Cathe on supplements

Hi, I am 5' 1" and 120 lbs. I exercise and try to eat a clean diet.
My exercise routine includes cardio and weight training (Cathe's videos, of course). What are your thoughts on taking a supplement like Hydroxicut? My goal is to lose 5 to 10 more pounds.

Obviously I'm not Cathe, but thought I'd chime in on this one. I tried Hydroxicut a couple of years ago. All it did for me was give me the jitters (and my heart rate felt accelerated). I stopped immediately and thew them away.

Me too Lorrayne in regards to taking Hydroxycut although I persevered for a period of 3 months...not to mention the large hole in my wallet!

My issue with the fat burning supplements on the market is that they always say "combine with a sensible diet and exercise regime". If one suddenly starts a healthy lifestyle AND taking the supplements together, it is impossible to know how much credit the pills can take for any resulting changes!

The only supplement I take now is Glucosamine to protect my joints (I have knee pain) although it is early days yet so time will tell if this works for me (research shows that it works for some but not others).

Hi kirstyscooby,

I personally feel it's best to eat as clean as possible and eat as clean as possible.

I've read lots of good material on Glucosamine. Are you taking this alone or are you taking SAMe?

Thanks,
Lorrayne

Hi Lorrayne, yes there is no substitute for the clean eating + exercise combo and the simple math formula of calories in vs calories out!

I am taking glucosamine alone (well I take a general multi aswell). What is SAMe?

Cheers

I have also tried a couple different " supplements". All they did was give the jitters and had me feeling anxious. I ate clean, but the pills didn't help. After I changed up my routine, increased the intensity a bit, the weight came off without the pills! Susan

Good morning,

I would HIGHLY recommend that you stay away from Hydroxycut or any other "fat burner" type pills. If all of those really worked, the entire nation would be slim. What they do is take advantage of people's desire to get fit fast.

A couple of things to note. I personally was doing BFL years back and took one of their recommended supplements (for the life of me I cannot remember the name) ~ and a day or so into it I had major insomnia and MAJOR heart racing/palpitations. It was SCARY!! Once I stopped, a day or so later (the pills were time release) I could sleep and the heart racing stopped.

if you recall, they pulled the other popular drug Ephedra off the shelf because athletes were DYING while taking it, having heart related issues in their 20's etc. Now its back from what I hear and I cannot believe people want to endanger their life taking it just to POSSIBLY accelerate weight loss. Keep in mind, there is also NO GUARANTEE that taking the pills will get you the results you see in the ads.

***On THAT note, when Hydroxycut first came out in the fitness magazines, they would always (and still do) post the 2 page ads showing some AMAZING 12-WEEK transformation that "couldn't have happened without the pills". In one magazine they also did an article on the one woman that was featured in the ad; during the 12 weeks for that ad, she ate 800 calories a day and worked out 2x a day for over an hour. HELLO!!! ANYONE eating 800 calories a day would lose that kind of weight!!

Additionally, I just this week saw a post on another message board from a gentleman whose colleague was paid by Hydroxycut to pose as a success story, he received a garage full of the pills for his endorsement but he NEVER USED IT.

Take the time to read these boards online, there is a wealth of highly valuable information FREE online to help you reach your goals. I guarantee that you don't need to buy pills to get you to your goal.

I hope this is helpful to you as you consider this.

Kind Regards,
Kelly

I think it was also Hydroxycut that featured a pregnant or post-partum Marla Duncan as a " before" model.

As Kelly says, these supplements are always advertised with the disclaimer that results were obtained through use of the pills " in addition to a sensible diet and exercise program." Even if the pills helped a bit, how does taking them teach you to eat right and exercise the amount necessary to maintain your ideal weight? And if you do lose those 5-10 pounds using Hydroxycut, who's to say they won't come back on when you stop taking it?

The last 5-10 pounds are often the hardest to get off, IMO.

I finally broke my plateau by adding more raw foods (the enzymes of which help digestion), replacing some other types of protein powders with hemp protein powder (also raw, and very assimilable), and adding WHOLE FOOD supplements (not drugs) like maca root powder and blue-green algae and mangosteen (adaptogens, which work to strengthen the body in general).

Hi Chedieboo! I don't advise taking any supplements that have artificial stimulants in them to promote weight loss. Their serious risks (potential death) do not outweight their "proposed" benefits (assisting the body in losing 5 to 10 pounds).

Eat clean and varied healthy foods, keep focused and committed to your goals on EACH workout, and listen to your body along the way.

Drink water, sleep well, and make sure the calories going in do not exceed the calories going out.

You'll do great!

SAMe

SAMe is used to help improve a person's mood. I use it to calm down when I'm PMSing. It helps me not be too hyper or sensitive.

Glucosamine is typically included in the SAMe tablets.
