They are such a massive selling market at the moment, helping you with your work life, your love life. how to make milliions and the lists go on and on with proberly every problem you have, fixed by reading a "self-help" book.

I have to admit to being a comsumer occasionaly and have on my book shelf Think and Grow Rich
The only way to stop smoking
Woman who love to much
and a assortment collected over the years, books on Parents and Teens

God knows I have bought, read. and given away alot more than what Ive kept.

Have they helped me?

Some have been too ridiculous, others, a complete waste of money, but most, a very entertaining read..................but I will properly still buy the next "best seller" just incase it changes my life

Has any "self- help" book inspired you to change ANYTHING in your life?

Oh sure - I've read a few. One that was actually very helpful to me was called, "Tongue Fu!" It helps you develop skills in dealing with other people, so you can help defuse a difficult encounter with someone, or at the least - not escalate it. I have a natural tendency to blurt out things when I'm cornered, so this has helped me to either say the right thing, or know enough to keep my mouth shut.

Another goody, "How To Behave, So Your Children Will Too" taught me that it's better to be a firm (not necessarily strict) parent than a friend.

I've listened to "The Power of Positive Thinking" on audio. This is by the same guy who did "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People". I started "Habits", but didn't really get too into it. I'm not really interested in becoming "Highly Effective", seems like it causes too much stress.

I bought Optimal Thinking or something like that. It teaches you to do the "optimal" thing in every aspect of your life. I think I gave it to charity. You know, I think you have a set personality and unless you are highly motivated these self help books are a lot of bs. Just my opinion though.

Parenting books are another story, but how to change your life stuff is a little unrealistic.

Did anybody see Oprah when the guy was on with the title "He's just not that into you" Now I think this is a great book for single women. I am happily married, but I wish I had this book in my late teens, early 20's! Cleaning books, organizing books, parenting books, I think those are great. It's the Power of Positive thinking stuff, and personality stuff that is hard to achieve. Just my .02

My most favorite self-help book I "read" lately was:
the Cathe catalog

THAT'll change your life (and quite possibly your finances... LOL);)

The last self-help book I read was Good "ENOUGH" Housekeeping. If I can read anything about saving time and effort on cleaning I will buy it:7 !!

The few times I have bought or tried to read self-help books it seemed they all said the same thing. Most of it was either common sense or just plain drivel - expect a miracle kind of stuff. I think life is a lot more complicated than the "do this and you'll be fine" stuff these books offer.

Yes, I must confess that I am a self-help junkie.

I have the Tony Robbins Personal Power CDs (make me feel good and powerful). I have Deepak Chopra tapes and books (his voice is soothing to me). I have Dr. Phil books (for when I need a kick in the rear-end). I just got the Wayne Dyer "Power of Intention" CDs. I have the 4 Agreements book (not that I remember what they are right now). Essentially, if they've been on Oprah -- I have their book/CD/whatever. By now I should be the most knowledgeable, calm, and powerful person on earth. Unfortunately, I don't do any of the little exercises that they want you to do (ie, procrastination seems to be one of my problems). So, I still suck :) Just kidding, I think I'm a pretty well-rounded person. But that's probably what crazy people say too :)

Do I believe all the crap? Nope. Do I always learn a little something, either about myself or about other people? Yes. I really believe I take a little something away from everything I read. Even if it is simply a decision to disregard everything in the book.

Someone once told me, "I don't want to spend my entire life cleaning up dirt and dust only to get buried 6 feet beneath it."

I like that attitude!
:D

I've read a bunch of Self-help books, and they've helped me. It seems that I take a few little things away from each book. I've learned a lot about "me" and how I come across, and how I can come across better. I've learned quite a bit about how to read body language by trying to improve my own through self-help books. I've learned a little about feng shui, as well.

But, I agree...the best self-book I've read recently is Cathe's catalog!!! Without a doubt!!!

Oooooh! Don't you wish Cathe would write a book?!! Talk about a best seller.

(In her copious free time, of course.:p )

I've read many of these types of books & yes, I get something from everything I read. But the only ones I REALLY enjoyed reading were the ones about fitness/health. And how to clean without really doing much. LOVE those! ;-)
