your research icklemolkey? Or anyone else that has any info please chime in.
Thanks,
Heather

Just glancing through this site and saw lots of discussion on coconut oil. I believe saturated fats rich in medium chain fatty acids like those found in Extra Virgin Coconut Oil are beneficial. In the body, lauric acids in this oil convert to monolaurin that destroys viruses, bacteria and fungi. Certain fats actually help prevent clogged arteries and high blood pressure. It has also been shown to reduce symptoms of digestive orders and support immune function besides increasing metabolic rate. It does taste fine in green drinks and teas also. Take care.

how about eat when you're hungry & don't when you're not? you're purposely telling your body it can't have food when it's hungry? if you're eating clean and eating lots of minimeals it shouldn't be a problem.

Heather, I'm sure he would have responded to your question but here is what Wayne has posted before about this (this is from the thread titled "Weight loss tip" if you want to search it too):

"It is shocking that you've been told to avoid it. Shocking.

Coconut oil has been called the healthiest oil on earth. Dr Mary Enig, whom is a lipd researcher recommeds it whole heartedily. But rather than me typing oddles here for you to read, i will include some websites for you to look at.

www.coconutresearchcenter.org
www.organic-coconut-oil.com
www.coconut-connections.com

I really hope you look into this and start using this amazing oil.

No offense to those people who stated that it is better to listen to your body and eat when you are hungry, but aren't we all trying to supress our hunger when we eat cleanly? If it was all about calories, I could eat a few Snickers bars a day, but I would be starving. So that's why I eat brown rice and lean protein, because it fills me up faster and longer on the same amount of calories. Isn't using coconut oil, which is a natural food, not a pill, the same idea? (And I'm not attesting to any facts that coconut oil will definitely suppress appetite, I think this is an individual thing.) So some people will eat good fats (peanut butter, fish oils) along with lean protein and complex carbs to curb hunger, and other people will find that this might not work so they will try coconut oil. Why are we talking about coconut oil like it's some fake food?

Debbie -

It seems so obvious doesn't it? However, for a lot of us there is no connection between eating and hunger. When am I ever not hungry?

I have never known a time in my life when there was a connection between being hungry and eating and stopping when you're full.

The last part, "It shouldn't be a problem" is rather flip and dismissive as well.

Besides, I am a teacher and cannot eat several "minimeals" throughout the student day.

eminenz - sorry I didn't mean to offend. I try to take the approach of basic nutrition, but I realize other situations occur for different people. I am a social worker by profession & often went long periods without eating so I understand. I guess I just tend to look at these types of approaches as shortlived b/c you cannot live off of ingesting coconut oil forver, or can you? I have no idea so I won't say. If it works for you than that is a good deal. Sorry.

Debbie,

Thanks so much for your post. It means a lot to me.

I just don't know what to do anymore. I just don't know...

Debbie

What about people like me who always feel overly hungry even after I eat 2 chicken breasts and good healthy vegetables? Usually in one hour I feel hungry and have the shakes?

When this thread was started i (perhaps) had no carefully enough planned what i wanted to say about coconut oil. I originally said i used it for weight loss, which i did, and do, but i use it for health. To hear some people call it a bad fat is shocking.
I have included links on my posts, etc... for people to see, read and understand, yet still were getting bad fat, not good for you.

I supplement coconut oil in my diet because i like the taste, i loe what it does for my body (health) and i love the way i feel (more energy) plus i have lost weight (bonus). I now cook with the oil more and use less as a supplement, because my hair, skin etc... are all soft enough.

I wish people would read more info before saying something is not good for you, or worse, bad for you.

We (as humans)lived on a diet of fat and meat, with veg fruit, etc... for millions of years, and now, only in the past 10 thousand years do we eat grains. Fat is soooooooo important, yet we believe that whole grains are healthier. Non-sense. In evolution terms, our diet has changed more in the past 60 years than it has in the past 15,000. Genetics take longer to catch up than that.

Eat fat. Eat coconut oil. Eat real foods. And read the links.
