Getting Our Licks In!

I'm into my final week of STS meso 3! Chest and Back done yesterday evening after the karate tournament and squat legs done this morning. 3 cardios and Shoulders, Tri's and Bi's to go. Yippee!

Well, the karate tournament was amazing. I really didn't know what to expect so the whole experience was more then I imagined. It started at 10:00 in the morning and the Black Belt sparring was first, and that was really cool. Then it moved to advanced sparring. I sat and sat and watched and watched. Finally around 12 noon my group (intermdediate) was called for forms/katas. Oh boy! Finally some action! I performed my two forms, universal 2 and 3 and scored 94 out of 105 points! Not bad at all. Then a guy from my karate school went and he scored a 96. We took 2nd and 1st place. The other 5 competitors ranged from the low 70's to the mid 80's. Then I waited around a little while, and it was time for board breaking. Again, I scored a 94 out of 105 points and won 1st! And this was the one I was concerned with because you get only 2 tries at each board break. Got them all on the first try! Then around 1:30 it was time for sparring. I was the only adult female in intermediate division. So, I could have claimed 1st place by default and gone home, or move up to the advanced division. Well, I opted to move up to the advanced division. I figured the only way I was gong to learn anything was to go for it. There were a total of 5 women in this sparring match. My first fight I lost 4 to 0. Oh well, that's okay. Then thru elimination I ended up fighting again for 3rd/4th place. I'm not sure how that worked but I won! 3 to 2! The woman I fought hit hard, and I was like, "OK, I can take it, be prepared, cuz I can dish it out too!" So, I just kept thinking, "circle your opponent, stay light on your feet and be aggressive!" Yeppers, thats just what I did too! ;) So, I came home with 3 trophies! I have never in my life won a trophy, so I am just tickled to death and am looking forward to the next tournament. What a great experience. One strange thing, while I was waiting for the sparring match, I had a major 'deja vu' experience. I had done this before. But this was my very first tournament and to get that feeling when it was wrapping up was just strange, but cool! Can't wait for karate tomorrow!

ShadowPup, sending prayers and happy thoughts your way. Its sad to lose a loved one, but it sounds like your Grandmother had long and happy life. Lots of (((hugs))) to you. And take good care, and time to heal. I would be impatient to get back at it, and I have a feeling you are too. SO, take it easy, will ya?

Some men give up their designs when they have almost reached the goal; while others, on the contrary, obtain a victory by exerting, at the last moment, more vigorous efforts than before. Polybius (That was definately how I felt in my sparring match!)

Hi everyone,

Yesterday i decided to do an hour on the treadmill. Haven't used it in quite some time and it was a great feeling to have to lower my body weight on my user id.:) I was feeling some pain/soreness in my right hip/groin area and i thought it would feel better if i got moving on the treadmill but it seemed to irritate it more and it's still sore today. I'm going to try and stretch it out this evening. I don't recall hurting myself so i'm not sure what is going on.

Renee: Congratulations on competing in your first tournament! The fact that you managed to take home three trophies is pretty impressive. Maybe you practiced martial arts in a previous life and it's all coming back to you now.....or it could be all of your hard work too, i guess.:p

Deborah: My deepest sympathy to you on the loss of your grandmother. It's never easy to lose someone you are close to even if you feel it was her time to go. ((((HUGS)))) I'm so sorry you are having trouble with your back. :( Back injuries are very tricky and can take a while to heal so do what you need to do to get better.

Hello Everyone!!

On a massive and an incredibly embarrassing rampage to buy as many pumpkin jar candles as humanly possible.:p:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: Yes, I know - I'm insane. They make the house smell nice - like them burning - just the look of them and they burn up so quickly that I think I need as many as possible. Bought 3 more this weekend! Ok enough about candles - but did seem it was the only thing I managed to buy - can't get enough of them. I just love the deep rich pumpkin colors of the fall -and I love decorating the house with as much of it as I can. I will now change my name to Candlegal. Weekend was nice - put porch furniture away & winterized quite a bit - decorated for TG some more.

Laura - glad you are getting back on track - I had a rather good exercise week as well except for Thursday where I waited too long to exercise and did just the leg porition of KB-4DS. Oh well - I'm working on it.

Janie- Congrats on petting the pups. I'm proud of you - you did not show fear and you did it!! I don't have much experience with Bull Mastiffs - big dogs can be scary - but I do think that if you take the time to get to know them - it won't be so scary anymore. Good job!

Michelle - good to hear from you - all the way back from NO and you got the boat almost all packed up - and getting Ripken his walks in. I say things are back on track - good job on your exercise while away - that can be tough.

Shadowpup - so glad you are back with us - we did miss you here. I can't tell you how sorry I am about your grandmother. Big Hug to you. There really aren't any words but you have my sympathy.

I know that a back injury is the worst - hang in there. I know you know that you have to be very diligent about taking care of it - so I won't lecture you but please do take care of yourself. We know that live sometimes gets in the way of a little check in - no sweat - you are a big part of us.

Got to go quickly - will be back a little later to finish personals.

Hi! I had a nice weekend although I didn't get any exercise in. I did clean the house for 6 hours on Saturday and then went out on the town with some girlfriends! Then Sunday was my book club, which I had at my house so spent the day getting ready and had a lovely evening (in candle light) with my friends.

Tonight is Pilates & Ski Conditioning.

Shadowpup: Although it was so nice to hear from you I am sorry for all that you have been going through. It does sound like you are managing to deal with the hardships with grace. I send love to you in your time of loss. I know how hard it can be...especially when you can't exercise like you are accustomed to help regulate your mood through the good feeling endorphins!:confused: At least I know from my own injury that I came to realize how much exercise did help me feel better, regulate my mood, and keep me motivated and productive in all areas of my life. Congratulations on saving your project!

Janey: The PNW is supposed to have a snowy year? I have heard that Colorado is going to have a cold, windy, dry winter. I can imagine nothing worse than that! I say bring on the snow! Leave the wind!

Michelle: ahhh the end of summer most feel official when you winterize your boat! Before we know it you will be posting about getting the boat ready for the summer! I can't believe how fast the time goes! Are you done with STS?

Renee: I saw your post on FB! Congratulations! You should feel very proud of yourself. Especially for winning in a division above your level! That is truly something amazing! You are such a motivation to me to relish and embrace my power and strength unapologetically! Something that more woman need to embrace!

ElleP: you know I have a similar flair up on my left side of my groin/inner thigh. I have no memories of injuring it but it is feeling 'tweaky' for lack of a better term. Awhile ago in the thread we talked about the aches and pains of being an active (dare I say) older person. There was a word that Michelle had for it that I can never seem to remember....

Shoegal: I agree with you about the wonderful, homey smell of pumpkin candles! I have some myself! The legs on 4DS are something else aren't they?

Ok I'm back -

Elle - didn't see your post when I posted - we must have been posting around the same time!! I get all kinds of aches and pain everywhere. One thing flairs up and then something else - and like you said - I have no memory of injuring anything. With my back - I could just be standing - and BAM!!! the slightest of movement feels like I've knocked something way out. Just be careful and work around the pain and opt out of anything you think might aggrivate it.

Renee - goodness - I didn't see your post either - I must have been out of it this morning. I saw Janie's comment on that she wanted more details but completely missed your post. Congratulations on your fabulous performance at the tournament. How exciting!!! When you get done with STS maybe Cathe's new workouts will be out - that would be a great reward for all your hard work!!

Not sure what I'll end up doing tonight - I liked the 4DS rotation - maybe I'll do a high step rotation this time around. I'm really enjoying mixing the cardio & weights.

I was curious if any one had used or purchased the workout blender? I guess you have to have the downloads to use it, but it looks like fun! Maybe next annual gift I might buy the whole DVD set and get the blender as well....

I woke up being really dizzy and nauseous so I called my doctor and she told me to go to urgent care. They said I had vertigo. A virus in the inner ear. He gave me meds and I already feel better. Tomorrow I'll try working out.

Renee, You are so close to finishing Meso 3. Well done!

Congratulations for winning and taking home 3 trophies. Wow! I bet you feel on top the world. How cool is that:cool:? I'm so proud of you going for winning two intermediate tournaments but the advanced fight and you won. I'm amazed. Maybe in another life you did Karate before, perhaps that's why you got deja vu.

Elle, An hour on the treadmill is a loooooong time. Good for you. Congratulations for losing some body weight. Yeah! I think your right, a needed stretch is in order to help with the hip/groin area.

Shoegal, You are so cute. Candles are awesome. Get as many as you can, if you burn as many as I do, well then, maybe we're both just a little off. Who cares, enjoy it.

I agree, with the dog petting and treats. Eventually we'll all get to know one another and things will be better.

Laura, Wow! A 6 hour house cleaning. That takes a lot of energy. But, oh, I bet the house is wonderful. The rest of the time sounds like you enjoyed yourself with friends by candlelight. Cool. Have a good time with Pilates & Ski Conditioning.

Yes, the weather people say it will be a snowy Winter. I don't like wind either, I'd also prefer anything but that, oh and ice. Don't like that either.

Wish i could help you with the blender, but I don't have it. If you get the blender, let us know how you like it.:)

Take care everyone,

Janei

My ache seems to be gone. I stretched and i feel good so i'm not sure what was going on. I don't really consider myself old enough to start getting aches and pains so maybe i just overstretched it in one of my yoga classes on Sunday.

I won't get to do any yoga tonight since i'm going to see Wicked. I'm looking forward to it since i wasn't able to see it last time the show was in Toronto and it's only back here for a limited time.

Shoegal/Candlegal: I love pumpkin candles!!!! I also love pumpkin pie. Pier One Imports had some nice smelling ones last time i was there. Their candles seem to last quite a while.

Janie: You are really lucky you are feeling better so soon from your vertigo. One of my students had vertigo and it lasted a few months where she could barely come to class. I'm glad your case wasn't as severe. Hope you are back to yourself in no time at all.

Laura: Sounds like you had a busy weekend. What book is your club reading?

Last night did High Step Circuits. I actually hated doing that very simple little step routine at the beginning of each circuit - don't know why - but was thankful that we only did it 4 times. Loved every other part of it especially the leg presses. Tonight - High Step Training - the following night: High Step Challenge - and after that I think I will have run out of High Step workouts. I just might do a premix on Thursday.

Laura - no workout blender for me but have been reading some people's impressions. Some say it is quite slow - and it takes some time to put a workout together and there are still some bugs to work out. I just have to wonder about buying all of these downloaded versions of workouts I already have and I'm not sure I want to be bothered - well, right now anyway. But I do think that in the future we will have no choice but to download the workouts - so might as well jump on board.

Elle - Enjoy Wicked!! What a great evening out!! I am glad your ache went away - it is good it didn't sideline you in any way. Unfortunately, I love pumpkin pie too - but geeze the points in one slice!!! I'm really trying to watch it with eating - right now I actually think I'm a little bit hungry!:eek:

Janie - Vertigo - oh my - hopefully you feel better today. I've never had it but it doesn't sound like fun. Did you manage to work out??? I'd actually give yourself some time to heal.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Hi! Just finished my Pilates class. It has become a super beginner group so not really doing Pilates; more like pre-Pilates. Any I could really feel my classes from last night! Than I jumped on the treadmill for 45 minutes. I decided to do a pre-program that was cross training instead of Cardio Coach just to change it up a bit....

Janey: Virtigo is not fun! I am glad you got it taken care of so quickly.

Elle. Glad the mystery pain went away! Boomeritis was the word I was looking for the other day! It is supposed to refer to all the aches & pains of the active boomer generation! And although I am no where near the age I like the term. Actually the woman in my ski conditioning class (whom are all older than me) were all sharing their Boomeritis aches & pains last night. Oh well, What can we do?? Use it or lose it right?

Yesterday two of my buddies at work were celebrating birthdays so i treated our department to cheesecake since all three of us LOOOOOOVE it.

I got three different kinds: Pumpkin, Candy Cane, and Red Velvet and they were all delicious! I sacrificed a lot of points for the indulgence but it was well worth it and everyone in the office enjoyed it too except for the couple of "weirdos":p that don't like cheesecake. I made sure to give any leftovers to the birthday girls to avoid eating any more.

I also went out for a nice dinner before the show so i really need to watch what i eat for the rest of the week.

Wicked was a great show and my seats were very good. I enjoy doing things like that. When i was with my ex he had no interest whatsoever in the theatre or going out much at all. He would always tell me to go with a friend or my mother. His idea of going out would be to go to a bar and watch a UFC fight and he would get angry that I didn't want to drink beer and watch guys beat each other up. Anyways, i really enjoyed the show and recommend it if you haven't already seen it.

Shoegal: You are on a High Step Kick! I have High Step Challenge but haven't done that one in a long time. Enjoy!

Laura: My Wednesday class has a lot of "super beginners" too but i've been pushing them and they are progressing...I even taught them headstand last week:eek: and they are off to a great start now. I modify whatever i can but keep encouraging them to try the poses the "regular" way periodically so they know when they no longer need the modifications.

Didn't get to post Monday or yesterday, so first the report on my exercise for the week: Monday, STS disc 28, chest and back; Tuesday, HIIT 40/20 and ab circuits stability ball workout; today, week 2 squat rack legs. Yup, the term is boomeritis and I've definitely got traveling boomeritis. Right now it's in my left elbow. I haven't done the stability ball ab circuits workout in a while. I forgot how challenging it is. I'm always rolling of the ball at the end. And I only managed to do 4 good inverted pikes--so I might be doing that workout as an add-on for the next couple of weeks, just to get myself back up to snuff on those pikes. But I still can't keep up with Cathe on those. And I have yet to attempt a j roll-in with the top leg extended. Anybody here able to do those?

Elle: very strange about the twinge in your groin when you were running on the treadmill, but thank goodness it hasn't bothered you again. Did you enjoy Wicked?

Laura: no workout blender for me yet either. All things in due time. I did purchase 2 electronic workouts to make it easier to take my workouts with me when I'm on travel. Just doing that has been an education for me. For Cathe's new workouts, I did purchase the dvds and the electronic files. Chris, Cathe, and their crew seem to be on the front edge of the technology power curve on these media which I think just further reflects the flexibility and creativity of their enterprise. I talked to Chris a little bit at the roadshow and was really impressed with his thoughts on the use of technology in the industry and the way they approach the set designs.

Shoegal: now I know you would consider this a major holiday faux-pas, but I've contemplated started to pull out my Christmas decorations and getting things up a little early. I know that is by-passing the whole fall/Thanksgiving thing but I don't decorate for fall anyway. I do enjoy hearing about your decorations though. The pumpkin candles sound nice. Once I get done with STS at the end of the month, I might do a high step week, but then I'll have those new step workouts to do too. Ahhh--once again, so many Cathes and so little time.

Janie: vertigo is no fun. I'm glad you went to the doctor quickly. One of my neighbor friends had a touch of vertigo over the summer and she was nauseous through the whole episode.

Sister: Congratulations on finishing STS last night. Did you sleep in this morning?

Shadowpup: hope you are feeling better. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
~michelle

Did TBS with my Joey yesterday, and today will take out Rolly for a walk, it's so beautiful today.

The vertigo I had is now gone. I know, I'm a very lucky person. I saw what it can do to people when I searched about it. Someone is watching over me big time.

Shoegal, Great job on HSC. Always a great workout in my opinion. Well done.

Laura, Great job on your classes and the treadmill. I love changing up things too.;)

Elle, Love cheesecake too! Me too, about watching what I eat for the rest of the week. A little indulgent with bread lately. I'll look for "Wicked" Joey and I go out to a play or theater about every other month or so.

Michelle, Great job on your exercise during the week. Boomeritis, at least you know it has a name. Hope it gets better. I can't do one inverted Pike yet, but I'm working on it.:) Maybe one day, hopefully, a J Roll.

Something I've been working on.

I've been keeping my home sourdough starter (LIL) alive for months now, and decided to bake bread from it. Here are a couple of pictures.

393284842.jpg

Used a hot oven, at 450 degrees. I did spray it with water and put the lid on it for the first 20 minutes in the oven. Then finished baking it another 25 minutes. These are really big loaves, and used my own recipe.

393284839.jpg

My crumb has never been this large before. Maybe I'm getting the hang of it. Now to get blisters and a perfect crumb together.

When I took the loaves out of the oven, it snapped, crackled and pop. I love that!

Last night I did a little shortened version of High Step Training - used the workout blender to make a little premix of my own. The WB included on the DVD - not the new downloadable version. I forgot that there are leg presses in every single circuit. Whew!! Still love doing them - but after awhile I was sorry to see them come around yet again. Tonight - High Step challenge!!!
I'm not sure how well I'll do but I love working on my strength.

Rex and I will go out tonight for fun - it is our weekly wine & cheese night. He has been gone for a couple days on business so it is good to have him back.

Michelle - actually - you are right - I don't work on Christmas until TG is over - but I definitely see where you are coming from. I have to admit that I am contemplating doing just that  because I have such a difficult time getting my pencil tree "Claire" up every single year. It would be a MAJOR load off if I got it done right out of the gate. But I would keep her in the back room so nobody would really see that I had some Christmas out.

Janie - so glad that Vertigo is gone!!! It is nice that you and Joey & Rolly got out for a walk & worked out!! Just saw the picture of the bread. All I can say is YUM!!!!

Elle - Oh gee that cheesecake sounds wonderful. Who could not love cheesecake?? It is good that you are getting out and doing the things you love - if you don't enjoy little things like that in life then what else is there??? That is why I like to make an effort with the ho liday decorating - while I do love doing it - I also believe it makes the holidays more of an occasion because I cared enough to make it a little more special. At least, I think it does.

Well - hello to Laura, CatChick & Shadowpup!!

Good Morning Ladies,
It's Remembrance day here. I guess that's the equivalent to the US memorial day (?). All the banks and government offices are closed so traffic was so light this morning.

I haven't gone on the treadmill since Sunday's workout but have been keeping up with my yoga and i haven't had any other aches or pains (fingers crossed).

Do any of you have any Ellen Barrett workouts? I received a new Collage catalogue and she caught my eye. Any thoughts or comments on her workouts?

Shoegal: Since our Thanksgiving is in October, Christmas decorations go up by the second week of November in all the public places like malls etc. I'm aiming to get mine up next weekend. Hope you enjoyed your wine & cheese night. I'm not a big fan of wine but i do like cheese!:D

Janie: Glad to hear you are feeling better. Your bread looks like it would be delicious served warm with butter. Enjoy!

Hi to everyone else! Have a great day.

Tried to check in yesterday but lost it somehow!:mad::rolleyes:

Yesterday I did a Superset style workout for my Total Tone class. I had a nice turn out which always motivates me more!

Today it is snowy and slushy down here in Boulder and I am feeling like curling up on the coach all day. I am going to try and motivate to the Rec center for some cardio though...I have a lot of stuff to do before having to get the girls at 2pm and take them to their violin lesson and then straight to Ballet and then to a meeting for Ski Team! Busy, Busy!!

I read all the posts last night but can't remember all the details so I am going to skip the personals today so I might have time to get my workout in!

Have a great day!

Well, it's over. I tried walking in the wood with Rolly, and there are so many puddles that we can't cross over. That's it until they are dried up. Rolly has been really good lately about going potty outside. He hasn't been on a leash all week. He goes on his own and with my gentle reminders.

Joey and I did TBS using heavy weight. Also did abs from "All Abs" and a ball stretch from Cathe. It was wonderful.

Shoegal, Great job on your premix workout. Good luck on HSC tonight. Enjoy your wine and cheese night with Rex, sounds heavenly.

Elle, Every thing here is closed too, at least if it involves the Gov. Yoga is great to keep pains away. Such a great way to get in balance, stamina and stretching all at the same time. Glad you are feeling better.

Laura, Love to hear you have a nice turn out with your classes. Hopefully your won't have a hard time this year with the snow. Fingers crossed for ya.

Have a great rest of the day everyone,

Janie

Wednesday I did HSC - the 51 min premix and last night I choose the 69min #12 premix off of the 4DS: HIS/LIS disc. It was a circuit workout and a great one to do since it fit in with all of my other workouts this week. I looked like I had taken a dip in a pool after I finished it. It felt great!!:)

So glad it is Friday!! I have a nice little party to go to on Saturday night - I have been looking forward to it all week. We have also been thinking about going to the German Chirstmas market that is going on in Harmony this weekend.

Our tv in the living room crapped out and it was the television that DH usually uses. We set about getting it fixed but unfortunately, it is going to take longer than we had expected so this minor inconvenience has turned into a major one. Rex has taken to watching his everning tv on the little tv in the kitchen. My world really hasn't been altered - I workout with the tv back in my room - and he doesn't go back there. We are talking about buying a new one - but that would also involve buying new furniture too - which would be more money -not sure what is going to happen but Rex seems to be at the end of his rope.

Just wanted to check in quickly - I hope everyone has a great weekend!!!:)

Happy Friday!

I am so excited to see this Friday come. As a reward to finishing STS for a second time, some friends and I are going out for pizza, beer and bowling! This is a major treat for me. While doing STS I never drink alcohol...love beer, but it doesn't look good on me. So even when I do drink now, I tend to drink in moderation. But I may over indulge just a wee little. Then again, I may not. Won't know until the time comes. But I'm excited to cut loose!

Janie, your bread looks GREAT! Another thing I don't eat much of: bread. Glad you are way out west, with your tempting baked goods. Hope you enjoy eating them as much as you obviously enjoy making them. :)

Active recovery starts tomorrow. Not sure what step routine I'll do, but I am looking forward to a week without weights. Then, the new DVD's will be out and I can hit it HARD again!

Have a great day everybody!

~Renee~
