Cathe made my husband's jaw drop!

This has been making me smile all weekend...

My husband has trouble gaining weight. He knows that he needs to eat more, eat more often and WORK OUT in order to gain weight and muscle, and not just gain a pot belly.

So Saturday night, he's moaning about how he wants to work out BUT doesn't have time to go swimming (his only exercise to date), plus swimming won't build the upper body muscle that he wants. I said, "well, I have some upper body weights tapes you could try, I have all the equipment here at home, I'll preview them with you after dinner. If you'd like, I'll help you get started."

I pulled out Pure Strength Chest/Shoulders/Triceps and said, "we could start with this - Cathe Friedrich is a great instructor and gives lots of form pointers. It's advanced, but you don't have to do all the reps and sets she does. This tape hits the main muscles with multiple exercises, and it's not impossibly long. You'll get a good gym-style workout here at home."

Well, he was STUNNED at the workout - after Cathe and crew did two sets of pushups on an incline, he said, "wow, I don't think I could do that." Then when they moved to the bench for chest presses, he said, "wait, there's MORE? I thought that was it for the chest!" He sat there awestruck as Cathe blasted through multiple exercises, multiple sets. He kept saying, "she just keeps GOING...when does she stop? Can YOU do this tape all the way through?" [Me: "yes, babe."]

Bottom line: he's promised me he'll give the PS series a try this week, with me acting as personal trainer/motivator and helping on his form. AND he's gained new appreciation for "home workouts" - I don't know what he thought I was doing when he saw me schlepping my 40# barbell and heavy dumbbells into the living room, but obviously he never understood how challenging weights workouts can be in your own home!

Whoo hoo! That's great Allison! I hope your hubby does start the Cathe tapes!

My dh actually did Cathe's kickboxing tape with me once (cardio kicks I think is the name) and he could not keep up. Unfortunately though, he still doesn't think a whole lot of my videos. He mentions how I ought to join a gym so we can move my exercise equipment out of the spare room and use it for something else! :p I keep telling him I'd never get the workout I get at home with Cathe in a gym!

Hubby and I are going this weekend to buy him weights to do Cathe. He has NO IDEA what he is getting into :) And I'm not afraid to admit I'm looking forward to torturing him and giving him a taste of a "real workout"!

Way to go, Allison! I've been trying to convince my husband to try my Cathe DVD's. He's always been a gym kind of person and I don't think he's going to give that up. He's been my workout buddy since grad school and after we had our son many years later, things changed dramatically for us. I'd like to have him as my workout buddy again, but he needs much more than 40 lbs. of plates for his workouts. And now that I have Cathe, there's no way I'm going back to a sweaty gym!

I can relate with your hubby though. I also have a hard time gaining weight. Good luck to both of you.

Heh, heh ... makes them kind of respect you more, doesn't it? The first time my DH saw me doing a Cathe tape (he's watched me do all the Firm ones before), he just stood there with a pained look on his face. When I asked him what was wrong, he said, "I don't think I could keep up with her, and you look like you're having fun!" I just smiled and said, "I am!" And proceeded to pick up my loaded barbell!! LOL!!

Just make sure your husband doesn't hurt himself! My husband is one of those lucky people who is thin and athletic without even trying. He doesn't exercise ever, and certainly doesn't ever lift weights. After years of trying to get him to exercise for his health (since he doesn't need it for appearance) he decided to give Cathe a try. He started with PLB, and being a somewhat smug male, decided to match or go higher than her weights...long story short, he literally could not walk for three days and he hasn't done a workout since. Now I feel terrible because I know he needs to exercise and I can't convince him to try again. He calls Cathe a "robot" (among other names which I won't list here - come on, we all have sworn at her one time or another!)
Anyways, I would definitely suggest easing your husband into his workouts so he doesn't hurt himself and give up just when he's getting started.

Good advice, Tracy - he's liable to give up if he's too sore. I was planning to start him on one set of each of the exercises and have him go light/moderate on the weights, plus really help him stretch at the end. He'll still be sore, but I'm hoping it'll be that good kind of sore - the "I really worked out, my muscles are tired" instead of "OMG, I can't lift my arms."

The Husband is so dang COMPETITIVE, though - he'll likely try to overdo it because how could a group of women outdo HIM on strength exercises? My task will be to tell him, "Dear heart, they're fitness professionals - it's their job to do this." Ah, the great battle...male ego vs. common sense...which will prevail?:p

My dh loves doing Cathe's strength tapes. He runs marathons and likes to use Cathe to cross train with his running.

It's great to hear about couples doing Cathe together.

Last Wednesday, my boyfriend came over just as I was finishing up PUB triceps. To my surprise, it was easy to convince him to do the bicep portion with me.

You could tell he felt awkward when he started and he didn't know how seriously to take the workout but soon, he was getting right into it.

When we finished, he complimented me on how much I lifted (Wahoo!!! I thought he would think my weights were wussy!!!) and said that he thought Cathe did an awesome workout.

For the next FOUR days we were both incredibly sore. It was fun having somebody with whom I could compare and share my aches and pains.

Fortunately, his experience did not scare him off from Cathe workouts. He has promised to do more Cathe weights in the future with me. I can't wait!!!
