Did Slumdog deserve best picture??

Vee, I am so glad you posted. I was hoping that you would. It was nice to hear your perspective on the movie as well as others from that culture. I didn't realize also that it was filmed on a shoe string budget, so to speak. See, until last night, it was the first time I had heard of it and when they showed clips and showed that it kept winning, I was like "what the heck is this?" Someone even joked (was it Ben Stiller?) that it was filmed on a cell phone. Actually, one of my clients just called to check up on me and we were talking about it and she said it was far better than Benjamin Button. So, I might just rent this one.

DH is a huge fan of foreign films anyway as he is a Russian linguist (on the side). Furthermore, he does a lot of business with India and he recently spent 10 days over there and even visited the Taj Mahal. He bought me some very beautiful handcrafted
'star-of-India' jewelry and pearls.

I'm the one who said it was sweet and uplifting. Yes, there are some sad parts, just like there were in Sea Biscuit, but it is in the end a feel good movie. I agree that it is a good movie, perhaps very good, but not great. I had no idea there were conspiracy theories floating around about its success. My comment about it being a recession era film was completely based on my own observations. I've also been noticing recession era ads and other things(i.e. the one for Target where they suggest getting some new throw pillows is the equivalent of remodeling your living room). After all there is no denying that we are in a bit of an economic downturn to say the least.
I do recommend seeing it in the theater if at all possible. Many of the scenes would not be as spectacular on a t.v. screen.

oh- thanks, I never realized that.
That was a tear jerker!!- but for some reason I thought he got stiffed on that one.

No biggie - just thought you might want to know as it seems like you're a fan. I like Sean Penn a lot, though I was rooting for Mickey Rourke last night.

I guess you saw that movie. Was it good? I haven't actually been to the movies in so long, I usually get to see them after they come on HBO or showtime. I usually only see the kids movies in the theater. :(

I've seen Slumdog and thought it was a wonderful film, very uplifting (and sad in places) and with great performances and fantastic cinematography.

It deserved to win, all the more so because it was made with such a small budget (like most British films) and was originally going to go straight to DVD. The only part of the film that is subtitled is the section with the very small children who speak Hindi, which I would imagine they were more comfortable with.

I highly recommend it - but then I am from the UK, so probably biased!;)

Vee, you put it in a nut shell. Shoestring budget, feelgood, warmth and enjoyable viewing.

Foreign films can open eyes via a story line. UK film industry does not have the big bucks of Hollywood.

Slumdog Millionaire is an incredible movie, very deserving of an Oscar.

My husband is from India, so I've had the pleasure of visiting there. As India is a country of so many languages, English acts frequently as a common language. Most people I've met while in India speak English, and almost all who are under 35 do, and fairly fluently at that. I enjoyed seeing the fashions that I have come to know and love on stage at the Academy Awards. If you ever want to feel truly beautiful, wrap yourself in a Sari (or actually, have someone else wrap you and add lots of safety pins).

I am surprised at how many people in Catheland have a connection of some kind to India. :)

If anyone is visiting please PM me. I live in Chennai in the South and would love to show any Catheite around in my little part of the world.

LOL Laura! Us fans of John Waters will never be able to win over the others. And Titanic was SUCH a cheesefest to me. Though it did have some good actors in it.

Amy

It's such a relief to find I'm not the only one who just didn't get anything from Titanic.

I don't know why it bothers me so much, but I am no longer a fan of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The whole love triangle thing annoys me. I have lost any desire to see any of their movies.

The more I hear about these two, the more I don't like them. I heard yesterday on the Ryan Seacrest show, that Brad and Angelina parked in front of a Jack-in-the-box (I guess it's a fast food place in CA) and waited for everyone to walk the red carpet so that they could be the last one's to walk it and get all the attention. PLEASE.

And you believed this bit of randomness that you heard on the Ryan Seacrest show?

Yes. Supposedly, the person that reported this heard it from a good source. Just because it's the Ryan Seacrest show, doesn't necessarily mean it's NOT true.

Slumdog Millionaire was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. When I see a movie, it's usually out of my mind the same night. With, Slumdog Millionaire, I was telling everyone I ran into that it's a must see. Someone asked me if it was annoying to see a movie with subtitles. I guess there were a few lines but not even enough to make an impression. It's a great movie and I think deserved the recognition it received.

I thought this was a great movie. My DH LOVED it. He never likes any movie I like so it was surprising that he liked it so much. I think it deserved all it got. I saw Benjamin Button also but thought Slumdog was better. I really really liked it. Might go see it again on discount day, ha!

Haven't seen Slumdog, but DH is on it with the Amazon thing, he has all the Oscar movies ready to ship when they become available...

OMG, who cannot watch Titanic and not shed a tear or two? I bawl like a little ole' baby everytime I watch the old couple holding onto each other laying on the bed as the ship is sinking, I mean, I thought it was so beautiful..I hate it when you are not "cool" unless you speak French and "understand" a certain movie and well...sorry, not into the intellectual snobbery AT ALL.;)

Angie and Brad acted stupidly aloof at the Oscars, its your job people, your fans want to see you talk...so well, talk...they "shushed" reporters away...:rolleyes:I adore them, but please, you aren't divine...just actors that look better than most...

Noted:):):):):)

Have not read the thread, but here's my opinion!

Well I did not see ANY of the contenders...........but personally, I am glad Pitt did not win best actor, and his movie didn't win either..........can't stand him after the Aniston/Jolie mess!
