Well, it's getting closer to my vacation week and I'm not sure what I'm going to do about my workouts. I'm on a good roll, my motivation is up, I'm seeing results and now, I leave for Florida in three weeks and I'm nervous. I won't have access to my dvds or equipment and we're driving up to Macon, GA from Florida for a couple of days for my niece's wedding. I know that while at the hotel, I can use their gym - it's a Hilton, they have to have one! Just not sure what to do the rest of the time. I was thinking I could at least go for a brisk walk every day and come in and get some abs and pushups in, but that's about it. I'm not a runner, so that won't do. I just don't want to see myself go backwards, but I want to be able to enjoy myself as well.:(

I'm also afraid of losing my momentum when I get back. I tend to fall off the wagon when my routine gets messed up. So, I'll need some help from anyone who can give me some suggestions, continued motivation, and a lift to get up off my butt when I get back home!:)

I always take some bands with me on vacation. You can work just about anything with a set of bands - tris, bis, shoulders, even legs - "firewalkers" anyone? :) And a good band will not take any space at all in your suitcase!

When I travel for work I bring my dyna band, go jogging, and do push ups but since you don't jog I would suggest that you use the hotel gym and focus as hard as you can on clean eating choices. I know that it is so hard to eat clean when you eat out AND when you are on vaction. I like to print out menu's from restaurants that I plan on going to in advance. I also suggest walking as much as possible.
I know what you mean by momentum. I've been there before too. Another thing that has helped me get back on the band wagon is making a schedule of workouts that I plan to do when I get back. I've even signed up and paid for kickboxing classes so that I couldn't back out. Taking pictures of my progress (the camera does not lie) and writing down goals has also helped.
Most importantly have fun. This IS your vacation. Don't overstress yourself just try to keep moving and walk everywhere.
Oh I also love to do crossfit.com workouts when I travel because you can do a lot of the workouts without much equipment.
Hope you have fun!!

Thanks Liann! I'll be sure to throw one in my bag! I don't know why I didn't think of that! Silly me!

Janie:

Thanks for the ideas! I've never heard of crossfit.com, but I'll check it out. I have been noticing posts about "clean" eating. I'm pretty new to this, so if you don't mind giving a little education, I'd appreciate someone telling me exactly what that is. I would guess it's low fat, low carb foods??

Oh boy you'll probably get a whole lotta different answers about clean eating, but my idea of clean eating is eating foods in their most natural state. 6 small meals. Whole grains non of that white processed stuff which includes sugar.
Of course just because it is clean doesn't mean that you can eat as much of it as you want but when you eat 6 small meals a day and increase the amount of veggies you eat you are never starving. Another important principle is drinking a heck of a lot of water.
I've never been a fan of the low fat stuff because I feel that when something is taken into the low fat state it actually takes it out of its natural state but I'm sure others would disagree with me on that. I just prefer organic cottage cheese and diary products versus the low fat stuff. Low fat stuff just looks and tastes strange to me. I also just try to recognize when I'm feeling full and try not to eat past the point of satisfied.

I do quite a bit of travelling, using hotel gyms, and the quality really varies. It helps if you call ahead and find out what's available. Some have very nice weight rooms, and in others - well, let's just say I've worked out on a creaky exercise bike next to a broken washing machine :)

CardioCoach has been a terrific help for me in keeping the intensity up on the road. You might check that out - he's having a sale. You can download the workouts to your mp3 player if you have one.

Also, kickbox is a good workout that can be done in a small space. Sometimes the hotel will be able to lend you a dvd player (again, calling in advance helps, since most don't).

Good luck and enjoy! There's a lot to be said for just trying out new fun activities on vacation rather than bringing along the usual exercises. I hope you have a terrific time.

I am leaving for FL next Mon and Im not really that nervous. I think a vacation is just that...a vacation. But, I also don't have the tendency to not workout. I know that when I get home I will jump right back into it. There is a gym in the town we are staying at so I am going to take advantage of their equip, If I can get a hour long run in, I will be o.k. Not to mention, I will be on the move quit a bit. If there was no gym, then yes...I would be nervous!

Don't worry about it and enjoy your trip. There is plenty of time to get back into it when you return home.

Lori:)

Wow! I don't know, no white processed stuff? If that includes pasta, rice, etc. I'm in trouble! I drink a lot of water - one thing I developed a habit for when on Weight Watchers years ago! I guess I'll just have to take it one baby step at a time! Of course, could I substitute whole grain pasta for white pasta? I might be able to survive that way!

Thanks for your input and suggestions!:D

Yeah, I've changed everything that was white and processed to whole grain. Whole grain bread, brown rice, and whole wheat/grain pasta are staples in our house. It took some getting used to. To get my kids used to it I did half half. Half white bread, half wheat or half white rice and half brown half white pasta and half whole wheat. Now we've gone 100% whole wheat/grain everything. A little warning cooking whole wheat/grain products takes longer than white stuff. You can do it. You are so right one step at a time. :)

Cardio Coach has the PUMP workout that you can totally do with bands (just be sure to get some good heavy ones - the kind with handles are great too). There is also something called FitDeck - they are cards that will give you a workout with bodyweight and bands, for hotel rooms I think (or travel), office, etc (there are lots of options that they have.) Try to keep the eating as clean as possible, get your heartrate up with cardio and do some toning, and remember that your body probably could use a little break anyway and as soon as you get back, you will be nice and ready to jump right back into it all! Have fun :)

Do you have a portable DVD player or a laptop? What I do is take my DVDs that don't require any equipment (like KPC and Kickmax) and my resistance bands. As someone else suggested Cardio Coach is great also you just download it to your ipod and you're ready to go.
