For Cathe- Concerned w/Muscle LOSS & Longer Cardio DVDs

Dear Cathe-

I was hoping to get your professional opinion on this. I have done some reading that suggests that doing cardio sessions for more than 45-60 minutes can promote muscle loss. Yet you, your crew, and loyal fan base seem to be in or getting in great shape?!

I have all of your DVDs from current to Intensity Series (new Cathe Fan here, still learning the moves). I really want to to be able to work myself, stamina, and muscle endurance up to your longer workouts like Body Max 2 and Drill Max. However I also want to lose fat and gain muscle.

What is your opinion about working out for such a long time and how it effects muscle loss/gain? Is it just about eating more protein after? I am working my way up to heavier weights to gain muscle, but don't want my cardio to hinder my progress. Currently using Hardcore Series mainly.

Sorry for going on and on, but I'm really confused and not sure what information I should abide by.

Thank you so much! :D

Good question! As I push closer to age 50 I've noticed that I still have the endurance for the longer workouts, but I'm suffering more injuries (knee, ankle, ...)and wonder if keeping the cardio shorter wouldn't be better for me than sitting out because of pain. x(

Bumping too--am about to start training for a marathon in a few weeks (the training starts in a few weeks, not the marathon LOL), and I'm curious to know whether the increased cardio will cancel out any strength gains from my strength workouts...

I really hope that is not the case! We work so hard when using her DVDs (both strength and cardio). I hate the thought of stopping her rotations....

Bumping in hopes for a response.
I was wondering also about not only working out more than 60 min. but how often should you do cardio per week if you want to shed a few lbs. and also build muscle. Will too much cardio stunt your muscular progress?

A quick interview with Tom Venuto. Here's a snip:

CB:
Another area of debate is the use of cardio during muscle-building programs. What’s your opinion of doing traditional cardio training when a client is trying to build as much muscle as possible?

TV:
Cardio should be kept to an absolute minimum on muscle building programs. In some cases it can be dropped completely. I prefer to keep three days a week for 20 minutes year round. I like the way it makes me feel and I believe it helps me stay leaner while gaining muscle without interfering with my gains.

When the fat loss season arrives, there is a progressive and gradual increase in cardio frequency, duration and intensity. I don’t recommend high volume cardio year round. It’s too easy to adapt to high volume cardio. Cardio should be periodized just like strength training.

People who are strongly opposed to aerobics often like to use aerobics instructors as the example of why “cardio sucks.” “Why did a survey reveal that the average aerobics instructor has twenty-something percent body fat? Why aren’t they leaner?” The answer is because they don’t periodize their cardio like bodybuilders do. Lay off the cardio when you want to gain muscle. Gradually increase and build to a peak when you want to get ripped. Your body will be more responsive this way when you do add in the cardio.

The idea of periodizing cardio is pretty neat. I'm a former member of the "Do The Same Thing Every Day" club, so this is all pretty new to me. I dig it though.
