Critter in my house!! Mortifying! (LONG)

Ick, so you actually saw it??? I would be freaking out too! If you do get the big boy traps, just be careful the doggies stay away from them. I'll keep my fingers crossed that Ben* doesn't have any friends!!!

*Obscure reference to old rat movie I'm sure none of you have heard of. ;)

DH loves the movie Ben

The rat doesn't sound fun, but a French-speaking boyfriend does!!

Could be worse - I one time had a Chernobyl roach in my house. The cats were chasing it (I thought it was a mouse because it was so big I could hear it run across the wood floor!). I turned on the light and freaked out - as did the cats. They jumped back and we're like - WTF!! One cat just left and decided he wanted nothing more to do with that - the other one just sat and stared at it - from a distance. I had to keep it cornered for a couple of hours (while in hysterics, of course) until my roommate came and killed it. I'll take rodents over roaches any day of the week!

Ummm....what's a Chernobyl roach (i'm actually a bit scared of what the answer will be):eek:

Rats are so gross! Their tails alone give me the whillies.

We had a problem with raccoon invaders coming into the house through the cat door! (this was way back when we had indoor/outdoor cats.)

One night I went to check on my ds (then a baby) because I had heard "sounds" on the baby monitor. I round the corner into the kitchen and there were two HUGE raccoons in the middle of the kitchen, one was on the island!:eek::eek::eek: I swear to god, one looked at his wrist watch and gave me a look like 'whaddya doin' up lady'. Here's the thing, they did not move an inch. Not one inch. They just sat there looking at me as if I was interfering with their party.

So what did I do - I grabbed my big broom and then I told them to get the hell out of my house, they turned around and left. No kidding. (worked with the snake too.)

The next night we put the cats in the garage and placed a live trap right under the cat door. Entered and captured. We only had to catch one raccoon. The other one never made another attempt.

Good luck with the rat extermination! Yuck - I bet you want to scour everything down now!

AAAGGGHHHH!!!! Racoons!! That would so freak me out!!
I have the whacking trap set fro Rhoda - see what I have in the am.
Only going to set it at night & it is safe away from doggies!!

Will post results tomorrow. ;)

oh tami, i know exactly how you feel, RATS ARE DISGUSTING. and yes, they are very smart, and horribly nasty creatures. we had an infestation one year, and they were everywhere. i don't know why , just that one time, and we have lived here for 26 yrs. i kid you not. we probably killed 20-30 rats that spring & summer. in the house, out of the house. it was sooooo gross. thank the LORD, my son lived at home then, cuz my husband is gone alot. he is a truck driver. one day, my son set a trap and caught 3 in a matter of 30 min. i feel for ya. cuz , they are bad enough outside, but in the house it is awful. and, we have always had cats. we live in the country and have barn cats. they did not help that year. the only way i know, is either poison, which is not good inside, cuz then you have to find it. yuck! or a trap. traps are what we used. my dad had one crawl inside the wall and die one time, so ya have to be careful w/poison, cuz you never know where they are gonna die. man, sorry, hope you catch the varmit!

LOL! that is hysterical janis, yep, coons are a real pain, too. especially, when you have chickens , they loooove chicken meat. and eggs too. but, i've got 2 noisy hound dogs running around now, and have no problem w/coons anymore. but, how did they get in your house???? those are more varmits that are extremely smart. and really mean!

oh, oh, another rat story. :) many years ago when i was pregnant w/my son, we live way out in the country and one nite when i got home from work, these 2 rats started runnin' around the house. i just about died, and of course, my husband (the truck driver) was out of town. well, i was grossed out, so every nite after that before i went into the house, my big dog went in and chased those dern things back into there hole, wherever that we. we did not live there for much longer. there were also very big roaches!!!!!!!!!!!ICK!!!!!!!!!!!

Sat AM I have yet to conquer "Rhoda" but I am amazed at all of the rat & various critter stories. Makes me feel less dirty now for having a rat in my house!
Saturday round 2!! Bring it on Rhoda.....

I find it hilarious that you have named this rat. Don't feel like your house is less than clean for finding a rat in your house. Several years ago, they were building a new subdivision near our house. We're guessing that all the construction drove the field mice into our neighborhood and we ended up with a whole family of them. And I keep my house pretty clean. Good luck with Rhoda.

I guess I'm alone in actually liking rats and mice. They don't bother me at all; I think they're cute and I find it hilarious to watch the cheeky buggers running along the pipes of the ceilings of restaurants. I don't have them in my home (I have seen a couple at an old apartment, but they were taken care of by my cats), but how could you hate them? Mice are so cute and rats are so smart - real survivors under any circumstances.

Are you joking? Please say you are. They are a health hazzard.

I would not want to find rat droppings anywhere near my food.:eek::eek:
Can I over use the eek symbol?!!! OMG!:eek::eek::eek:

Tami,
I would call a professional. They multiply fast and can cause a lot of damage to your home and health. I wouldn't risk an infestation:eek::eek::eek:

If I saw a rat or mouse in a resturant, that would be one less resturant that would get my $$$. Some things you just don't want to see.

Well, alright, but realize that almost all restaurants have pests such as cockroaches (much worse an issue, in my opinion) and almost all have mice and/or rats. Just because you're not seeing them, doesn't mean they aren't there. They are little and good hiders! One more reason to admire them, no? The ability to not only survive but thrive within a population of human beings that constantly seek to destroy them is amazing!

A Chernobyl roach is a ginormous, huge, monster roach. (it's my own term). This sucker was so big you could have put a saddle on it and your little mouse could have ridden it. It was about 3-4 inches in length and about two inches across. HUGE. Freakishly large, even for NY. Yuck!!!
