Cathe why no pushups in Meso 2 & 3?

Hi, I am enjoying STS thoroughly. Thank You for such a great program. I love everything about it. Big, Big, Big Applause!!!
I was wondering, beside Disc 22 in Meso 2 , why are there no pushups in the rest of the program?
I am concerned by the time I do Meso 1 again I will have to start all over again doing them on my knees. TIA...Peggy

No push-ups? Hip, hip, hooray!

I just did about a million push-ups this morning (Disc 7, Mesocycle 1). And I did half a million last week.

No push-ups? No complaints here! :D

No complaints here either!
They are my least favorite exercise. Although I love what they do for my chest muscle where it meets my arms. I guess I really like them, but they are so darn HARD to do!!!

Uh, yeah, I'm looking forward to not doing them for a while!

I doubt you would lose all of your strength and have to revert to modified push-ups. You could always add some if you want!

I just finished Meso 1 and agree about the million pushups:eek:

Just a guess on my part but I think pushups are more endurance based whereas Meso 2 & 3 are more about strength. However, with P90X, I did pushups throughout the whole 3 month program...so we're back to square one:rolleyes:

I'm right there with you Kathryn! I did Disc 7 last night and about died trying to do the pushups...well bottom line - I can't (but I try!).

So, no complaints from me either! (Although I do think I'm doing more even if they are on my knees!) :D

no pushups..really? I hate pushups too, but I think they are the one exercise for everyone (unless you have some medical issues where you can't really do them) to really shape your upperbody!

On the other hand...I think P90X included so many because there is no direct chest work with chest flies and presses.

I was wondering if there would be pushups later on in 2&3. And even though I can not do all of them I think I am going to miss how they challenge me. I want to better at them and that makes me try harder.:D

I worked really hard at all those push-ups and I hope if we stop doing them, I don't lose my results. That would be ashame but at the same time, I hate them and won't miss them.

I myself am going to miss doing push ups. I think they are a great upper body exercise. I have noticed quite a bit of improved arm definition after doing them.

When I get to meso 2, I am going to warm up with pushups instead of the 50% bench press. I want to keep increasing how many I can do on my toes throughout the year, so I don't want to give them up.

Just a thought for those who may feel inclined to miss them;)

(although it looks like there are a huge number of pushups in the disk 7 workout, I think, like over 180 or something:eek::eek::eek:--I'm doing the 6 month, so I'm not there yet, but oh my.....)

Maggie:)

I do push ups all the time. I love the push up segments in meso one but now that I am in my second week of meso two, I won't miss them!!

OMG! I am still in Meso One and it is pushup hell!

YEAH!!! I have 4 workouts left in Meso 1 and am doing the happy dance that I will be free from pushups for awhile! even when I do them on my knees, they are not very friendly on the kneecaps, so I do them against the wall, and probably do not feel them where I should be... I'm not complaining either that they are Gone, Baby Gone!

Hi Peggy! While push ups are super hard and an excellent exercise for the chest (and other muscles too), they are an exercise that only uses your own body weight. True you can do certain variations to make them feel harder but eventually you will aclimate and the only way to keep them increasingly challenging is to do more reps since you can't increase your body weight. For this reason they are better placed in the Muscle Endurance phase. So unless you put on a weighted vest when doing them, again, you will be limited to maximizing strength gains for chest with push ups because you are never increasing your weights. Meso 2 and 3 are designed to increase lean muscle mass and strength. So for these phases it is necessary and most effective to do your weighted chest work exercises here (ie: bench press, flys) so that you can increase your weight week to week.

Btw, if anyone has a weighted vest, feel free to put it on for those push ups in Disc 22 , tee hee, it may get ugly but its worth a try!

Great idea Maggie but I must strongly suggest that you do them before you do the two warm up sets at 50% rather than in place of. Those two warm ups sets set the tone and movement pattern for that heavy weight that follows. When lifting heavy weights like that you want to warm the muscle up with the specific movement it will be expected to perform with heavy weight. The shoulder joint really needs to get warmed up in this range of motion PLUS you want to feel that good pre-stretch in the chest to get the blood flow in the muscles and help prevent pulling/injuring anything. Just want to keep the workout safe and effective for all :)

Thank you for the explanation. It makes sense ..however...I'll pass on the weighted vest idea for now. I have plenty of body weight as it is..Peggy

Yea, I will pass too. I struggle with my body weight. I will try to sneak in some push up here and there. I really want to continue to improve.
