Facebook an online shop for thieves

Very interesting article. I joined facebook to keep in contact with my family in Puerto Rico and it has been wonderful for that. I can see what they are up to and vice versa. Then I started reconnecting with old high school and college buddies, and that was great too. Now I get friend requests by people I vaguely remember or do not remember at all. I deny them, but my husband accepts all the time. I'll have to show him this.

Thanks! I love FB for keeping in touch but I never respond to friend requests from people I don't know, period. And there have been quite a few! Half the people look like porn stars and the others all seem to be super religious. :D

I know exactly what you mean Lori. I joined to keep in touch with family and had pics posted, . . .and then I just deleted everything because I thought it was not worth some creepy person trying to track us down. I think it is better to be safe than sorry. Did you all hear about this story of the 11 year old girl that was abducted 18 years ago and found.

Breaks my heart to think of what psycological damage those jerks must have inflicted upon her.

I think it's good to be cautious on Facebook (and with anything else internet related). I'm also on facebook, but I have my privacy settings set as such that only my "friends" can see what I post. I also have it set up so no one can search for me.

I don't understand people who put their phone numbers and addresses on facebook, especially if you have an open account (one that anyone and everyone can look at). I think that's just asking for trouble. If someone wants to get a hold of me, then they will know my number, and if they don't there's the good old fashioned phone book! :D

Good thread ... I think it's definitely smart to err on the cautious side.

I am also very conservative on facebook. I only friend people I know and I'm very careful about what I post. I also try to be very careful about what I click on. I also don't provide too much information. Just doesn't seem wise to me.

BTW--for the Cathe Nation faithful--if you are on facebook, you need to be aware that the site is known for having problems with bad guys trying to convince you that you have been infected with a virus/trojan horse/etc. Twice this week, I have had a message pop up on my computer informing me that I have been infected with various viruses and trojan horses and instructing me to download and run a file to fix it. It wasn't a message from my Norton 360 protection or my spyware, so I was immediately suspicious. It's not real. Do not download the file or run it--it is simply a ploy to infect your computer. If this happens to you while in facebook, go to the task manager and shut down all the programs that are running and start over.

Bottom line: be careful out there.
